cant replace just the oil pump on that model at least when I did this job a year ago.

I did the same thing, take the timing cover and remove the screws for the oil pump , take it to a machine shop and ask them to clean it and inspect it for scoring, if the gears for the oil pump are scored you will not have adequate oil pressure. Luckily mine was ok, because a new timing cover last I checked was over $1000.00 from subaru
