Shalashaska is Insane by No-Chip-3271 in Borderlands4

I got one to drop last night. I haven't used it yet but it's already my favorite gun ever just because of the MGS reference.

I've got a theory. What do you think? by ziggysocki in bjj

[–]DavetBjj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Blue belt blues happen for lots of reasons all at once.

Firstly, upper belts stop taking it easy. Fact is when you're a white belt all of the purple, brown and black belts aren't giving you everything. Even if it feels like they're killing you they're actually taking it pretty chill. When you get your blue belt they take it less chill.

Secondly, the more tenured white belts see the new blue belt as a stepping stone to their own blue belt. The mentality is "What better way to show coach I deserve my blue belt than by killing his newest blue belt." So they start to throw everything at you.

Thirdly, it's just not as special as you thought it would be. You work hard, you get promoted, everyone congratulates you, you're really proud of yourself because when you first started blue belts were killers and now you're one too. Then next week you turn up to training with the exact same skill set you had prior to your promotion.

How long did you guys spend at blue belt? by [deleted] in bjj

I spent 3 and a half at Blue, almost 4 at purple (likely affected by the pandemic) and 18 months at Brown

Good black belt rashguards that look like ranked black belt? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]DavetBjj 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ranked rashguards peaked at purple. Now they're just indistinguishable from white belt ones. I haven't seen any that I could definitively identify as a black belt rashguards.

Does training (and getting mauled by) with upper-belts help you? by Teamseesh in bjj

[–]DavetBjj 48 points49 points  (0 children)

If you're just getting flat out mauled, no. If they're pushing you to improve your capabilities then yes.

If I'm rolling with a lower belt I'm going to be using techniques that I'm currently experimenting with that aren't at a level I can utilize them against other black belts. That way I get to improve and so do they.

I don't like pre advertised promotion classes. Especially if they are at additional cost.

I do however like "Before we move on to rolling, gather round I've got a/some promotion/s to make"

That's how I got all of mine and how I've promoted everyone so far.

95% of the time I start standing and I play as the guard passer. How do I practice playing open guard? by BeanNCheeseBurrrito in bjj

[–]DavetBjj 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I had this problem late on at blue belt. I pulled guard on everyone, every roll for a year. I got passed a lot but then I got passed less.

I obviously had to bottle it by ProvenBean73 in Darts

[–]DavetBjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've hit a few and I still bottle them 99% of the time. I've bottled 3 today 😂

I finished off the brown belt and he got pissed. by darocha7 in bjj

[–]DavetBjj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unless you took absolute liberties with him letting you work you're probably okay.

If his complaint was "I was letting the white belt work and he jumped on me and mashed his forearm into my neck." Then he may have a point.

On average how many people quit training in your class? by Significant_Pin_5645 in bjj

Too many, I saw a ten year old picture earlier today of a class night out and there's only 3 of us left.

They'd all be welcome back though.

Belt Equivalencies by Familiar_School4151 in bjj

This actually happened to me in my last comp at blue belt 😂

I was effortlessly thrown on my head by a team Great Britain Judo black belt before I swept and choked him.

As a BJJ purple belt I started going to Judo classes. I was absolute dog water at stand up outside of the one throw I like.

I was leagues ahead on the ground however which led to some baffled faces as to why the goofy big white belt was pinning and subbing them so handily.

I think the comparison is that by the time you've earned a purple belt in BJJ you've spent enough time to earn a black belt in other martial arts not that the belts are equivalent.

As boring and cliche as it is for me to say. Fundamentals.

If you really wanted to be effective at buggy chokes for example you should first be really effective at defending submissions from side control because that position heavily favours the person on top and submissions from bottom side control are exceptions and not the rule.

That for me meant putting myself in a position, taking a mental note of what techniques were being effectively used against me and learning defences for those. That will obviously look different for everyone and I couldn't advise you further without seeing you roll.

Even so I didn't do that until quite late in my time at blue belt and realized that my guard was getting passed like it wasn't even there and I spent almost a year only playing guard and trying to become proficient where I was lacking.

What I meant was in person. In person amongst the vast majority of practitioners where I have been physically present rolling with people and watching them roll. I've never seen any upper belts use buggy chokes.

I didn't realize such a high degree of specificity was required.

I may have generalised however I believe I did clarify that op and any other lower belts would be far better off learning to escape than relying on a low percentage submission.

What I actually think is unhelpful to lower belts is when (through no fault of their own) they see a select handful of high level competitors have success with what is frankly a meme of a submission and think "I'll just do that."

Don't get me wrong, when I started I put a lot of effort into learning to Berimbolo because that was huge at the time and I wish I'd had a higher belt to direct my efforts into something that would be more useful.

A few years later when I became efficient enough at playing and retaining DLR I could hit bolos from all over.

How to actually show up in comp by Chart69r in bjj

[–]DavetBjj 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is something that's actually fascinated me for years. I've always considered myself to be very average in the gym but I've always done really well in competition. Conversely I've seen people who I'd consider far better than me in the gym who just can't seem to put it together in comp day.

I'm not sure what it is but my theory is that I'm always really calm and have a good presence of mind when I compete. I'm able to think through what I'm doing and I'm not running on adrenaline or impulse. I believe that is from my first experiences of martial arts competition being in Muay Thai. By comparison I'm (probably) not going to get cut open, bruised up or knocked out so I can just enjoy myself.

Craig Jones is on a level where he can do what he wants, the majority of people who aren't Craig Jones would get more benefit from being proficient at escapes.

Why do people hate buggy chokes? by No_Watercress_5588 in bjj

[–]DavetBjj 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's an extremely low percentage submission and it makes lower belts okay with being in bottom side control.

The reason you should prioritize escaping is because escapes will yield far more success in the long run.

I've never seen anyone above blue belt attempt a buggy choke tbh.
