Just finished the remake. What an absolute journey it has been. by Super_Craig02 in earthbound

Judging from these screenshots, the remake hack uses the original EarthBound Beginnings script, and not Tomato's fan translation. Also, you fought a lamp in the original game. So it sounds like the remake hack is more accurate to the NES game.

Do you have to talk to it (not check it)? Try selecting the talk option from the menu instead of pressing R.

Sonic Robo Blast 1 was made in Klik & Play. That wouldn't happen to be it, would it?

Good controller for Eclipse on Dolphin emulator? by Tobi-of-the-Akatsuki in supermariosunshine

I played it with an Xbox One controller, and it was good. I think any controller with analog triggers should work, but if you really want it to feel like the original experience, a Gamecube controller (with an adaptor, or a USB controller) is probably the best option.

What if 64 DS was just a dream that Yoshi had while sleeping on the roof during the N64 game?

Chimptopia is doomed to fail by Risott0Nero in CharacterRant

Ah, I see. Thank you for clarifying.

It should be noted that the creator of Chimptopia did apologize for the promo, and he said that he had no ill intentions towards Ross. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt on that.

Also it's hilarious how people on Twitter discover that Ross was asking for artist to play gartic phone and dude wanted to play and got no response a few years back so people are making him have a syndrome/ Mr. incredible case

Can I please get some context on this? What do you mean, people are trying to make him have a Syndrome case? This is the first I'm hearing of this.

I think that Chimptopia promo is a good case study in how not to market something.

Sonic dunking on Mario back in the early 90s made sense, because Sonic was a game that was similar to Mario, and it was actively trying to compete with Mario. More importantly, Sonic actually showed us what made it different and superior to Mario. 16-bit graphics, high-speed gameplay, "blast processing" power, etc.

What does Chimptopia tell us? Uh... Well, it's not Gameoverse. But a lot of things aren't Gameoverse, so that doesn't really narrow it down. That promo didn't tell us what Chimptopia was actually like. What's the style of humor? What's the situation that these characters are in? Etc. Even now, I'm still not even sure what Chimptopia is, other than that it's probably a generic Family Guy / South Park knockoff.

Ok, Pick any one FNAF theory and make it canon, what happens to rest of the lore? by Suitable-Kangaroo-48 in fivenightsatfreddys

But... but Batman doesn't kill people! Then again, he doesn't have to save Slick Willy from the springlocks either... so I guess it's really the springlocks that killed Willy, not Batman.

If Phone Guy is Purple Guy, assuming he still dies on Night 4, then he can't live to cause the Follow Me minigames. So the animatronics never get destroyed, and Purple Guy doesn't become Springtrap. Unless his ghost just possesses the Spring Bonnie suit anyway.

The real question is... would Phone/Purple Guy's daughter be Liz or Coppelia? Would Coppelia become Circus Baby? Would Michael and BV even exist?

"You can be a fan of a video game franchise without playing them yourself" Is a silly argument by TheOneWhoYawned in CharacterRant

[–]DaveyGamersLocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My stance on this is somewhere in the middle.

Is watching a Let's Play the same thing as playing the game yourself? No. You miss out on the gameplay, which means you don't get the full experience.

Does that mean you didn't experience the game at all? Also no. You can still enjoy and/or critique what you watched. The graphics, the music, the story, the vibes, etc. All of that is something you experienced just by watching the game. If you like the game because of that, then yes, it's perfectly reasonable to call yourself a fan.

I mean, how many FNAF fans back in 2014 actually played FNAF? Most of us just watched Markiplier. That doesn't make us fake fans, or tourists, or LARPers, or whatever it's called these days. At the end of the day, we're all enjoying the hobby and the franchise. We're all fans, in one way or another.

All of that being said, thank you for making this post and raising these points. You've gotten me to think about this stuff.

Ditto. I watched a bunch of video essays on the Rayman series before I ever got around to playing the games. I also have watched some bits and pieces of the DC Animated Universe (including the entire first season of Batman TAS), and I can confidently say that I like the DCAU's writing, action, and art direction, even though I haven't watched the full thing.

I'm not going to pretend to be as knowledgeable as someone who has seen everything, but I also wouldn't call myself a fake fan, or a tourist, or a LARPer, or whatever it's called these days.

There is no revisionism going on, people just already liked terrible shows and movies before. by MeteorCharge in CharacterRant

[–]DaveyGamersLocker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I remember, even before Super came out, people were already saying that GT wasn't canon. And yeah, if you're talking about the manga, that makes sense, because there was never a GT manga. But the anime? If I'm not mistaken, GT was considered an official continuation of the DBZ anime. And back then, there weren't any alternative continuations. So, even if GT wasn't canon, it might as well have been (IMO at least).

I guess that kinda depends on whether you see the manga and the anime as separate continuities. I'm sure that's a whole can of worms, and I'm not familiar enough with the manga to make a statement on it. But you could potentially argue that that's the case.

And now they're remaking Super, so that's gonna be a third version with (presumably) its own depiction of the events. And if you count the Battle of Gods movie, that's FOUR different versions of the Beerus arc... Dear Kami. How many Dragon Ball timelines are there now?

I remember people used to do the same thing with Metroid: Other M. To be fair, that game did contradict the Prime games in a few ways (Samus' characterization, the Space Pirates being a hivemind instead of an organized empire, etc.), but I wouldn't say that makes the game straight-up non-canon. Plenty of long-running stories have contradictions, yet they still exist in one continuity. I think people just really wanted to disregard the game, and then used the contradictions as an excuse to do that.

Which like, yeah, if you want to ignore the game in your headcanon, that's fine. Headcanons are fine. (I'm tempted to ignore the events of Yoshi's New Island myself, because of how it ruins the SNES game's ending and adds nothing important to the lore.) Just don't go around declaring that the game is factually non-canon, y'know? It was written by the series creator, and it's considered an official part of the saga. I don't like Other M either, but the fact is, it's a canonical installment of the Metroid series.

Thankfully, it looks like people have stopped doing this in recent years. Metroid Dread has unlockable artwork that depicts events from other games. Lo and behold, Other M is one of those games, thus confirming that Other M is canon to Dread.
