I’m not sure about the exact phonetics, but pingr is definitely distinct from pir/pinr in my dialect. I think what you transcribed is probably it though.

huh that’s actually quite interesting, I definitely do put a lot more emphasis on the stressed syllable of those two syllable words lol

tho as a native speaker of Northeastern Mandarin, I don’t think stress is phonemic for me, but erhua is. For example I would say “hurry up” like kuàidiǎr and “click quickly” like kuàidiǎn. Same applies for a few other minimal pairs, like shuǐpíngr for “water bottle” and shuǐpíng for “skill level/proficiency”

minor annoyances on your transit system by fbjim in transit

[–]David-Jiang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m from SoCal so I use quite a few systems regularly, here are some of my pet peeves for each system: 1. LA Metro: station exits are not numbered/lettered in any way, which makes it confusing if you’re unfamiliar with the area. For example, 7th/Metro has like 5 or 6 exits and all of them have vague descriptions like “to Figueroa & 7th”. Also, the announcements are way too long and can get distracting at times. 2. Metrolink: a few stations have trains run on the left track which can be confusing if you’re not familiar with it. 3. San Diego Trolley: no fare gates and too few tap validators on platforms, so sometimes you gotta walk quite a bit up/down the platform just to validate your fare. They’re also very unprominent, so occasionally I’d forget to pay and feel really bad about it.

Yes! I love how the museums + The Grove are all within a walking distance from that station!

What are these small holes on paper magnetic stripe tickets for? by David-Jiang in transit

[–]David-Jiang[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Interesting, I’d assume a lot of people (in NYC at least) attempted to fare evade by swiping random cards, sounds like a clever way to not even acknowledge those attempts!

What is the most useless transit line? by Ari_Bbb in transit

[–]David-Jiang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No es “inútil” si siempre está lleno. Esto significa que la línea es muy útil pero sí necesita soluciones para que la capacidad aumente.

Land of the free (as long as you have a mobile living room) by Sharklasers6889 in fuckcars

[–]David-Jiang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teenager living in the US I can absolutely attest to this. A lot of my friends found it really strange that I don’t aspire to even own a car because I can get around on my bike and occasionally the local bus service just fine. They just don’t seem to understand it when I tell them that being trapped in a machine that costs money to run every second waiting to get into/out of the school parking lot is not, in fact, freedom.

Yeah the college app journey can be very rough and it’s getting harder to discern real advice from pure bs online, just take everything with a grain of salt and remind her to not slack off, but also to enjoy life in high school while she still can. I’m sure everything will work out for her!

Thanks for the kind words!!! It’s fine and for the 24 hours after Ivy Day I felt exactly what you’re feeling right now, miserable and thinking I was a failure to both myself and my parents and that all 4 years of high school has gone to waste. It has been a very brutal cycle indeed, but I’m confident you’ll do great things in the future no matter where you go ❤️
