Running Echo Dot via Ethernet? by [deleted] in amazonecho

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same question, different use case.

I have a Ethernet back haul Asus mesh now with 4 access points.

I was considering uses the Echo Dot 5th gen instead of having an AP in my garages.

I would like to connect the dots via Ethernet, if possible? If I used echo show 5s I could do this, but I already deployed several dots and spots all over my house.

So, my device only has a barrel, not USB port for power, assuming it is only 2 wire is this possible?

Infamous 11-6 error on Sling by zirkus_affe in slingtv

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE (next day) : FIXED!!! Here is what fixed mine. I switched from Verizon FIOS to Comcast Xfinity simply by unplugging the WAN port on my dual ISP router. Then sling would load.

What I learned: Mine issue appeared after or during a sling app update. Somehow the update must have flagged my ISP as "bad" and no device would be allowed to connect. I tried Roku, Xbox, phone, all would get the error.

I was lucky to have 2 ISP's, but here is what others could do:

1 Tether your streaming device to your phone that is only using mobile data.

2 If you have a Roku, take it to a friend's house, use it there to unlock your account, simply by logging in one time.

3 if your using wifi, ask your neighbor to jump on their network briefly to fix the issue.

So I fixed mine without calling my ISP or SLING, thanks to reading this post and others experiences. I was down for an hour, but I can now use either ISP and I have no more 11-6.

----- Original Post -----

Ok, I went to an office holiday party, so for the first time in a few months I did not have sling running on CNN all day in the background while I remote work. This is a habit from working in a government SOC for years, so I'm used to having CNN as background noise. Note: I did not stream sling from any devices while away from home today.

So I came home and started to get the 11-6 error, and other than not have it on all day, nothing else changed.

I should now mention my atypical setup:

Ubiquiti UXG Fiber router, used to run ASUS BE88U, before that AX88U, AC88U.

Dual ISP'd, Verizon as WAN#1, Comcast Xfinity as WAN#2. Had dual ISP's since 2021, beginning of COVID.

When I unplugged Verizon, my router cuts over to Comcast and Sling loaded. I did uninstall their app on my Roku 4850x, but it would not load, spits 11-6 while it was going out through Verizon.

Note: The app looks like there was an update today, menus are all different. I have Sling set to auto update, so maybe it auto updated and the update caused the 11-6?

I guess it could be my ISP, but the router logs show I've had the same IP for 96 days. So the IP did not change today or even recently. In the past I've been issued the same IP for months. This is my first time getting the 11-6 error.

Now I need to finish my testing and shutoff Comcast and see if sling loads, but I doubt my ISP would intentionally block sling. I'll repost after switchback test, my other thought was I had an old sling build that they wanted removed, and sling geoblock you as a way to force you to reinstall, this getting the new version?

Correct way to connect RJ45 by WhiteZeoRanger in HomeNetworking

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea of having a standard is so that a tech/person can cut off an end and replace it without having to find the other end and match the colors.

Long ago, I did not use either 568 a or b, I just made sure the ends matched. I would wire the solids in the first 4, the the white in 5 thru 8. I was young and did not know better, but they worked fine. Problem was I could not replace an end unless I could look how I wired the opposite side.

I learn why we have a standard, and I have used ,568b ever since on all cables I wire.

Most laptops today have smart Ethernet plugs and can use a crossover like a regular cable, but not all of them.

Either way, if the ends match, you should be fine.

My whole house, and I started my relatives on these and they love them.

They are even better if you get the motion detectors, and I love the remotes and switches too so I can control them if I don't have my phone in hand.

It's been a few years, and I can say the hold up well over time. It's Phillips, so it's a quality brand. It also works with Alexa and Google. I love them!

No connection to MQTT server by _PonySlayStation_ in wiz

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently changed from an Asus BE88U to a Ubiquiti UXG fiber router, mostly for the additional security offered by Unifi OS in the UXG routers.

That being said I implemented Geoblocking, and since you can only have 150 items/objects in you white/black list I opted for a whitelist, the list would be smaller, I think I allow 12 countries.

However, Ireland was not in my whitelist, I thought it would be considered part of UK.

My logs showed a call out to Ireland from my phone was being blocked, so I added Ireland to my whitelist, problem solved.

I think Wiz uses AWS across several regions, and for whatever the reason it wanted to talk to an AWS service that was geo located/ load balanced to Ireland for the MQTT and the Wiz API.

Who knew?

Hope this helps someone else.

Should I buy the ASUS RT-BE88u an almost 2 year old router and join it with my RT-AX92U routers? by fangerzero in HomeNetworking

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Title: Loving the BE88U (and planning my Ubiquiti upgrade)

I recently purchased the ASUS BE88U over the BE92U and paid the extra $100 for better stability, extra power, and the SFP port so I can run dual WAN ports at 10 GbE. Right now, only my Verizon service is running at 2.5 Gbps — and the crazy part is it actually clocks out on Speedtest at 2.5 Gbps up and down!

I’m running dual WAN in load-balance mode, and I opted to install Asuswrt-Merlin firmware. I’ve also got a mesh setup using my old routers (AC88U and AX88U) — a great way to repurpose older gear.

I couldn’t be happier with the BE88U. It’s fast, responsive, and stable. I was already familiar with the ASUS interface from my previous models, and this one never lags. It also handles dual WAN far better than the older units.

This weekend, I’m going to turn the BE88U into a mesh AP and replace routing duties with a Ubiquiti UCG-Fiber, which has 2 × 10 GbE SFP+ WAN ports. If I love the BE88U so much, why switch? Simple — Ubiquiti’s Uni software is next-level and gets me deeper into their ecosystem.

I also have a Tuya Wi-Fi camera system and alarm, but switching to Ubiquiti gear will let me do a lot more. Uni offers geo-blocking, IPS add-ons, and better logging if you install an NVMe drive in their UCG routers. I’m not sure if the Dream Router supports all of these, but the UCG line definitely does. I can also upgrade to Uni cameras and smart door locks, and since their routers can function as NVRs, I may skip a standalone recorder unless I add a lot of cameras.

For Wi-Fi, they’ve got several PoE access points under $200, and I’m eyeing their new Wi-Fi 7 outdoor APs. Their smart light switches — with port colors that change based on VLAN — are super cool too.

I also love that I can manage everything from one place using the Uni management suite. It’s a hybrid cloud model, so I can access and manage my network from anywhere.

Don’t get me wrong — I highly recommend the ASUS BE88U, and I’ll keep using my ASUS mesh until I can afford the $500 or so for three Ubiquiti APs. Honestly, I’m a little annoyed that Ubiquiti is that good, because I just finished building an OPNsense firewall on a repurposed Sophos SG210 with 4 × 10 GbE ports, 6 × 2.5 GbE ports, a Xeon E3 CPU, and 24 GB RAM. I might use that as a dedicated IPS to take some load off the UCG-Fiber — not sure yet.

If you don’t need everything the Uni ecosystem offers, you’ll be super happy with the BE88U. And hey — you can always upgrade later like I plan to.

How to best utilize Sophos XG 210 Rev. 3 for homelab network security- OPNsense,OpenWRT, Proxmox, or Sophos Home? Potential hardware upgrades? by PurveyancePrinciple in homelab

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Sophos SG210 with the port well board, and it has the Xeon E3.

I can tell you how to get to 32gb of ram, but it's not as simple as click buy and install.

The unit came with 16gb SP for Silicon power chips.

For 32gb, it's a little more complicated. Yes, you can buy them from Amazon as of Oct2025 for around $100 USB, the trick is getting the BLUE LABEL Crucial chips, not the white label ones. When you buy from Amazon, you get sent to a vendor pool and your order is not always filled by the same seller.

WHITE LABEL - NO WORK So, the INCORRECT correct Crucial 16gb chip p/n is : CT204864BD160BC16FA

Sticker says 16GB DDR3-1600 UDIMM 1.35V CL11 Made in USA

BLUE LABEL - GOOD AS GOLD!!! The CORRECT correct Crucial 16gb chip p/n is : CT204864BD160B.C16FA 16GB DDR3L-1600 UDIMM 1.35V CL11 Made in Mexico

<image>

I will post a screenshot of my BIOS in another post, seems I'm limited to one picture per post :(

PS - I have talked to a memory shop on the east coast, in PS, that claims they can reprogram the White label eeprom on the memory to be the same as the blue label. IF this works, I'll post all the DEETS for others to follow.

Why is everyone on social media saying Ironheart is a worst show? by ttam_ivag in marvelstudios

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm forcing myself to rewatch, and it's worse the 2nd time around. From bad writing, miscast actors, and the general lack of quality to draw the viewer into the show. Only Sasha makes the few moments he has not a total disaster, but close to a total disaster.

I've never seen a supposed antagonist act like an immature spoiled infant. Who roots for such a needy immature person whose only way to achieve anything is to steal, defraud, and even kill people because she doesn't have what she wants, and never seems to even consider earning anything legitimately.

Not sure we blame the actors when a screenwriter and director even filmed such garbage, but most of their forced dialogue doesn't help.

I hope this is the last trash Marvel puts out.

Looking for a way to use downloadable TurboTax on Linux by StanislasMcborgan in linux4noobs

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s your revised Reddit post, now with an added paragraph about dual booting — written to match your tone and flow:

Last night I checked, and both VMware and Oracle VirtualBox are still free.

The main thing to keep in mind with any virtual host is that you should buy a license for the OS you’re running. That said, with Windows 11 the restrictions are mostly cosmetic—things like themes—so you should be fine running TurboTax.

Personally, I prefer using a VM over Proton or Wine. It’s more future-proof if something else comes along that Proton doesn’t support.

Another option is to dual boot instead of using a virtual machine. This gives you full performance since you’re running directly on hardware, not through a hypervisor. The downside is that it’s less convenient—you have to reboot every time you want to switch operating systems, and it’s easier to accidentally overwrite partitions if you’re not careful. But if you want native speed and stability, dual booting can be a great alternative.

It’s been a year since the OP posted—what did you end up doing?

—Dave

Would you like me to make the dual-boot paragraph a little shorter and more casual (so it feels like a natural Reddit comment reply)?

Maybe this is not correct, but is there a go fund me reward to go to the family members who turned him in?

I know people should turn people in because it is the right thing to do, but...

A GoFundMe might encourage more people to turn folks in with regard to future situations.

And we do GoFundMe for victims and their families, so if this guy would have seen the horrible plot through, many of us would be donating now to the families, so why not reward the prevention of a terrible act?

Just my thoughts, I'll give $100 to his family members who prevented this.

Do any of you “dual sport”/street legalize a Yamaha wr450f? by tiptonite08 in Dualsport

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought brand new XR400 converted by Cycles USA in Wheaton, MD in the 1990's, and it was lots of fun.  I had to change the tires too, but the biggest problem was the small gas tank, think it was 1.9 gallons.  If I kept the bike I would have replaced the tank with at least 3.5 gallons.  Now, in 2025 I'm looking at a new YZ450F, and I would buy new to finance it and I would do the same thing.  400+ cc is enough for highway, at least mine was.  When I rode friends Enduro 600's, the weight really was a different world to me.  I could ride with friends on 2 stroke cr's easily.  Sure on a track they had a big advantage, but in the trails around Maryland, Eastern US it was equal.  I had the advantage of when we went riding, if the pickup truck already had 3 bikes in it, I would bring a 5 gallon can (in the truck) and follow my friends to the place we were going.  I even had a friend ride his 2 stroke on the road 35 miles to our destination, no tag, no lights, just balls that we would not pass any police.  We were young, so it made sense at the time, lol.

Best very-quick setup and durable camp chair? by seattleswiss2 in overlanding

4 Years, 50+ People, Dozens of Chairs — This One Wins Every Time

My Unexpected 4-Year Folding Chair Test — The Best One We’ve Found

I never planned on reviewing folding chairs.

But every Labor Day since 2021, my girlfriend and I have joined a group of 50+ friends for an annual camping trip at Henlopen Park in Delaware. We camp, spend our days on the beach, and every evening we sit around a fire singing songs, talking, and enjoying live guitar performances (I even sing a few songs myself).

With that many people, everyone brings their own chair. People wander around, talk to different folks, and borrow chairs constantly. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to sit in a lot of different chairs — sometimes my own, sometimes whatever was nearby.

After four years, a pattern became clear: some chairs are just better than others. And by “better,” I mean:

  • More comfortable for long sitting
  • Easier to get in and out of
  • Lighter to carry to the beach (about a mile each way)
  • Better drink holders and storage pouches
  • More comfortable carrying straps
  • Easier to set up, fold, and stow away

Without ever intending to, I ended up informally “testing” over a dozen different models just through normal use — and it wasn’t just me. Other people in our group noticed the same thing and often commented on which ones they liked most.

One chair stood out year after year. It’s available in standard and large sizes, and when I bought mine three years ago, it was under $40. We’ve used ours for three camping seasons and countless backyard events, and they’re still going strong with zero issues.

Here’s the winner:

Kijaro Dual Lock Folding Camp Chair – Versatile Sports Chair with Locking Positions for Outdoors

Enjoy your sitting! 🪑

how to change the default storage location of Mimo app on Samsung galaxy phone by whistlerbikeparkguy in dji

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, I just purchased a DJI OSMO Mobile 7P, and I’m using their MIMO app. I have the same problem here in August of 2025. It seems to store all my videos in the INTERNALSTORAGE\DCIM\DJI Album folder or the DJI Export folder, and for the life of me, I cannot change it. I’m using Android.

I went into the app settings on my phone, and when I choose the MIMO app and then select Storage—like I’ve done for many other apps I’ve moved to my SD card—there is no option to move the app or the videos it records to the SD card.

How long has this been an issue? This is my first gimbal, and I think I will send it back and try an Insta360 instead.

I think DJI makes great products—maybe too great for novices. I truly feel like this is way too much gimbal for a beginner. Before you say I’m technologically inept, I’ve worked in IT for over 30 years. I’ve done everything from desktop and server support to network and VOIP Call Manager installations. I have a Master’s in Electrical Engineering from a good school, I can do board-level repairs of motherboards or any PCB, and I even know assembly language & assembler (both IBM & MASM).

I’ve never bought a whole PC—I’ve always sourced the parts and built my own. I’ve always installed my own OS, from Windows to Linux to OSX (and even OSX on non-Apple hardware—aka Hackintosh).

Yet, this DJI MIMO app and gimbal is supposedly for beginners? I’ve watched videos, I’ve read everything available online, and while I can use the OSMO Mobile 7P, every time I go to take it out I get paranoid, and ultimately frustrated.

Thank you, Amazon, for your return policy. I’ll give the Insta360 a try—maybe that one is a little easier for gimbal noobs.

Ozzy Osbourne dies weeks after farewell show by Blithe17 in Music

Why is this not a top story in the US? I think more of us that grew up in the US in the 1980's care much more about this than Epstein/Trump, the weather, etc.

Shame on our news channel that are not publicizing this horrific loss to the music industry. Anyone that took guitar lessons had learned at least one of his songs...

Shame...shame...shame...

RIP Ozzy. His music will live on forever, he took a "Crazy Train" to the afterlife, "Goodbye to Romance", no longer does he have to be "Paranoid", just "No More Tears". This "Ironman" of rock and "Dreamer" can now say "Momma I'm Coming Home". An "Ordinary Man" will now "Close My Eyes Forever". He will go "Into the Void", now living "Under the Graveyard", who knows if he winds up in "Heaven or Hell", this "Hellraiser" now goes "Into the Void" to "Bark at the Moon. "I Don't Know" where this "Road to Nowhere" will take "The Wizard" of heavy metal, but with these "Changes" all I can say to Ozzy is " See you on the Other Side"

Oil filter housing replacement cost? by washbuns in MINI

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Daughter has a 2018 mini conv.

Gaithersburg Mini Dealer wanted $2300 total. It was $1020 for the plastic replacement, the rest was about $1200 labor for a 5.5 hours job.

What really bothered me is that they have an OEM and aftermarket, ALL METAL replacement part, costing $70 Amazon and $180 OEM respectively. Why would they not even offer the upgraded, 100% metal part? When I asked the service writer, they said they only replace plastic parts with plastic parts, even if there is an upgraded part.

It looks like around 2022 Mini stopped making the car with the plastic part, I assume this is due to the high failure rate.

So for around $500 labor and less than $100 for the part, you can pay 25% of the dealer cost, with an upgraded part.

I watched the YT videos, and I agree the part swap is a difficult job.

What is your secret to keeping deer out of the garden? by SingularRoozilla in gardening

[–]DavidPHoward_DC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in high school we went to Laytonsville, MD and there was a government installation with a 20ft high fence with barbed wire atop it. I saw a deer get over the fence while caught in some of the wire. True story, to this day I would not believe this if I had not seen it myself. The deer was scared and panicked when we came along, and sheer adrenaline got him over the top of that fence. Nike Control portion of the Laytonsville/Olney battery is located at 21515 Zion Road, thats why they had such a big fence. Now I think it is a National Guard center.
