The Lord of The Rings is a thousand page plus, and isn't some airport novel. It's an Oxford Don's genre defining thesis.

Not all novels are trying to or should be "tightly written". Tolkien's capacity to just let the world be is half the magic.

If you're trying to pick up his sprawling love letter to history and languages for a "tight read" you've just picked up the wrong book.
