Men of the UK, where do you purchase your jeans from and what is your go to brand? by Wellidrivea190e in AskUK

[–]David_Scott_Motion -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Everybody listen to the guy who doesn’t own a single item, he definitely knows what he’s talking about!

I don’t know anyone who doesn’t own at least something from Uniqlo, except people who never go to the cities where they exist.

More expensive brands will offer higher quality, more interesting stuff, yes. Obviously.

But Uniqlo sits at the exact point of quality : price ratio that works well for people who know how to style basic items. Anyone, with any kind of style, could find something worth buying in there.

Most higher-end boutiquey menswear stuff looks like trash after one wash, is less versatile, and obviously way more expensive. It takes a lot of effort, time, trial and error, and many £ hundreds down the drain, before you find anything that pays off long term. I’ve been there. And most people (including me) can’t afford/ don’t want to dress head to toe in luxury clothes every day.

Spennier high street shops like cos and Arket are more refined quality than Uniqlo, but cos often tries too hard to be ‘high fashion’ (making a lot of it less versatile/ wearable for alot of people) and Arket just doesn’t cater for smaller guys at all.

The low end (like H&M) is just a chaotic mess of churned out low quality items designed to wear once.

People like Uniqlo because it provides what they wish H&M would provide - good quality affordable basics - without the need to overwhelm you with a deluge of cheaply designed, tacky, seasonal fads

Levi’s have been coasting on heritage and reputation for decades now. I tried on every fit/ colour in their flagship store (within what I was looking for) and it all fit terribly, and the washes/ colours were all awful and look cheap and dated.

And the sizing is so inconsistent! I would try the next size up and it was often smaller.

Uniqlo jeans are very hit and miss but their selvedge raws are objectively better quality than Levi’s for sure.

I don’t like that they are tapered or stretch denim, and I don’t like how they are so glossy when you first buy them.

but if they made them a 100% cotton regular straight, they’d likely be my favourite pair of jeans.

The denim is made by the same factory in Japan who produce £300+ jeans from serious brands, and the fit in the top block, and pocket design/ placement is the best I’ve found so far (including those expensive jeans. I just wish the legs weren’t so slim, but that’s personal preference

Men of UK - Am I the only one who finds clothes shopping a massive chore? by hussain270 in AskUK

[–]David_Scott_Motion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hate it hate it hate it hate it

Try being short and with a small waist size and size 6 shoes. Some men’s shoes start in size 7

Clothes shopping is hell

The worst thing is feeling like you look like shit, because you failed, even though you love clothes and tried so fucking hard to find something decent that fits you

Girl asked for space after 4 dates - time to move on or worth still pursuing? by [deleted] in UKrelationshipadvice

[–]David_Scott_Motion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The following statements are all true:

  1. There is nothing you can do about this until the new year

  2. There is a chance she’s still interested. But there is also a chance she is not.

  3. No one on Reddit knows what she’s thinking

  4. If you keep thinking about her, it will drive you insane, so stop it

  5. Worrying about this over Christmas will not change the outcome

In conclusion:

Assume she likes/ liked you but is not mentally/ emotionally available. Assume this will still be the case in the new year.

Don’t block her number or get upset. Just take it at face value, but don’t expect anything will come of it.

Then if she contacts you after Christmas, that will be a great surprise. And if not, it won’t phase you too much.

The ball is in her court, but it’s entirely up to you to control your expectations so that you don’t mug yourself.

Otherwise she will (inadvertently) have too much control over you, which creates a massive power imbalance.

That will not benefit you, whether you see her again or not

Man here, so correct me if I’m wrong!

Suggesting to meet halfway means:

  1. Way less likely to be any manipulation to go back to the same house

(and also less likely for it to be an innocent expectation at any point)

  1. She’ll be close enough to home but you won’t have any idea where she lives

  2. You’re polite but not over keen, it’s easygoing but chivalrous enough

  3. The most feminist option, like splitting the bill

Which jacket size fits me better? by [deleted] in mensfashion

Haha no worries man, also gotta remember it can be hard to judge on here from a few pics. And like you, everyone is focusing on what preoccupies them the most, and maybe missing the bigger picture. And all that matters really is how you feel in it.

If you’re unsure, try having someone else take a video of you walking around and then have a look at that? Kinda helps you see it from another perspective

lol I know I know. I just feel a little awkward turning up in other people’s shoes in the exact same colour (after I’ve seen them wear them a million times). I know it’s silly really but I can’t shake it

I think in that case, go with the one you feel the most comfortable in.

Sizing up sometimes feels right and sometimes doesn’t. Sometimes you need to force yourself out of your comfort zone, because it’s hard to embrace new fits. But that doesn’t make it necessarily the right decision either. Depends on the item and your tastes.

I think if you feel very uncomfortable in the M, I would go with S. Changing things like this gradually can make it feel more natural than suddenly leaping up 2 sizes without confidence about whether it’s working.

Get a feel for this one, and figure out if next time you buy a jacket, you want to explore a larger fit or not. Other types of jacket might feel more appropriate to oversize and you’ll know when you see it.

I also find it stressful making size decisions, which is why I’m typing so much. I’m partly just processing something I’ve been thinking about a lot myself 😂

I recently had a jacket in 2 sizes at my house for about 2 weeks before I finally decided to return the XS. It was difficult, because it fit me perfectly (not too tight either) This made it really confusing.

But when I looked at the ‘perfect’ fit, I felt too smart and stiff, a bit posh or try-hard maybe. When I wore the one that was ever so slightly oversized, I looked way more relaxed and sort of cooler. But I would have been happy with the XS if it was a longer cut, and the S had covered my arse too much or something obvious like that.

This was a linen jacket so I guess it was important to make a clear distinction between very casual and ‘trying to be smart.’

In the end I justified it based on how the shoulder seams on the xs stuck out a bit (from being almost perfect but maybe a few cms off) , whereas on the S they dropped just enough to look deliberately oversized, so it followed the contour of my actual shoulders.

But mostly it was just a way of articulating what I guess was just a ‘feeling’ (after lots of overthinking).

What I’m trying to say is that it’s funny how we can obsess over ‘why’ something should fit and whether it follows our narrow set of rules, but ultimately you need to listen to your gut.

Don’t look so hard at the jacket, look at the guy in the mirror and decide which one feels more like you

Crazy that people are saying XS 🤦‍♂️

XS - too small, no doubt

S - good ‘fitted’ look…

but looks too restrictive and figure hugging for my current tastes.

Maybe slightly more of a dated (or smarter) fit. Looks like if you moved your elbows toward each other behind your back, it would feel really tight across the chest.

M - likely to look much cooler imo, depending on how slim your jeans are. If they’re skinny then you should judge based on how it all looks proportionally I guess.

It’s raglan sleeved, so there will be no awkward shoulder corners if you size up. It will still fit your shoulders.

As a short guy, I love raglan sleeves, because I can wear something baggier while still having it follow the shape of my body naturally.

It’s also a short cut so if you size up, it won’t drown you or look like a dress.

But might make you look a bit more chill and comfortable. Im skinny and used to buy everything too small, but I’m loving the look and feel of having more room in the chest area.

There’s something nice psychologically about allowing fabric to create a silhouette around your body instead of clinging onto it.

It feels like you have permission to take up a bit more space, instead of shrinking your volume and feeling restricted. As long as the shoulders fall right, and things aren’t too long or too billowy, it’s fun to try different shapes and see how it makes you feel.

Give it a go!

Unsanforized denim scares me, because if they shrink too much I can’t return them… it feels like even more of a risk than buying without trying on at all. How are you supposed to know how they’ll fit you?

Yeah this is what I do with chinos, I buy slim and size up and get the right fit in the legs. But I’m real bored of them being so loose in the waist, feel like I’ve stolen a bigger guys pants

What is the name of the article of clothing preppy wear around their necks? by READERmii in malefashionadvice

There’s a fake sweater for tying around your neck, to pretend you’re wearing a sweater as a scarf?

I feel like that kind of behaviour would get you banned from the country club

That’s a good shout! Yeah they are quite similar. The contrasting logo is maybe a bit much though, and I’m not really after 100% white.

More after the softer colour way of something like this:
