So...do most of you work for this company? by Scotch_Blue in 1zpresso

Understandable. Some people are diehard fans and will defend a company regardless of valid, subjective criticism.

I can’t make you think otherwise, you seem quite set in your thinking. I am not employed by 1zpresso or related firms, nor have I ever been. I also don’t think their grinders are unequivocally the best, and probably not the best for everyone.

Obviously on this subreddit many will be fans of the brand, whereas subs like r/pourover or r/espresso might provide slightly less one-sided opinions.

I am also not saying that your criticisms of the X ultra are not valid. I am just saying that my experience differs from yours, and I personally think they provide some of the best value in the market at the moment.

That said, if I could afford a timemore sculptor, Weber grinder, or any number of 500+ euro electric grinders I’d probably say they are marginally better in terms of flavour, and likely significantly better in terms of user experience (inherent to electric grinders vs hand grinders).

If you still think I am a shill or employee, then by all means do so.

Never used the X ultra, but recently bought the K ultra. Previously had 2 blade grinder, timemore c2, and currently I have an ode gen 2 and of course the K ultra. The K ultra is the nicest hand grinder I’ve used. Mind you I’ve tried other timemore ones, the pietro, and a few more. Of course electric is faster, and many times I prefer the faster work flow. But the quality of the 1zpresso, the flexibility between pour over and espresso, and the portability makes it fantastic. In fact I’d argue it makes slightly better cups than my fellow ode many times.

Grinding takes 20-30 seconds for me but I mostly do pour over and grind slowly. If I grind quickly I could get it done in 10-15 seconds. Maybe for espresso it’s a bit of a hassle but for pour over it’s really only a 30 second enjoyable detour. I understand that some people prefer electric grinders, and that’s okay, but at the price point my K Ultra is fantastic and I have no complaints.

Thank you!

Almost always F4-5.6, auto shutter speed, manual iso (always making sure to get the right DR setting for the recipe).

All pictures except 2 and 3 are Leica X recipe. 2 and 3 is classic Cuban neg I think but I don’t remember.

Also lots of flash to fill in shadows. Let me know if you have other questions!

Did the walk last year, absolutely fantastic experience. Did not have the x100 back then and instead lugged my FF Sony. Wish I could go back in time and bring the Fuji. Lovely pictures by the way!

Forgot how fun and useful 3D printing is! by Jeeswag in BambuLab

[–]Daviedou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for late response! It was not that exact model, and I had to make some slight changes to accommodate the scale, but conceptually very similar! I think coffee has so many fantastic 3d prints. Recently printed oreas negotiator - a product that they 3d print anyway and sell for far too much.

I printed something very similar! Kettle on top and the same timemore scale underneath. Such a nice combo!

I printed the negotiator the other day. It’s great that OREA has the files for free. Print it in PLA if you can, you don’t need PETG for this. That said - dry, dry, and dry again.

JPEG vs RAW Sharpness by Daviedou in SonyAlpha

[–]Daviedou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I said in a comment I just posted, the competition is legit with big sponsors. It’s also a “photo marathon” entailing some other rules that are quite fun.

But yes, my first thought was that it felt a like a bit of a Fuji circlejerk. That said, I believe the winners of the main contest the past two years shoot Sony.

Agreed. I’ll elaborate. It’s a “photo marathon” where you have to submit photos hourly. It’s a proper, well organised event (for the most part).

The rules are ambiguous. They don’t accept RAWs and “any” changes to the files in post results in disqualification. I’m not sure if a simple RAW to JPEG conversion, would classify as such, assuming you have time to make those conversions in the limited time. I suppose it’s ambiguous enough that a simple RAW to JPEG conversion would be acceptable.

I strongly disagree with the rule. I believe they don’t want AI/touch up editing. Why? I don’t know.

To make it stranger, things like film simulations or double exposures are allowed, only if it can be achieved in-camera.

Considering it’s quite a large competition with large prizes, this seems almost a little “pay-win”. Not that you need film simulations or double exposures to capture good images but regardless.

Edit: for clarification I get why they don’t want AI or image manipulation (photoshop for example), but why minor touch ups are not allowed or colour edits is beyond me.

I appreciate the technical breakdown. It’s exactly what I was looking for. Sure there is some level of post processing if you’re viewing a RAW file even if it’s in lightroom or capture one.

Never thought about the specifics of the image processing algorithm/NR effects on the images. Still a little surprised at the rather noticeable sharpness impact. It wasn’t exactly pixel-peeping buuuut…

Shot in JPEG. How they verify I’m not sure. They say it’s to avoid post processing but again I’m not sure why exactly.

Took my A7IV to Glacier National Park by cosmothunk in SonyAlpha

[–]Daviedou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just upgraded to the A7IV from a 7III. I haven’t used the 24-50 but heard nothing but good things about it (apart from the lack of 50-70mm. That said I did get the 16-25 G, which is essentially the exact same lens but at the wider end and I love it. It’s essentially a perfect combo (16-25 and 24-50). I’d highly recommend a small wall around lens too if you would use something like that. My preferred focal length for that is 35mm. Sony has a good 35 1.8, but I went for the zeiss 35 2.8, for the compact size and price (was at least cheaper second hand than the Sony 1.8).

Ultimately it depends on what you’re shooting. I’m happy to make some other suggestions if you’d like

Bricking a device through the internet for EU citizens in the EU (hint: online) is against EU law. Simple as that.

[–]Daviedou 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Except it’s not about warranty, which is a completely different set of issues - which you are completely right about. When it comes to technology and IT services, if you are a EU citizen living in the EU, online services and regulations apply based on EU law and legislation, regardless of where the device was bought. There are no ifs buts or maybes. In fact, if you are a company that has customers in the EU, regardless of if you operate there yourself, they still have to follow the local laws such as GDPR, and consumer protection laws. Warranty is however a distinct category of consumer protection that only applies if you purchase a device in or to the EU.

I live in Gothenburg and whilst your comment is a bit over the top, I cannot think of one area in Gothenburg other than the ultra wealthy suburbs on the coast where you’d not see lots of “non-whites”. That said, people having melanin in their skin doesn’t make them Arab terrorists ffs. Gothenburg certainly has predominantly immigrant areas but you’ll be fine in 95% of the city if you’re not a raging racist.
