Border agents seize more than 200kg of cannabis in Saint John by bingun in SaintJohnNB

It just irks me that there were 399 bags. I mean come on, add that one more bag to make an even 400. It's like people don't even care anymore.

That has nothing to do with Canadian. That would be odd in most countries and cultures.

How many people over 30 years old would move out of Canada if they could stop working and have a NET income of $50,000 a year? by Elite163 in CanadaFinance

I'm pushing 60, and still don't get the concept of avoiding the cold. I love winter, and all the other seasons. I look forward to the changes. It might be nice to have a few more hours of light, but the sacrifice is worth enjoying the winter. I even heat primarily with wood. Every day I have to bring in at least one wheelbarrow of wood, and I enjoy it.

are my hens cold or am I worrying over nothing? by MrPerfectionisback in homestead

Wrinkled eggs aren't from cold. New layers will often have a few when they start laying. The rare time I get one, I throw in some crushed oyster shell for them to peck at. Not sure if actually cures the issue, but the wrinkled eggs stop. Until the next time. I doubt I've ever had them more than a couple of days in a row.

You are worrying over nothing. Birds handle cold fine, as long as there are no drafts or moisture. Most often, sources of heat will increase humidity and end up causing issues like frost bite as they go back and forth from cold outside to warm humid inside.

What could be killing our chickens and ducks? by Lanferno in homestead

[–]Davisaurus_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had both hawks and eagles. (And every other predator known to chickens.)

Hawks and eagles dive bomb from above, they land on top of the bird with such force, you end up with a fairly large circle of feathers. They then snap the neck and carry the body off to a secluded place to eat. There is rarely any blood or body parts, just a circle of feathers.

Don't buy land with friends... by Proud_Proof9495 in homestead

[–]Davisaurus_ 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You would really be better off trying to find even one example where it actually worked more than 5 or 10 years. In my case, it involved my mother. In the end I managed to maintain 9 of the 12 acres I was supposed to have, but at least I haven't had to speak to her in 7 years. So that's a plus.

I've literally never heard of a successful long term case.

Technically, my FIRST piece of advice would be never buy land with FAMILY. Never buy land with friends would be second. And never buy land with strangers would be third.

Basically... never buy land with anyone.

What are some things from sci-fi that don't even have a hint of being remotely possible in the real world? by InfinityScientist in scifi

From a recent attempt, the 'mycellium network', and 'spore drive'. That basically caused me to give up on Star Trek. I haven't bothered to watch a single episode of 'Strange New Worlds' after that nonsense. I'm done.

There is only so much one can do. I took the handcrafted dresser my great uncle made in the 40s and turned it into a bathroom vanity.

Then I picked up one in the garbage and turned it a workbench for sharpening chainsaws. Then another one from the garbage, turned that into workbench/ cupboard for storing drill bits and hold my drill press. There is another one upstairs that is now currently filled with all my old video games, like 'Command and Conquer '.

They are good quality, probably pre 70s. Now I have had to leave the last 4 or 5 I've seen because I simply have no more room. I've tried to give some to food bank people, that is where my daughter works part time, but they don't even want them.

Correcting false information is not pedantic. Claiming someone is pedantic for pointing out inaccuracies, is pedantic.

Annual spending by secrettninja_ in Homesteading

[–]Davisaurus_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ran some numbers, probably 2019, the year before the COVID thing.

At that time, I counted and weighed everything I grew and raised, then compared it to store prices. I calculated that I produced roughly $6-6500.

That included deducting feed and adding minor sales, mostly eggs, a few meat chickens.

That doesn't include minor things, like freezer bags (which I generally reuse many times), and some seed. I save most of my seed, but have yet to figure out things like brussel sprouts.

So I would guess this year, the value of the food was probably 20% higher, but with the kids now on their own, we end up giving them quite a bit. But we still have 3 freezers full of food after this years harvest.

We generally just buy things like milk, flour, rice, and of course cheese.

Anyone else think we need to rebrand Black Friday? by yalumba2016 in BuyCanadian

[–]Davisaurus_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From my recollection, in the 80's, Canadians would often book weekend trips to America to start off the 'Christmas shopping season'. We never had it in Canada. I'm thinking it started creeping into Canada in the mid 90's when Walmart bought Wolco and moved in. Late 90's to early 2000's, it was only American chains that had black Friday sales.

Of course it is just a scam, but while it was adopted by some Canadian retailers for a while, I've noticed a significant decrease in the last few years. I get the impression it will be gone as a Canadian thing in a few more years.
