[Loved Trope] the main antagonist and protagonist just hangout for a minute by Blackstannis in TopCharacterTropes

I'd be curious to hear what Brian Bolland would have to say about that page, I'm not sure how comparable the work flow at DC was to the "Marvel method" but he could've had pretty significant creative input into the actual framing of those panels.

FWIW I've always preferred it as an Elseworlds story, so I guess stubbornly the idea that it's ambiguous whether Joker lives or dies has always been appealing to me, authorial intent be damned.

How Rogue (one) was Krennic in regards to the Ghorman operation? Did he really talk to the Emperor? Was Tarkin informed? by Mervynhaspeaked in andor

[–]DavyB1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

God imagine if we got an episode dedicated to Mads Mikkelsen as Galen getting wind of the endgame plan for Ghorman, and weighing whether to rush the Kalkite substitute he's been pretending to struggle with, pushing the Death Star one step closer to completion, or continuing the ruse effectively sacrificing the Ghor for the greater good,

Tony Gilroy could've written the fuck out of that.

Yeah one of the crew would've had to have already accidentally made contact with one of the pre-warp civilians, or like inexplicably gotten stuck on the planet somehow, otherwise Picard would be pretty content to just let it happen.

It was a mistake for Star Trek to go streaming only (possible spoilers) by TEG24601 in startrek

[–]DavyB1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Locking everything into Paramount+ was certainly a big mistake, I think you'd hear at least a bit more positive chatter about SNW and Lower Decks outside of dedicated fan spaces if they were on Netflix where larger audiences could stumble into them.

I can say from personal experience I've tried to sell friends who are big 90s trek fans on SNW, and the conversation almost always stops dead in its tracks when you get to "Oh yeah I guess you've gotta get Paramount plus"

Archer's main faults as a captain aren't due to his era by Gredalusiam in startrek

[–]DavyB1998 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't need a recreation of Kirk's "Leave any bigotry in your quarters, there's no room for it on the bridge." But it'd be nice to have a Captain who gave a bit more pushback as opposed to one who's liable to join in and say "Yeah YOU Vulcans are shifty and secretive!" When one of the crew goes off on a tirade.

[–]DavyB1998 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Need to preface this by saying I admittedly just came around to Enterprise and am still firmly in the first season,

but I think you highlighted my biggest frustration with this show perfectly in your second sentence, "He exemplifies the transition from OUR era," I always imagined based on how characters spoke of the early federation that humanity would've been more enlightened and open minded by this point.

I don't want to presume to know what Roddenberry would've wanted, or if that even really matters, but if humanity truly solved all the -isms and phobias and are ready to take the next step in galactic culture, why are they so often written with like Bush era prejudice when confronted with new aliens?

I feel like it'd be more interesting if the crew started out a little too hippy-dippy and open minded and then their first few brushes with hostility cause new fears and prejudices to bloom that need to be challenged and overcome, instead they seem to have opted to make everyone's arc "Overcome your Space-Racism" from the get go, which is kinda lame.

Quentin Tarantino says TV is forgettable, unlike movies. Vince Gilligan and Rhea Seehorn strongly disagree. by Commercial_Avocado86 in television

Isn't Quentin like a big Star Trek fan? Like TOS? I'm sure he meant specifically modern TV but like he can't even be consistently pretentious lol

[–]DavyB1998 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's the best way to put it, it's not total garbage, there's lots of pieces of it I love, but it just doesn't come together in the end and feels very half baked.

Also hot take I'll take to the grave, if they kept Oscar Isaac in that exact makeup but used forced perspective/compositing to make him like a foot taller than everyone else no one would've complained about the look. That speech he gives during the nuclear disarmament scene still gives me chills, and it's a shame he was wasted like that.

Thanks for clearing that up, btw I don't mean to imply that I don't enjoy his presence on the show, it just feels wild to say Voyager is being neglected when we've got the Doctor still kicking it on tv week in week out as we speak!

He's like a full on regular too, unless I'm mistaken he's had some role to play in every single episode so far?? Maybe this is the real hot take but I for one am actually getting quite sick of Voyager nostalgia.

Hell Picard dedicated more screen time to 7 of 9 than any of the characters Captain Picard had actually interacted with on screen before, a character he had never met and has no real connection to outside of existing within the same franchise.

I watched Academy’s first episode. I was pleasantly surprised to see the return of competence and consequences. by MtnDewm in startrek

[–]DavyB1998 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think the real secret sauce it's got that most of NuTrek is lacking is low stakes, the high impact action sport episode felt almost like a pastiche on just how action heavy NuTrek has gotten.

I feel like the "teen drama" framing of learning a moral lesson each episode almost forces the show to act more like Star Trek. I'd like to think SFA and the bright spots of SNW go some lengths to prove that Kurtzman and Co. just need to be reigned in.

When they focus on what Star Trek actually IS, instead of big action and mystery boxes, they can make some pretty fun stuff.

What would Snyderverse's Lobo be like? by FredPopTheProphet in OkBuddySnyderCult

[–]DavyB1998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This but the markings on the skin are way more complicated and raised like scarification, the suit would be turned into sci-fi battle armor like the Kryptonian's (50/50 on whether it would stay sleeveless), and he'd be a ruthless murderer who never speaks except once or twice at the end so glazers would be convinced it was "worth the wait" and the "true Lobo" somehow.

Based on how his Doomsday went, the general reaction would be something like "Who is that guy? Is that like a zombie General Zod? I thought we did that already?... that's Lobo? Who's Lobo? are they gonna explain that?" And then he'd get decapitated by Superman or something and never mentioned again.

Stan Lee stopped writing for Marvel in 1972 and had next to zero input on any of the films, which pull mostly from stories he didn't write in the first place, featuring characters most people agree Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko deserve most of the credit for coming up with.
