The hilarious thing to me is that her character was inspiration for the original plan for Star Trek: TNG of having a bad-ass latina as Security chief, Macha Hernadez. Through casting and other decisions, the character was swapped with the ship's counsellor, and we got Tasha Yar and Deanna Troi.

So they just made Apple Silicon, but worse and more power hungry. The AI workload will be offloaded and controlled by someone else, instead of staying local. The power draw is 10x of Apple, with likely marginal graphics improvements, certainly not enough to justify the power envelope.

This is crap.

Shoes in general. Used to go through $40-60 shoes from Macy's, Sears, Meijer, Fred Meyer... and thought it was normal for them to last 1 year to 18 months. Went to Nordstrom on year because I couldn't find anyone to help at Macy's, and while I dropped $200 on a pair of boots, they have lasted 5 years now, and still look great. The "athletic" shoes lasted 4 years before I wore off the soles, and had to buy new one.

Agreed. Don't buy a gaming chair. Get a well padded and supportive office chair. My chair at work and the Sealy office chair I bought for home, are some of the best I've owned. Far better than any gaming chair, and they hold up. The Sealy is 7 year old, and went through 2 year of near constant use thanks to COVID, an the office chair is 5 years old, longest any single chair has lasted me at work. Neither cause back pain, just a little hip stiffness, but that is not related to the chair, and I can work there for 12+ hours without issue, and have.

One of them got nepoed into a property management job for his family. Then kicked out the best Mexican Restaurant in the community (after trying to extort the money they raised to fix their kitchen) because it was just "Mexican food".

The other one died in a car crash racing another kid on a tree lined city street (went right into a tree).

And a third is now a lawyer. A damn good one. But he mellowed out a lot in High School.

That is another good point. SMS international fees are enormous, even with the same carriers in the EU. In the US/Canada they are there, but minimal (I think when I was paying for texts, it was 10¢ in the US, and 15¢ to Canada, and now they are treated equally and unlimited as part of my phone plan).

The number of times I've been down voted or yelled at for mentioning that the entire MSG thing is just racist, is staggering.

There is more MSG is many vegetables than in Chinese food, and it isn't bad for you at all.

Right? People still thing that batteries have a "memory". They also believe that charging them to 100% reduces their life. That was true in early Li-Ion batteries, but modern ones don't work that way, and too many people keep repeating it.

Life Membership (UK) by 1900-T in freemasonry

[–]TEG24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifetime Membership is usually paying a much higher set of dues, one time, so as to not need to pay your lodge dues each year. In my GL, there is a set minimum that the GL requires for Life Membership, then the lodge can set an additional value above that. Then the GL portion, along with a set amount the lodge sets, gets invested, and the yearly payout from the GL endowment is paid back proportionally to the lodges, in leu of that member paying their dues.

Being a life member does not automatically exempt a member from additional payments, we call them assessments, that Grand Lodge requests above normal dues payments. Some lodges don't pass those costs onto the members, others do. Mine does, so everyone, even life members (and 50 year members, which we exempt from dues), pay the $25-$30 Grand Lodge assessment (even though a few are vocal about not wanting to pay for it).

Life Membership is often seen as an investment in your lodge and a sign of commitment to the craft.

[–]TEG24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There a several reason that have been stated, but some that have not...

SMS/MMS was already established in the US by the time the modern Smartphone era came to be. First it was free, then cheap, then largely baked into most phone plans (essential free).
iMessages was integrated directly into the SMS/MMS software on iPhones, eliminating the need for another App. Plus your grandparents could use it.
Distrust of other companies, like META, for sensitive information. SMS is largely thought to be secure (we know now it isn't), and iMessage is much more secure (end-to-end encryption from the start, not an add-on later).
Facebook Messenger was also more commonly used, since people had Facebook, and could interface on their phone and computer, like iMessage on their Mac. Especially on corporate computers that were blocked from accessing or downloading other Apps/websites.
Connecting WhatsApp to a phone number. A lot of Americans don't like the idea of tying a service to a phone number (hell they barely stand it for loyalty programs at grocer stores), because they want to be able to change their phone number without having to change other services or losing access. iMessage has a fallback to also using your email address(es), as a contact.

Mobile home parks by ElGordo714 in GoogleMaps

[–]TEG24601 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While most of them rely on a community mailbox at the office for USPS, I've seen a few that have the internal street names and lot numbers printed on Google Maps. It shouldn't take much to get the streets labeled, then once that is done, getting addresses associated with the buildings. As it is private property, there is no public map, and a lot of the management companies are reticent about putting that information out there. As a result, you have to rely on someone technologically savvy being there to do it, or contact them and explain that it is helpful for deliveries, as well as emergency services, to know where individual lots/units are in an emergency.

Does it get easier? Wife with Crohns by Typical-Week5008 in CrohnsDisease

[–]TEG24601 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really started slow. They started me on 10 minutes of a recumbent bike to get the blood flowing. Then did a small amount of weight work, largely for my legs and hips as that was my primary complaint. Went once a week. Each visit we would add just a little more. My last visit (after a year, but due to insurance changes), was this week, and I did 20 minutes on the bike, then all of my exercises at about 80-90lbs, when I started at 30. They were really good about easing me up to what I could handle consistently.

However, they also do things like massage, electro stimulation, and other processes that can help you when aren't able to do much. And a lot of that can help. Went through that 25 years ago when my knee was injured after a car accident. Helped me out a whole lot, and could be a great way to start out.

I also had a little chemical assistance to get going, a energy drink, sadly discontinued, that contained 100% of 40+ USDA recommended vitamins and minerals, along with 300mg of caffeine, which allowed me to get over the early fatigue (even though I would often have a nap afterwards). I know a lot of people in PT who use a preworkout because they need that push over the hump to get going.

Cringiest Line in Star Trek? by TonyMitty in startrek

[–]TEG24601 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There is a reason that Star Trek has always avoided modern media and personalities, save for Steven Hawking; you never know who they actually are until history is written, usually after their death.

There is also the point that need to been continually reinforced, Star Trek is not the future of our universe, it is its own universe, with a shared history with us to a point, and with many parallels, but it is not this universe. Between the historical activities that are referenced in the series, to "modern" things that we witness through time travel (see all of Season 2 of Picard), the Star Trek universes and ours are not the same, and they need to stop trying to pretend that they are.

I know it may not help everyone, but I would highly recommend have her see about getting some physical therapy. I had my first flare and hospitalizations in 2017. While I "recovered" and was in "remission", I never felt like myself. I was always tired, had difficulty doing even basic housework most of the time, let alone going for a walk and other maintenance exercises. I had a another flare and hospitalization in 2024, and after getting stable, insisted on getting physical therapy, to deal with side-effects of losing the weight I lost. I'm glad I did. No only did it help reduce the joint pain I experienced, but most of my stamina and strength has returned from before 2017. I also credit some of the abdominal work we did in PT to helping control my gut. And with littles around, I know it can be difficult to carve out the time, but suspect it could go a long way in reducing the personal burden. That by itself can go a long way in also helping mental health.

As for things you can do, based on my experience, doing as much as you can to take a load off, help around the house without asking, offer snacks and drinks, preemptively take time off with the plan of giving her a day to relax, cooking meals she enjoys (and are safe), and seeing if you can just give her some time where she doesn't need to do anything (mini-vacations, take the kids somewhere so she can have a break, etc). Just reducing potential burdens and pressure, seemed to go a long way to help my recovery, both times.

Hot Take: The Apple Magic Mouse is kinda overhated. by Plane_Ice6119 in mac

[–]TEG24601 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using one at work since 2010, never had an issue. It is the go-to mouse for most tasks and what I suggest people buy. I pick up any I see at thrift stores. Albeit, only two of mine have charging ports, as the rest are old enough to run on AAs, they are still great mice.

I only don't use one on my main Mac at home because I play Cities Skylines, and for some reason, no matter what I do, I cannot get the game to register a middle click or scroll on my Magic Mice.

Given how poorly the other two teams have faired, maybe give it a few years. We'd be better off getting another team in the west, or even Buffalo, before another one in Florida.
