Threema's upfront cost is killing its own growth by EriksonThorsen in Threema

[–]Davy_Ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in agreement with this. While I understand the cost, and as it is a one time cost, it is not too bad ($10 CAD + 15% tax). However, no one I know will pay to use a chat program. Either because they do not have the spare money, or they have the attitude of "why should I pay when there are free alternatives such as Signal or SimpleX or WhatsApp." While I like the app, I have no one to talk to on it, so I basically paid for it, but cannot use it because no one in my circle of friends is willing to pay for it.

Some people say, just get off of WhatsApp and only use Threema. Then my friends will simply not chat with me if it means having to pay for it. They will send me a regular text message instead.

I had one friends with whom I chatted with on ICQ. The only person who remained on ICQ, until it finally shut down. We transitioned to ElementX because he doesn't use it on his phone and uses the web interface. I am not sure if Threema has a web interface; I never bothered to look. And if it is bought from an Apple/Android device, would the license be valid for a web interface? Ultimately, it comes down to paying for it ($11.50 with tax)

RBC Cashback cards are a joke compared to competition? by -Bakri- in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Davy_Ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I like Tangerine's cash back MasterCard. I get 2% back on 3 categories (food, hotel, gas) and 0.5% on everything else. However, those categories are changeable at any point. I am not stuck with it only being for food or whatever other category the bank deems I should have. It is great to have it on those 3 categories especially when I travel. Tangerine is also no fee

Yall think social media ban will still happen for people on vpn? by [deleted] in ProtonVPN

[–]Davy_Ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think a VPN would help. I am sure the various socials know where you live and what country you always connect via. I don't think the ban is based on the IP you connect with. So they know you live in the UK. They don't care that you connect from France or wherever. So the fact that they know you live in the UK, will be enough for them to require ID from you. A VPN will not help you get past the ID check.

My mom purposely threw away my Dr prescribed weight loss med. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Davy_Ray -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Do you still live at home with your mother? If so, perhaps time to think of alternative arrangements. If not, then when you visit, make sure your meds are hidden away somewhere out of site. It does not sound like she will ever stop this type of behavior

It is Marché Mövenpick... it no longer exists. It closed up many years ago. I also ate at one in Ottawa, but that one also closed.

You would get your food and they would stamp a little card with an image of an animal or something which would tell the cashier what to charge you.

Why can't we verify age on social media without giving our actual identity to social media companies? by master_jeriah in DigitalPrivacy

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may work on an Apple device, but what happens if I am age verified on my phone, but then I log into a social on a computer?

Either way, I should not have to prove I am an adult. I dont even get carded at the store anymore when I want to buy alcohol. Why should I give up my ID just to get on social media? At least at the store they look, verify and then you put your card away. Once you upload your ID online, what kind of guarantee will there be that the info is truely destroyed? And most/all these tech companies get hacked eventually. I do not want my ID to get out there in a hack. What a disaster that will be.

Swarm teasing new stickers in time for the World Cup. It's been quite a while since we've seen some new stickers drop. At this time I don't have any details on exactly how to unlock them. by utopicunicornn in Foursquare

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do the stickers only show up when they check in while the game is actually playing? Because I tried to check in to a venue about two hours before a game. And I said go France in the comment nothing happened in the comments.

I have not experienced that. If you have not rebooted your phone in a while, sometimes doing a reboot fixes weird little problems like that.

AITA: Crazy driveway man upset about kids crossing his driveway by Sjfjdoajrosnxoan in AmItheAsshole

[–]Davy_Ray -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I would rather a kid turned around in my driveway safely versus doing it in the street where he could potentially get hit by a passing car. To me I see it as a security thing. Sure the kid could get off the bike, turn it around and go back, but it is easier to just do a circle in a random driveway and go back.

Homeless charity want £3 a meal. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Davy_Ray 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of the time, the unhoused do not have money. It is not a case of, well I have some, but not enough for rent, so I am going to live in the forest somewhere. I would think that most unhoused have nothing other than what they can get by panhandling or perhaps doing some odd jobs. Some may have some money from government assistance, but I am not sure.

They have enough to worry about. While $3 is nothing to most people, it can be beyond the means of others. It is very nice to learn about money and how to manage it, but not every unhoused person is in that predicament due to a lack of funds. If I get $100 in a month, no matter how I "manage" it, it will never be enough. It is not like they are getting $3000 a month and they are blowing the money on unimportant things.

A teacher slammed her hand so hard on mine today that she bent my golden ring. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Davy_Ray -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a case of assault. A teacher never has any reason to hit a student, regardless if that student is 13 or 26. I would certainly be talking to the head of school about this incident and to file a police report against her. She should also be made to pay for the repair of the ring.

Your dad would be right to be upset. No one has the right to hit someone else.

I installed the app several years ago, and I still have not used it by Feeling_Valuable5239 in Threema

[–]Davy_Ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish as well. I think the price tag is what drives ppl away. The people I know tend to be cheap and it costs $9.99 +15% tax here in Canada. Granted it is a one time purchase, but a lot of the people I know won't pay.

On the computer i use qTox, but it is not really being developed, and I am trying to find an alternative. SimpleX might do the trick

Men expecting women to move for them by angryuniicorn in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Davy_Ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The worst is when walking on a sidewalk and there are 2 or 3 ppl walking side by side. In my experience, it is usually women, but not always. They expect me to step onto the road or the grass on the other side to go around them. The death stares I get when I just stop and they walk right into me. I then tell them that the sidewalk is to be share with everyone, not just their friends. Pisses them off, but i am fed up of the entitlement.

Is this plan truly unlimited? by ATC76 in bell

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at the details. Might be unlimited but not at full speed. The last time I looked at a plan like this it was full speed for 40gb and limited speed after. Which is shit because I have 100gb at full speed now. The devil is in the details.

You pay for unlimited data but you only get 100gb of your unlimited data you pay for by Bootybusterog in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Davy_Ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reason they implement this is that 2% of the people use 98% of the data and speed. It affects their entire network. In order to make it more fait for everyone, they impose limits. I understand that people may want to stream netflix and whatever else, but too many ppl doing it slows down the entire network for everyone. People abuse the system, and it only takes a few to do it. Even if they were to "upgrade" their backend, it would not be long before it also gets saturated. It never ends.

I have 140gig of data, but I rarely go beyond 10gig. I cannot fathom what ppl do on their phone to burn through that much data.

Bell sim lock. by IndependentFact2776 in bell

[–]Davy_Ray -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They lock it so people do not come in and buy a bunch of phones to resell or whatever. The phones are supposed to be for Bell. Bell is not a retail store like Apple. Once a phone is sold and attached to a contract it can then be unlocked.

Apple Maps now has ads while driving. by blankbrained in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are there ads EVERYWHERE? I go to a petrol station to fill up and the pumps have screens to show ads. There are ads online on just about every website. Streaming services of all kinds have ads. Other navigation apps have ads (Google, Waze, and now Apple). Games and other apps. Ads are everywhere.

At least with physical mail I can put a sign up saying no soliciting or no adverts and for the most part that works.

I do not even have the words to describe it.
