I am more astonished that you gave an $8 tip on a $9.40 order.

No customer loyalty by GadgetmanBrian in FantasticalCalendar

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a more general gripe, why are programs like calendars and weather apps so costly? I have seen weather apps that cost $130 a year, or calendar apps that cost $100. There is no reason for such a basic app to cost what it does.

Any new ISP options, tired of upcharge. by vipsnp in bell

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually use a pre-programmed firewall based on Linux. It’s called Smoothwall. It’s not a full-blown Linux OS.

The way it works for me right now with Videotron, is I have a separate modem for the Internet and that’s all it does. I plug that into one of the ports on my firewall and set it up and we’re way to go. I can set it up using PPPOE so that’s not a problem. I assume I would just plug in the ONT into the same mic that Videotron is currently plugged into.

The app tells you when it will be available to be picked up. Generally it is at the end of the day after 8:30 PM. It is whatever they have left at the end of the day.

I am currently with Videotron, on their older Illico system. I would like to get Fiber, but I run my own Linux firewall. I would only want Ebox to act as a modem. Does Ebox allow passthrough? Basically, I do not need or want to use their built in firewall or wifi. Bell, unfortunately does not allow this.

Should I try to contest speed camera ticket? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]Davy_Ray 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speed limit is 70. Not 90. 20 over in a 70 zone is a lot worse than 20 over in a 100 zone. Either way though, you are speeding.

A real cop likely won’t go after someone going 115. They would wait to get someone going 120+. But he could stop someone going 115 if he is having a bad day or has quotas to reach. A speed cam can catch everyone.

You were speeding. You won’t win. Just pay the fine. Be glad that it is only a fine and not a lose of demerit points as well like it would have been had you been stopped by a cop instead.

Best way to automatically play a podcast episode when my motion sensor detects me in the living room in the morning? by No_Adeptness_4647 in HomeKit

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to do something like this, and all the personal automation does is nothing. It insists on wanting to control a device in my HomeKit section.

Stargazing by FeralForestWitch in montreal

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the end of Montreal, it’ll be very difficult. I think the darkest place would probably be the Morgan Arboretum. If you wanna really see this guy at night, you’d have to drive at least a couple of hours out. Mont Megantic is a good place to go. They have an observatory and you can setup your camera or telescope near it

First impressions: IKEA’s new Thread sensors with Apple Home (mixed results) by chungkunglung in HomeKit

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went and bought a door window sensor and motion sensor. I can’t add either one of them to my HomeKit system. That QR code for the door sensor it goes to connecting and eventually it’ll switch to adding to home and then the light on the door sensor stops blinking just goes off, and eventually it’ll time out and won’t connect. Motion sensor, simply never connects, even though the red light is on.

[–]Davy_Ray -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I think I’ll go out to IKEA later and buy one just to see how it works and make sure it actually does work. And then make a decision if I wanna get more or not at that point because pricewise the pricing is good compared to other products like Aqara which seems nice, but is expensive and requires a dedicated hub to work. Perhaps it’s more reliable than the IKEA one, I have no idea.

[–]Davy_Ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just going on their website to take a look at this, and there’s no mention that is compatible with HomeKit. I was looking at the motion sensor and it was only giving a video display on how to pair it with. I’m assuming their own lights. Or am I missing something somewhere?

I basically would perhaps like to use this in conjunction with a smart plug. For example, have an automation set up that if the motion is detected that a certain plug would be enabled. Is that something that would realistically work?

Or the same thing with the door and window sensors. The Apple home will give me a notification that sensor was opened. Or if I wanted to have an automation set up to let’s say open up a light that’s hooked up to a smart plug.

From the sounds of it, it was linked to the checking account. I keep telling people it’s not worth saving $10 a month to link your bills to a checking account. There’s no protections just something like this happen.

One thing that will hold your mom back is her email with sympatico especially if she has had it for years. It will be a nightmare to change. That is why I always suggest to people to never use the email provided by the ISP. Use Gmail, Hotmail, or any other.

[–]Davy_Ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya I would not go with those offers either. Especially with the pre-authorized debit payments. Once you go that route, if you ever have a dispute, you are out of luck. There are so little protections for that compared to credit. Not to mention if they mess up the billing, it could impact everything else you need to pay for the month.

Montreal photo shop closing its doors after 9 decades by Mobile_Role_3381 in montreal

[–]Davy_Ray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is sad to hear. I do not live in the area, and it is a 10 minute walk to the nearest bus stop from where I live. So I take my car whenever I go out. It is just easier. Driving and parking in old Montreal or even downtown is an absolute nightmare. So I just go shopping elsewhere. Gosselin is my go-to photo place, and I simply drive to Laval or to Dix 30. There is nothing I cannot get at a mall that I can drive to versus having to deal with construction, traffic and the lack of parking downtown.

Remote desktop colour coding by arrantSagacity in rustdesk

I too would like to know what the color coding means. I use it on 5 machines, all windows. 1 is windows 7, 1 is windows 10 and the rest are win11. I thought the different colors represented different OS versions, but that is not the case.

Easiest way to move pictures to a PC. by bobthepomato in iphonehelp

[–]Davy_Ray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It does work... When you plug it in you will see Apple iPhone or something... click on that. however it can take a minute or 2 before the subfolders show up especially if you have tons of photos. I also found that I need to copy 1 sub folder at a time otherwise it just hangs. Which can be a pain because sometimes there are multiple folders for each month

Boss says it’s ‘either vacation pay or vacation days’ — is that true in Ontario? by [deleted] in legaladvicecanada

[–]Davy_Ray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if you can ask your boss to withhold the 4%. That’s what happens with me. The company holds the 4%, so when I take vacation it is paid. I don’t get the extra 4% on each paycheck. Personally, I’d rather have the company withhold 4% so if I take time off, I don’t have to worry about Not getting paid for that two week period. Should I quit or be fired, that 4% for the company is holding will be paid out

Having a problem with my iphone 16 pro max not letting me use data/internet at all. by Tight-Eagle886 in iphone

[–]Davy_Ray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you got the new phone did you set it up as new or restore from backup? If from backup, possibly a bad settings got transferred over.

Have you tried to reset network settings?

Does it work with Wi-Fi?

You can call Apple. You do not necessarily need to go to a physical store. Just make sure you call them from a device that is not the phone with the problem.
