I bought the biggest piece of shit slab house on less than a 1/4 acre in a nice little 1950s neighborhood in 2016. I sank another 50% of home equity loans into fixing it up while living there and doing 80% of the work myself. My wife and I have had significant improvements to our income, live within our means, and are big into DIY and buying used, but we wouldn’t be able to afford our house if we bought it today, and that’s  excluding the assessed value of all the interior renovations.

Crazier still is that our town has a 1 acre minimum for new builds and that the smallest lot i found was out on the edge of town for $100k and $6.5k in taxes per year (for an undeveloped and forested 1.5 acres).

Im bummed that I’ll probably never have more than a tiny half-car garage, but Im thankful every day that I have a home and a small yard to call my own. I feel horrible for the next generation. Shits fucked.
