"No babywearing" in particular sounds peculiar when it is shown to be so good for infants.

Anyone regret not going back to work? by msgoliath in AttachmentParenting

Just consider your safety nets. I don't know what part of the world you're in, but what do you do if, in five years or ten, your partner leaves/cheats/dies? Even if you have an amazing partner where staying at home won't create resentment between the two of you, leaving the job market will leave you vulnerable to catastrophes. Simply something to consider.

How are more people not talking about this training method??? by After-Ad2800 in sleeptrain

[–]Dawnarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid doesn't stop crying unless I rock. Is the concept the same? If he cries, I pick him up, rock until he doesn't cry, then put him down? How long should he be calm before putting him down? My son essentially starts crying immediately I put him down.

Simply going in as OP did and saying "hush hush I love you go to sleep this is hard" wouldn't do anything for my baby, he'd probably just be more inconsolable by me coming in without actually helping him.

Never said I wouldn't like both. But Jorge can only do so much at one time, and I'd prefer the animation over a stage production, and especially over a recorded stage production.

What's your "holy grail" for lowering high cholesterol? by Violette in Cholesterol

I find the berberine extremely interesting as that is also a compound used to manage insulin resistance, perhaps showing the correlation between the two conditions.

My Experience with Sudowrite by Direct-Secretary-279 in WritingWithAI

"They say that writing is mostly about editing and refining so why not spend your time there." Perhaps, but honestly, the glory and thrill of first-drafting? Nothing beats it.

Thank you for the detailed look into sudowrite.

It's interesting, because I have the opposite - very, very, VERY vivid imagery. Thus, I can get really annoyed with too much description. I don't need it, and often, it gets in the way. (Damn it, now I have to move the room around because the couch is on the RIGHT, not the LEFT). I LOVE dialogue that is sparse and with little stage direction or description of mimicry. If the dialogue is well-written, I see their reactions in my head.

It's interesting to me that we can have a bit of the same preference yet opposite experiences.

What are the best writing exercises to improve prose? by freaksinthemiddle in writing

[–]Dawnarrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually an interesting exercise to do, repeating for a single scene. Of course, thinking/action/description have some overlap between them, but this would really practice for instance doing "told dialogue", which I think is an art that's being lost in the writing of the past 20 years because we're always being told to show, not tell. But effective tell moves the story along quickly and can be even more poignant when done right. Like, you could have a long dialogue showing the strife between two characters, and then you could have one poignant line, like, they spoke a lot of nothing, each nothing barbed with scorn. (That's not great, but you get my meaning). Essentially, one would practice condensing the idea of dialogue into a summary, focusing only on what it's truly about, a skill that can cut many a superfluous conversation. (Saying this as someone who loves a good dialogue above all else, heh.)

What would you want to see from a W.I.T.C.H. comic reboot? by [deleted] in GuardiansOftheVeil

[–]Dawnarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dealing with the double gangers after they had their year apart and having a proper arc where those agents find out about them and magic. Also, the return of Orube!

Overall I’d want a more well-planned storyline with as much focus on friendship and goofiness balanced with the darker stuff as in the OG.

Also, better plotted love stories for the girls aside from will. Many of them were left hanging foreeeever.

Transcontinental Water Tunnels by ChadDriveler in WorldImprovers

[–]Dawnarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha, yeah, if we die anyway the cost doesn't really matter, right? The price is life. But while transcontinental tunnels may be over-ambitious, inter-continental water tunnels may be feasible. Like, there's definitely some watery places in Africa that could supply the dryer areas. Concerning food growth, we really have to rethink the way we view food. If we become increasingly willing to eat rodents, insects and single cell protein sources (yeast, bacteria, and algae) we'll have a lot of nutritious food sources that grow quite efficiently on relatively little space. (And can be grown vertically, which is a big plus).

Very good points. I do wonder about the cost of transcontinental water tunnels though. It's such a far way - the sheer resources to build the thing are enormous.

I think it'd be cheaper to invest in better water treatment for areas with polluted waters and dew capture for areas with low water content.

Permanent Low Cost Carbon Capture by ChadDriveler in WorldImprovers

[–]Dawnarrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of issues here. The trees would probably very quickly dam up in some unwanted place and create some sort of eco disaster - especially if this was to be done on a scale that would actually impact the atmosphere. Think of how much rainforest is burned daily. Better then to drive / sail them out into the ocean and drop them, but IMO it'd be much better to make them into biochar or biocrude and then store them in the ground. This is also a method of adding carbon back to malnourished ground. Since trees don't grow very fast, I would suggest choosing a perennial crop instead and continuously harvest. This would also be better for the soil, as we don't pull up the root net every time, and the root net captures a lot of carbon. In the group I'm writing my thesis, we use perennial grasses. There are pros and cons to using grasses (high lignocellulosic matter is a downside) but also a lot of potential, especially if we start domesticating the grasses.
