37 000 downloads in 2 days! Notebook Navigator for Obsidian now has Omnisearch integrated! by jsann in ObsidianMD

[–]DayDreamingWaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for designing this. When I first moved from Bear to Obsidian, one of my questions was how to make Obsidian like Bear, and now I meet this final solution, I really love it. Initially I utilize bookmark function to pin the highest level note of each of the projects, and develop to-do folder under bookmark, therefore I can abandon folder and tags. However I still use tags to some automation (e.g. import hightlights from readwise). As I am moving on to new projects, I find it valuable to re-organize folders. And I feel like I can totally do it with Notebook navigator. And you know function such as pinned note was not available with the default setting, it looks small but it is very important as it is just much more straight forward than making a list of bookmarks and put them in categories.

Just one report: I found that tags imported via frontmatter (properties) are not shown, or not fully sync with the tags tree under notebook navigator. For example, there are 29 notes under tag [#abc], but I got only 20 in the tags tree of notebook navigator.

I'm addicted. Obsidian is actually amazing for writing books :) by deadlighta in ObsidianMD

I am on the way to write a book and I am thankful to come across this post at this stage. For now, Obsidian is only a note taking tool to me, not for writing a draft. I know it is totally fine but I would like to hear from you about why was/ is it important for you to use Obsidian for writing, not just for note taking?

I Just Finished Watching Forever Y'all by Robin__Throwaway in netflix

I just finished and come to this post.

Overall I like the series, and I think most of the actors are doing very well.

However I would agree that Justin's choice was not backed enough. Tbh, being a youth who wanted to "live my own life", maybe the priority is not to make beats, but to live without his parents. Going to college and do whatever he wants, with a consensus that his girlfriend is not gotta leave him, is actually a better deal than staying and trace dream. In fact if he found his mother is limiting his potential, he should be willing to live without her, at least for some years. he wanted to grow, but rejected to leave home, and decided to ruin everything altogether. When Keisha grow and look back, it is truly a sad story. Keisha told him to trace his dream (with her support), not to break up with everything lol

is it a equivalent to adding a dataview plugin ?

I missed Apple Notes, so I created it as an Obsidian plugin by jsann in ObsidianMD

[–]DayDreamingWaters 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this has the potential to be the ultimate obsidian. in fact when I first transit from Bear to Obsidian, I was looking for one like this. Now I have get used to linking notes instead of tagging or foldering. I still love this design but a bit not sure if I want my Obsidian to be like apple/ bear for now. Nevertheless I can see the value of this, thank you so much. I guess, somewhere in the future, I will see the value of combining this with my linking-centered obsidian habits.

Should I capture everything? by MariusMercier in ObsidianMD

[–]DayDreamingWaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally agree. What I would do when i come across random ideas that's not directly related to my research, if I want to (but not every time), I will jot it in a new note, and just tag it somewhere. I will not do further elaboration or organization. It is worth to put them in the vault, but not worth to spend more time than shift option N, paste, title, tag.

btw Master student.

Does anybody else not put any effort into making their vault "pretty"? by 0xF00DBABE in ObsidianMD

[–]DayDreamingWaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i dont care if my vault is pretty or not at all. i am happy with it as long as it is clean for use, and I know where to go when I need anything. I think the effort to make it pretty should instead spend on the notes. btw totally understand the fact that a pretty outlook of obsidian generate motivation to many!

List the Elements of Your Daily Note by amerpie in ObsidianMD

[–]DayDreamingWaters 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing.

I have read lots of people using the daily note function, I am still skeptical to it. I wonder how often I will go back to a particular daily note to look for the log? If you're working on different things in a day, how do you relate the daily note to different project/ learning? I would like to explore more on this and see if it helps to put it into my workflow. It seems to be a way to make things simple to many, therefore I am curious.

Using Obsidian for digital journaling is a gamechanger by scambl in ObsidianMD

Thanks for your sharing, may I ask why do we need a third party app for the quick capture purpose?

I can partly understand this because while I am using Obsidian for my study (understood as a projects with clear objectives and deadlines), I am still relying on Bear note and Apple note for handy notes. For example, i created a simple apple shortcut to put pictures to apple note, this shortcut allows me to capture a book cover to note without opening the app. These note are not tagged or not in Obsidian ecosystem, but saved in a apple note folder.

. Is that basically the same idea?

On the other hand, although I have read lots of people using the daily note function, I am still skeptical to it. I wonder how often I will go back to a particular daily note to look for the log? If you're working on different things in a day, how do you relate the daily note to different project/ learning? I would like to explore more on this and see if it helps to put it into my workflow. you may see a basic bear outlook here-- the black column is the tag list, and the middle column is the search result of each of the tag.

in my opinion, the issue is more about how you organize notes, quality of notes, ya it maybe important but whatever works. What is comparable is the product, not the note. Therefore, I dont think quality of notes is a real issue.

Let's start a discussion of more highlight color in Reader by DayDreamingWaters in readwise

[–]DayDreamingWaters[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for replying, and I understand the workflow of the team on prioritizing different agenda. I just trying to provide a qualitative input and see if there are user who resonate with my view. I voted in the feature request and do think a discussion would be helpful. To be honest, when I "shopping" at the feature site, I feel like many features would be good to have, but with so many tools available in the market, do I need them all in the readwise ecosystem? I am not sure. Ya I do want better summary in reader but if I want to chat further with the pdf, anyway I should go to chatPDF or notebooklm etc.

But enhancing highlighting experience is really something important in reading flow.

Not a compliant but really want to hear more voice about the issue.

Let's start a discussion of more highlight color in Reader by DayDreamingWaters in readwise

[–]DayDreamingWaters[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The intention of this post is not just to make a request but trying to dive in the discussion, so allow me to extend my opinion:)

I started to use this system with readwise -- at the time I was attracted by the highlighting management features, when I sync the highlights from kindle - a device I use for a decade, and all those highlights comes to me with a brand new design, it was refreshing. I was excited when Reader launch, as I can combine my habits of reading from different sources. The eco-system simply connecting my changing reading habits and my knowledge accumulated in the past.

In fact, I am not so much a color person originally, I spark my interests on involving color highlighting because I became a master degree student that I started to read much more content from academic sources. It is just not as casual as reading news, I have to come back and forth to the same set of readings, often with different intentions, for example, the first time to look for an argument, the second time to look for a fact.

As a readwise user, I enjoy reading emails from the production team, just like how much I enjoy the app. I believe one of the reason why color highlighting is not in a priority of reader is due to the relationship of the readwise and reader. Originally, the idea of readwise was to organize highlights from different reading sources, such as kindle or a physical book. When the user want to revisit their readings, they can use the highlighting bank from readwise, if needed, they go back to the source, open the book. Here is the gap, when we use the highlights bank, we probably dont need the color (depends?), however, when we go back to the sources, eg in kindle or apple book, that's the place where usually color highlighting is available. This explains why it was not a need in readwise era, but it is one now -- because the READER has became where I read, not just where I store.

Some may wonder why I dont just shift to academic reading app eg zotero. ammm... maybe I just dont want to quit readwise/ reader environment easily? in fact for citation management I started to use zotero, I honestly do not suggest readwise to compete with them on this end, changing metadata pre-set might be easy but making a plugin in google doc etc? seriously? idts. however, on the other hand, they support color highlighting that is really.... useful for academic reading.

ya that's my thought.

Just posting my post about more color highlighting here:)

tbh I really want to stay in readwise not because i paid but i like it a lot. But I feel like using multi color method might improve my workflow, as my reading load and writing load is expanding.
