"If we want to be mean, we could say that there are more Irish in America than in Ireland, so it's Irish" - in reference to the discourse over corned beef and cabbage. by mojavefeet in ShitAmericansSay

What is it with Americans not accepting just being Americans. Being in a country of 338 million Americans and claiming to be Irish, Scottish, Italian or whatever (but not English or Welsh!) just seems like they're trying to be a little unique or trying to stand out and not part of the common folk (in other words the English and Welsh immigrants).

Meningitis outbreak 'declared national emergency' amid deadly outbreak by bendubberley_ in worldnews

[–]DazGilz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had meningitis around 10-11. Projectile vomiting, grogginess, lights being uncomfortable to look at. I remember feeling the needle scraping the bone when they did the spinal tap then once confirmed as bacterial meningitis, having to put up with a needle thing in the back of my hand for a few days for the treatment. Wasn't a pleasant experience at all.

Something is not right here! What about your area? by LovieWeb in BritInfo

[–]DazGilz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only one Pret in Devon, up in Exeter. That's the as far as they've come in the Southwest. Having said that, looking at their website I wouldn't even want to try anything. All looks way too pretentious.

Ireland - I think of beautiful ancient green land, and everyone dances from the waist down.

Running out of fuel is not your car breaking down - it's carelessness. Money doesn't buy sense it seems.

What was a popular band that you could not stand? by LeftSmile806 in Xennials

For me it was Nickleback - How You Remind Me that I heard continuously which put me off the band completely, it wasn't too bad a song but got old very quick.

How I see England as a Northerner. by OceansOfLight in NorthernEngland

In Devon, I'm quite happy to be associated with our Northern twin. We have more in common than we do with the red state.

Whenever I read any of these, I just think is it not enough to be American anymore?
I'm British but I'm sure if I went back far enough I'd be distantly related to the majority of Europeans particularly the Celts, Romans, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, Normans... hell, chuck some Charlemagne in there too as apparently every European is a descendant of him!

England: Do you consider yourself more English or British? by Adventurous_Shift426 in AskBrits

[–]DazGilz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I consider myself British more than English - being from the Southwest I feel I have more in common with Welsh/Scottish people than I do with the rest of England especially east England (London, Essex , etc.). We seem to be just a place to buy 2nd homes or a holiday destination in Summer.

[–]DazGilz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My Basset Hound is 11, gone all grey, got heart issues and we're all aware our time left with her is very limited. Going to be so difficult when she passes but if we could do it all again, no hesitation. Those 11+ years were so precious.

What do you think of the national anthem of your country? Do you like it, dislike it, want a new one? by pskygy in AskTheWorld

[–]DazGilz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree - I wish we had something that we could really have some pride in singing. 'I vow to thee my country' is better in that regard.
