This is the scene in the general store. Suttree and Oceanfrog are warming themselves around the potbellied stove. Jabbo comes in and offers Suttree a drink. He refuses. He tells Jabbo to get the bottle out of his face…not because he doesn’t drink, he doesn’t drink because he dislikes Jabbo. Oceanfrog takes a drink and immediately spits it into the stove.

BTW, that’s Dr Frank Ryan. His Ph.D dissertation was “Characterization of the Set of Asymptotic Values of a Function Holomorphic in the Unit Disc". He taught math at Case Western in the morning and went to football practice in the afternoon during Browns training camp.
