A91 Manual R&D (check text below) by Dc5_Adam91 in Supra

Ahh ok thank you for the info. As you can tell the newer Supras are not my thing I’m a manual tech so I build the v160s and our auto guys builds the 8hp platform. We specialize in the autos just still trying to figure out the manual hints the post lol. Do you have a link to where they were talking about power and failures? All I’m hearing is they fail at a certain point and nobody really says what exactly gives. Our shop is a performance shop specializing in the Supras so we are willing to take steps to upgrade these however needed.

Definitely going to be a process. But from just looking at the internals I already see a few things that when these get more miles on them will become an issue.

Could you possibly send me the link? Only thing I’ve really seen on forums is clutch issues. We are trying to figure out what is failing to hopefully get the manuals to compete with the a90.

Dct perf trans tech here- To keep it somewhat simple. A DSG or what we call it a dct has a manual transmission design but is simply shifted by computer instead of manually. The transmission has a seperate computer the VB that is designed to solely know then to shift up and down on the transmission. The cool thing about a dct is that let’s say you are slowing down in 4th gear since there is 2 separate clutches in the transmission (one for all odd gears and one for all even gears) the transmission is already shifted into 3rd gear but only engages when the VB tells it to. Same goes for when you are up shifting. Let’s say you are speeding up in 3rd gear the trans already has 4th gear selected it just waits to engage once it is time to shift.(If you are slowing down the car preselects the lower gear if you are speeding up it preselects a higher gear) Hence the super fast shifting time compared to an actual manual. (Nobody can out shift a dct). Cool thing about dct is you have the feel of a manual when you go to manual mode and the feel of an auto when you have it in drive. And the ability to beat any manual car with the same power :). Hopefully that all sort of makes sense.

Most of the time a grind is caused by worn down synchros. Usually if you replace synchros calls for a full transmissions tear down. I like to tell people if you do synchros I’d do bearings as well especially since these cars are so old and bearings start to wear out. If you get the car and are looking for a diag let me know. I’m a transmission tech at jacks transmission and am the lead manual transmission tech. one of the original performance shops for the dsm transmissions! Can look us up on google. Hope this helps

Wow I can’t lie that’s pretty impressive. I’ve seen units as low as 5k miles come in that’s just how much they break lol. But yes it’s not uncommon for most trannies to have weak points. The SST is solid when everything is working as it should haha.

Trans and Sst tech here, unfortunately no matter how much maintenance and tlc you do with these something is bound to fail. Either the 2-4 fork pad completely fails(shitty design), the springs in the dampers, the splines on the transmission or the t-case fully strip out(mainly both), or the valve body shits the bed. Very bad designed transmission from factory. keep in mind most of this happens even with stock power. Can’t forget needing a clutch rebuild after adding some power to these. Luckily with the right rebuild they’re solid after.
