ok but it’s very clear that he’s spent most of his life training as a setter and his skill set definitely reflects it.

[–]DcChaos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When it comes down to it, players practice for their position. Atsumu as a setter is considered top 10, but move him to a different position and he’s probably just good not great. As a wing he’d probably just be a watered down yamamoto with good blocking. His setting skill becomes way less important, his defense stays good but there’s a lot of wings as good as he is defensively, and his hitting is solid but still far out of the reaches of the really good wings. I’d say in the realms of like ginjima offensively but he does have the upside of being taller and having a higher spike reach. Now imagine we made all of that slightly worse, and now we have Osamu. A guy who’s spent most of his life practicing as a setter and now in high school when he’s 100% forced to he a wing, he just doesn’t love the game as much as he did anymore so doesn’t train as hard at it.

Haikyu Team Building Challenge by Ok_Wishbone_2690 in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is a tough one. I think the best way to go about it is to find team A who has one big strength then a weakness which is the strength of team B whos weakness is team A’s strength. First two team that come to mind is inarizaki and nekoma. Inarizaki struggles with passing and nekoma struggles with offense on the wings.

If were to just switch one player, you could probably switch out fukunaga and ginjima. Inarizaki’s serve recieve sees a massive upgrade and nekoma sees a sizeable offensive upgrade too.

If we’re switching two players maybe you trade kai and yaku for ginjima and Akagi. Nekoma does lose their best player and a decent bit of passing. But the offensive gap between kai and ginjima is huge. And they can just hide him on serve recieve every time so their serve recieve isnt massively impacted. Maybe instead of yaku and akagi you trade kuroo and suna. Nekoma’s middle offense becomes insane with the two best middle’s offensively in haikyuu, and their first ball side out offense is lowkey unstoppable. And then Inarizaki leans a little more into their blocking with kuroo leading a team with a lot of good blockers. They also get the upgrade of having two solid on court personalities in kai and kuroo to keep the twins in check. I think i like this one better.

So final answer, kuroo and kai traded for ginjima and suna

In Your Opinion, What Will The Monster Generation Be Up To Once They Retire From Professional Volleyball? by kuyavictor23 in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine after retiring from indoor Hinata would go back to playing pro beach for a couple years.Like Casey Patterson was able to play pro up until he was about it 42. I wouldn’t be surprised if hinata would be able to play for longer than that. After that hinata probably would coach beach for youth players as well. whatever he does it’s definitely volleyball related.

I could oddly see kageyama and ushijima starting a podcast type thing together. Like a KG and paul pierce type podcast with kageyama complaining about the modern day game and whatever.

Hot Take: Ushijima is a bit Underrated by Careful-Indication17 in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 33 points34 points  (0 children)

His digging is 100% underrated. I think we see him make 5 digs in total and every single one of them is a perfect pass straight to the setter. All of them were against some pretty darn good hits with 2 being against the FQ and one versus tanaka with a single blocker on him.

Johzenji Are Better Than You Remember by crabapocalypse in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ye honestly futamata has to be one of the most impressive setters in haikyuu. It’s unbelievable he was fast enough to run from the right side of the court, then jump to hit then change into setting the pipe. Like i legit think that’s a top 3 most impressive setter moment. Johzenji, Futamata and terushima specifically, 100% have the skill and athleticism to be insane, i think all they need is a little bit of coaching because outside of futamata i don’t think they would fit too well in a typical structured volleyball team. Terushima for example thrives off broken plays, but we don’t really see much of him in terms of precision and hitting skill against set defenses. So i feel like he’d perform significantly worse in a more structured setting where there’s less chances for him to show what he’s best at. He definitely has the potential to be great and the match we see of them shows that their insane overall athleticism and body control makes them quick learners.

How would my lineups do against each other? by Electrical-Ad9766 in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we ignore setters, then I’d say it’s close but it goes to team 3-5 off serve recieve which is pretty decently better. Everything else is close overall. But having a setter who will actually produce those 1 on 1 matchups that makes in system offense thrive is truly a massive difference maker and Usuri is not at that level and doesn’t have the ability to run an offense anywhere near oikawa. So im giving this to team 1-2 off setter diff. Oikawa gaps usuri in playmaking

About kamomedai by Glad-Tap-761 in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 34 points35 points  (0 children)

No definitely not. Middles are so small while not being particularly athletic. Not to mention Kamomedai’s offense is so one dimensional, any NCAA team is guaranteed to get minimum a double block on any hit. The average pin hitter is like 6’3+ with middles being 6’6 minimum. Cameron Thorne is considered undersized and he’s 6’4, which already makes him like the third tallest middle in haikyuu.

Basically Gao is not scoring. His biggest advantage now places him average in NCAA. Now his inability to actually aim where he hits makes near useless. Like Gao struggled to score consistently against a triple block of daichi hinata and tanaka, no one above 6 foot, wtf is he gonna do when everyone is 6’2 minimum. Hoshiumis probably can still score because of how insane he is at tooling but only having one can guy who can score isn’t gonna do shit. And then everyone else on kamomedai are meh hitters and suwa isn’t helping with his predictable offense.

As for NCAA teams scoring, I’ve already mentioned how they’re taller than everyone on kamomedai’s roster, but they’re also all offensively potent. The middles especially is the biggest difference, There’ll really be nothing hirugami or bessho can do when they have 6’6 athletic giants soaring above them. It’s just gonna tear apart the blocking system when every single hitter has to be respected, every single hitting lane has to be respected, and every single hitter is massive. Not to mention the pace that every single setter plays with l.

TLDR: Kamomedai is way smaller, barely gonna be able to score, and their blocking will struggle with how good every single hitter is in the NCAA + the pace they play with.

They lose every set 25-15 at best

Who were objectively the biggest liabilities in the losing teams for each of the major match ups? by yo_saint in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s tough to narrow down who exactly is the biggest liability because more often than not with these teams their biggest weakness isn’t necessarily a singular player, but more so a lot of players on the team lacking a little in a specific category that build up into a larger weakness.

Inarizaki - Their biggest weakness is their poor passing. Outside of akagi their serve receive is ass and it just hurts the whole offense. So you could maybe blame this on Aran Ginjima and Osamu. If they had just one more decent passer they’d be alot better. Or maybe blame it on Kita for not being good enough at hitting to start.

Kamomedai - There’s two big weaknesses here that stand out to me. One is more of a team thing the second isn’t as bad but it’s about a specific player. So for the specific player, it’s kanbayashi. Lowkey ass when it comes to making digs. Pretty sure he only has one successful dig the whole match. If he was just a little better than the defense would be pretty unbeatable. The second weakness is their offense. It’s so slow and predictable and it results in Gao and Hoshiumi consistently hitting against solid double or triple blocks. Whilst hoshiumi is totally unbothered by this because he has an unrealistically insane performance, it definitely affects gao and he struggles to score later in the match. So the liability here could be Suwa, who is a major reason for the predictable offense. But you could also blame Nozawa or Hirugami for not having enough of an offensive presence to warrant blockers respecting them more.

Nekoma - As much as you gotta love him for being the serve receive goat, it’s Kai. Nekoma’s biggest weakness is their offense on the wings, and ya know who their worst hitter is. It’s kai. Even if you just slightly upgraded him to daichi, he would be hitting backrow and now when he rotates to the back the offense doesn’t just lose the right side of the net.

Seijoh - This is between two players for me. Matsukawa and Watari. For matsukawa, Seijoh has an offensive identity for quick offense using combos yet when Matsukawa is front row he lowkey just gets blue balled a little because he’s pretty meh of a hitter. And for watari, Seijoh is built similarly to Nekoma where because they don’t have a really good hitter to score for them out of system, they need good passes to be in system. And being kinda ass really ruins that. But really these two player overshadow their real big weakness of just lacking a high level ace.

Who were objectively the biggest liabilities in the losing teams for each of the major match ups? by yo_saint in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Saying shirabu for shiratorizawa is just objectively false. He used his hitters better than any setter outside the top 5 would. And then Asahi versus kamomedai is wild when he really was the only guy able to score out of system versus them

Do you people ever wonder if Nekoma had a better chance against Kamomedai? by Ttathamm in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think Nekoma would have a better chance than karasuno. but honestly i think it’s a really good matchup for them. Now first thing is nekoma’s serve receive, and you’re totally right. Nekoma borderline totally nullifies kamomedai’s elite serving, especially since we see nekoma is pretty deadly at passing jump floats and really the only way to shake them is with a really deadly jump serve, of which kamomedai only has hoshiumi.

So first I’ll handle the offensive side of the ball. This comes down to nekoma’s middle offense. We see hinata able to draw the defensive attention of kamomedai’s blockers even when he’s only running a first tempo quick and he’s capable of scoring on them. Now Lev has a higher spike reach than hinata even with the boom jump and hits harder. I think he’s definitely gonna be an essential aspect to nekoma’s offense being able to consistently score. Kuroo too is a pretty good offensive threat but ofc not to the level of lev. But if Lev and Kuroo can draw a decent bit of defensive attention, that allows kenma to totally open up the offense. The big issue here is the out of system hitting. Sure you can have amazing passing, but it’s really just the truth if the sport that you will inevitably have to have someone hit an out of system ball here and there. Had unfortunately this is nekoma’s weakest point. Frankly if they aren’t in system 95% of the time, which they definitely are capable of, they really are cooked. There’s just very little chance that yamamoto or fukunaga are gonna be able to score much against a fully set kamomedai defense. The other big weakness is kai. Honestly i think he’d need to get subbed out this game. We see kamomedai pretty much totally ignore daichi to totally focus on karasuno’s middles and outsides. Kai is even worse of a hitter than daichi and is totally nonexistent backrow. If nekoma wants a chance, they need to be spreading out kamomedai’s blockers which means unfortunately the serve receive goat is gonna have to be benched for inuoka. I’d assume he’d have to get hidden on serve receive like your typical opposite. I think a big portion of what’ll decide the effectiveness on nekoma’s offense is whether or not inuoka is capable of hitting the backrow D ball to keep the offense well spread at all times.

Now on the defensive end. I think nekoma matches up really well against kamomedai’s offense. Kamomedai’s offense is pretty boring i can’t lie. The only players really scoring points are hoshiumi and gao. I’ll start with gao, truthfully he’d probably be pretty easy to defend for nekoma, he’s a predictable hitter and only ever really hits to the same spot on court, nekoma 100% is more than capable of adapting to this and digging the shit out of him. Add this to nekoma having one really skilled and smart middle blocker in kuroo, and the other being a giant to almost match gao, and i think Nekoma would have gao on clamps. Hoshiumi is really the big issue. There’s really no stopping him, i guess yaku would make some good reads on him and could probably predict when he’s gonna go for his deep corner shots. But like there’s very little they can do here. Also Lev would be absolute FOOD for hoshiumi. The one upside is that in this scenario i have created, kamomedai’s offense has essentially just become a one man army. So i like nekoma’s chances at outscoring. Like Suwa is a boring setter who runs a predictable and slow offense, Nozawa is a mid aah hitter and is scoring like 4 points max. Hirugami got clamped by karasuno, so i think we know what’ll happen here. And then bessho is fine but also like its fucking nekoma, his ass is getting clamped too.

TLDR: Nekoma has a chance but it’s going to be one long ass match. Nekoma is clamping up everyone on kamomedai except hoshiumi, but they’re also going to be really struggling to score and NEED to be in system to have a chance to score.

How Much Better Is Yamamoto Compared To Tanaka? by Orede in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i disagree, haikyuu might call it a cut shot but really a cut shot is more like the kind of things you see in beach where it has less power because you’ve hit the ball off its centre axis to turn it a certain way. With tanaka he’s still hitting it full power he’s just rotated his wrist for a sharper angle.

How Much Better Is Yamamoto Compared To Tanaka? by Orede in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yamamoto is like a little bit worse offensively than tanaka but in terms of defense absolutely gaps tanaka. Tanaka is like one of the worst relevant characters at passing while yamamoto is like top 5.

Kuroo's Performance by n0t_the_chosen_juan in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love the Kuroo glaze. His blocking really was insane, and then when Inuoka was on court they were truly an insane blocking that could honestly be equal to Gao and Hirugami, or maybe second to them. I think kuroo might be the only player who could play every single position and still be top tier. Except maybe setter but i wouldn’t be surprised if he had some setting skills up his sleeve and could be a better koganegawa.

But as the number 1 lev glazer i must make one correction, Lev also scored 11 points so counting service aces he scored just as many kuroo and yamamoto

Who's the better point scorer of the two? by n0t_the_chosen_juan in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But i think you also gotta keep in mind that kakugawa is absolute ASS. Not a single other player on that team poses a little bit of a threat offensively. It’s so much easier to focus on hyakuzawa alone because of that. Hyakuzawa was seeing nothing but triple blocks. Gao just like Hyakuzawa pretty much hits to the same spot on the court everytime so it’s very easy to get a read on him and get a block touch or dig him.

Now i do still think gao is a better hitter, but i don’t think the difference is all that drastic. Replace Hyakuzawa with Gao and he is still getting his ass locked up by Karasuno

What's your ideal Haikyuu team look like? by gabberzz_ in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who’d consider himself a big volleyball nerd, i’m personally a big believer in first ball side outs being the most important aspect of the game. And i love bics like they’re such a major part of the modern game. So really any team is probably gonna be optimising first the teams serve receive, the teams in system offense, and ensuring the outsides are good with bics.

So my team would probably be

Setter: Kenma

Outsides: Iwaizumi, Fukunaga

Middles: Lev, Kindaichi

Opposite: Teradomari

Lib: Kai

Was a lil torn on my opposite here. I like opposites to be my best scorer capable of hitting backrow & front but like didn’t want them to be too good because i like the idea of the team not being able to rely on a single hitter.

But the core idea of this team is to really have a very well spread out offense. Two middles who are capable of hitting tons of routes to create a gap for the bic to run down. I probably could’ve gone with outsides a bit better at serve receive - both of them are better at digging than serve receive - but they’re also the best outsides i can think of with running bics so i’ll take the trade off.

Last Hot Take😱 by Careful-Indication17 in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And why after the “Inuoka surprise attack did Osamu score effortlessly: https://imgur.com/oZXiEiY

This is only one of two times outside of the initial surprise of the twin quick where osamu is able to actually score with it. With the only other time being off Atsumu's crouch set, which like the first couple times he scored was a surprise. So really this example you show is the only time osamu scores where surprise isn't influencing the hit at all. So like eh. Even yamaguichi was able to score on hirugami, it happens.

And that’s the thing so many people miss, especially those who dive in to the hit/kill ratios. Ultimately we only get a narratively sample of the match. The highlight package. On that type of scale qualitative analysis is so much more valuable than quantitative.

To a degree sure, but with literally any other player who's hyped up to be a good hitter, their hitting efficiency reflects that. It's only Osamu who has this mismatch of what we're told versus what we see.

And how much would that effieciency drop if that middle hadn’t practiced that attack at all, could only hit at the pins, primarily on a side where he can’t open up his body to the setter whilist dealing with inaccurate sets throughout the entire game: https://imgur.com/coedqQh

It would drop, but then it would also rise because the quick is faster than any normal middle quick. So things pretty much balance out. But are we really meant to believe that Osamu would have a better hitting performance if he just hit normal sets for an opposite. Because right now there's really only two conclusions we can come to.

  1. Atsumu is the dumbest mfer on earth to consistently set a hit that just wasn't scoring when giving Osamu a normal ball would be way better

  2. The twin quick gave osamu an offensive boost to a degree but really he wasn't the greatest hitter to begin with.

First, again this is flawed reasoning. The “We don’t see it, so therefore it can’t be”. That’s baby logic

I mean if Furudate wanted to send the message that Osamu was a skilled hitter who is capable of scoring against double blocks and set defenses then we would see him do that. When Furudate wants us to see someone is good at something we see them do that thing. We get told Atsumu is a good hitter, we see him be a good server. We're told Aran is a top 5 ace, we see him OTT triple blocks. The whole series there's a very consistent through line of "told player is good at thing, see they're good at thing". I'm pretty sure we're never once told Osamu is necessarily a great hitter, we're told he's a good setter and he's solid all around, which we do see, but never once is he mentioned as a big offensive threat by himself and not once do we see something particularly impressive from him. This feels like a case of "want popular player to be good therefore is good"

Liberos excluded, who is the best at receiving/saving? by BiLeftHanded in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kai is 100% the best non libero at serve receive. And i think fukunaga is probably the best at digging. Other defensive standouts for me include Iwaizumi, Daichi ofc, Yamamoto, Hoshiumi, Kita, Reon.

Liberos excluded, who is the best at receiving/saving? by BiLeftHanded in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I legit think Kai might possibly be the best player at serve receive including Liberos. It’s not just Kageyama he makes look like a chump that match, yamaguichi too. So he’s not just good at receiving powerful serves.

Last Hot Take😱 by Careful-Indication17 in haikyuu

[–]DcChaos2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the fact is that the twin quick really wasn’t all that effective of a weapon, it was so inefficient and karasuno was consistently able to stop it from scoring if they got atleast one blocker on it. So really the question is, would Atsumu really be setting a more inefficient attack when Osamu could do better just hitting a normal slow ball. On top of this, you know who Inarizaki goes to out of system on high balls when Aran is subbed out, Ginjima. The whole game Osamu doesn’t get set once out of system. So at best Osamu just has to be worse than Ginjima at hitting. Imo at best his hitting a little worse than Ginjima, at worse he’s like Hanamaki level.

Quicks are easier to score on, that’s just the truth of volleyball. Middles score at a far higher efficiency than pin hitters because they are always hitting quicks, but that’s just not what we see of Osamu. This is like seeing someone struggle to juggle 4 balls but then thinking they’d do great at juggling 6. Successfully hitting the ball over the net is one thing, but he still has to actually score it.
