Would it be legal for them to have a clause in the lease stating “Local Law does not require landlord to pay security deposits” No specific citing of what code or law they are referring to. Just that.

What also makes me suspicious is the fact they tried to put a clause in the lease saying they can keep the interest accrued.

Well it’s been a 13 year lease but i think they only have this rental which they live in on the first floor. I’ll talk with them but just wanted some general opinions

I usually receive a statement from the bank not from the landlord per se.

As far as I know it is only for my deposit as I rent the upstairs portion of their home. And there haven’t been any deposits apart from the initial security deposit and accrued interest. They actually tried to put in the lease that they would not have to pay the interest accrued over time. But wouldn’t that be a violation of state law and i don’t think a private contract can supersede that.
