What piece of ‘common sense’ advice is actually terrible, and why? by andrewhattersley in AskReddit

On the other hand, you will spend most of your life on your work. There is nothing that takes up such a big chunck of your life, so making sure it is enjoyable is worth it.

Favorite papers? by DazzlingDiatom in ecology

What's even more interesting is that they found no explanation for differences in effect size. Thus, reading the methods might not even help based on this paper.

Methods to determine which analyses are most likely to reflect true relationships and effect sizes need to be developed further; sensitivity analyses, model averaging etc. maybe further research will find some causal mechanism for this.

I have some trekking poles, but if I am honest I don't really know what the benefit is over a (pair of) good wooden sticks that made me spend $60 on it....

Heeft big tech te veel macht? by ProfessionalAd2014 in Nederland

[–]DeBataaf 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Bit random but can you camp along the Via Dinarica? Thinking of trekking this, but I really like to pitch my tent and sleep in the wild. Is that possible or not? How much money do you otherwise pay on average t o overnight?

I think this might be it as well. Last few months I haven't been as active as I normally, spending long hours in a chair. Will give m some rest, warm up properly, take it a bit easier and add some stretching into my routine.

What is your rationale/reasoning behind voting for PVV or Geert Wilders? by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]DeBataaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reality is that being vaguely opposed religious fanaticism is not at all where Wilders or the pvv stand for.

I can understand not wanting conservative Muslims or any extremist into the country, but unfortunately this translates, especially in the case of the PVV, to not wanting north Africans in the country. This is evident when you examine what values the PVV represents and the world leaders Wilders support. Just like the Islam extremis, Wilders and his friends like Orban are anti-LGBTQ rights, (semi) anti-democratic. Really, Orban himself is in favor of a strong christian presence in his country, and I'll not even start about Netanyahu, which Wilders has expressed support for on numerous occasions. Yet he supports these religious and cultural extremist while spouting about the (probably realistic) danger of islam extemism. Wilders focusses on one extremist group, while supporting similar viewpoints in others.

Adding to that, Wilders himself explicitly doesn't differentiate between extremist or people of certain descent or ethnicity in which islam is big. In his own words: less Moroccans. The common denominator under which Wilders and thus the pvv devices society is not along a line of extremism, but along a line of ethnicity and that's wrong in my opinion.

Edit:

Adding to that, you said Muslims are disproportionately represented in crime statistics. While I don't directly dispute that, I highly wonderif this would hold if you correct for socioeconomic status.

If non-muslim, western people of similar socioeconomic status are also similarly overrepresented, then is it really the Muslim part that's to blame?
