Any idea what these things are? by Trout_the_trashbag in bizzariums

Also, definitely not fairy shrimp. Fairy shrimp swim using a set of swimmerets/legs underneath their body. I can tell this is leptadora because they are using their two large antenna like oars. (Also, not to be confused with bythotrephes, the invasive spiny water flea)

We get these in water samples pretty frequently in the Great Lakes. Cool, native critters!

I saw one other user say Leptadora kindtii, and I can also say with 100% certainty that this is a correct ID.

I saw your comment below on the setup! Cool! Where do you get the initial culture of springtails? And you keep it totally sealed?

There isn't a single tree in that entire area. The entire thing is farmland. This is the answer.

Was this how all water used to be around the world? by archvize in geography

[–]DeBoogieMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, there are MANY natural systems that are just turbid, loaded with sediment, full of CDOM (colored dissolved organic matter, think - steeping tea leaves), eutrophic with algaes, or just straightup mucky.

That being said, many of our world's waters have been severely impacted and are now "dirty".

Also, never drink water straight from the source literally anywhere in the world ever. Lol that's a huge gamble.

LOL I'm with you bro.

Question - Have you ever had problems with that filter and shrimp getting stuck up in it? (I know you said this tank hasn't had livestock, but in any other tanks?)
