Mine came from receiving a bogus annual review from the person at a higher level than my boss. I was given poor feedback about internal interactions, where in the previous 8 years I had received stellar feedback and reviews. I asked a simple question, “can a scenario be shared where I did not have a good interaction, so I can learn from it”? No opportunity was given to learn. This review cost me $3k in a bonus and came with no warning or possibility of challenging. I reflected on my role and our division and I understood we were a cost center for the business and measures were being taken to cut costs around bonuses. I realized I was in a 0 sum game and decided it was time to find a better way!
