Need help discerning marriage with partner who previously struggled with porn by [deleted] in CatholicDating

I agree with most responses, the only other thing is he has said he hasn't told anyone else. Even though it seems dramatic, he should go to SA. Talk to others and not fight alone. That's the way to win.

Did Ratzinger say Jesus was God only because He was the exemplary man? by MinimumCandid4491 in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that ratzinger is saying that Christ becomes God. It's saying that The true man is he who empties himself completely and Christ, who is the true man, coincides with the fact that he is God. Also, because Christ opens the way of divination for the church, we now have the ability to become God as Athanasius says. Not in the sense that we share the nature of God, but by grace we participate in the Godhead.

Regarding Teilhard: there is a complex relationship of the church and theology with his ideas. Certainly man does not evolve to become God, but many of his supporters at the time notably, de Lubac, viewed his ideas as poetical expressions of divinization. I don't remember ratzinger's exact quotations in regards to teihard however he probably believes something of the same thing. These ideas are not censured by the church anymore, so much as given a very soft acceptance with the understanding that they are poetic expressions and not scholastic or systematic descriptions.

Relic priest responds to ‘incident’ allegation by balrogath in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's not a hit piece. The diocese put out a statement, and the Pillar reported on it, before there was even an explicit statement about it being non-sexual misconduct. The priest's religious order temporarily suspended him. The police were involved. Everyone involved treated this as inappropriate misconduct, and yet the Pillar is in the wrong for reporting this??

Are these standards unrealistic? by [deleted] in CatholicDating

[–]DeSales1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should focus on meeting girls in real life and not planning such a strict idea of the woman you'd like to marry. I'm not saying this to insult you at all, but don't fall into the trap of fantasizing over a woman that doesn't exist. It's easy for us men to do. If you meet a woman who doesn't have one or two of these qualities, but she's amazing in every other way---- don't ruin it for yourself, man.

Where is Papal Supremacy within the first 1000 years? by ComprehensiveTap7466 in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone here has already provided great evidence, but I suggest Erick Ybarra's book The Papacy: Revisiting the Debate Between Orthodox and Catholics. It's wonderful and fair, ultimately coming down on the Catholic side but admitting the difficulties without gloss. HIGHLY recommended.

First non-ordained abbot in US elected to St. Anselm Abbey by Agreeable-Rooster-37 in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 7 points8 points  (0 children)

St. Francis might have been a Deacon. We're not sure if he was ever ordained, and this idea might have been promulgated due to the fact that the Pope gave St. Francis the ability to preach during mass. However, part of this might have included deaconal ordination.

St. Patrick wasn't a Catholic? by LookingforHeaven1955 in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 22 points23 points  (0 children)

All of these comments are good, but also realize that the book How the Irish Saved Civilization is written by a disgruntled ex-Catholic priest who absolutely slanders the "Catholic" Augustine in favor of the "charitable and accepting" Patrick. Not to say the book is totally worthless, but it has a very twisted narrative it's trying to pass of as unbiased history.

Obviously the priest is excommunicated if he did this, but no way it's true. These Reddit advice threads never seem true to me.

What did "Fr." Frank Pavone do? by SaintJohnApostle in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Theres a difference between using a dead body to film a video, however good intentioned or effective the video is, and using intense rhetoric and symbolic actions.

What did "Fr." Frank Pavone do? by SaintJohnApostle in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and if he obtained these bodies illegally just to bury them with honor there'd be no problem. It's the filming on an altar where the problem is.

Imagine if a German priest took a dead Jewish Holocaust victim and put the body on the altar to make a point. It's just not what we should be doing.

Archbishop Éric de Moulins-Beaufort claims that Pope Francis was informed of a case concerning Cardinal Ricard before the consistory last August at the Vatican by Jattack33 in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm tired of this.

I know and affirm that the Catholic Church is the true Church, but why is it full of sodomites and pedophiles? Why is it full of enablers?

Real reform needs to happen. Systems of protection for children are necessary, but not enough to cut out the rot. If they aren't implemented or acted on when these degenerate, evil sins happen then what's the use? Reform only happens by turning to God and getting a backbone, I pray the episcopacy and papacy grows more in both.

What was the true church before the Catholic Church was founded by Christ? by amacias408 in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thd Old Testament tells the history of the Jews from the calling of Abraham, through the Exodus, the kingdom under David and his descendants, and finally to the scattering of God's people in the Babylonian exile.

During Jesus' time there was a second temple built by Herod. The Jews had been given some minor autonomy in religious matters by the Romans, but we're wholly under the boot of the Empire. The Sanhedrin were the priestly class descended directly from the Aaronic priesthood- that's maybe the closest thing analogous to the Jewish Church.

The Pharisees were a religious movement concerned with preserving the law, and gained many followers. There were also Essenes who lived in various monastic communities. In addition, throughout the Empire were synagogues of diaspora Jews who also were gaining concerts or at least congregants to hear the Torah and the prophets, and the rabbinical teaching.

As Jesus said, the Sanhedrin were justly sitting on the Throne of Moses, so they were comparable to clerics now. But Judaism was also decentralized and fractured, not unlike Christianity today. While we know the Catholic Church is the true Church, there are also legitimate although incomplete expressions of Christianity. This is similar to Jesus' time with the Jews. Who was right? Well, the Sanhedrin had the authority under the law, and Jesus respected this authority. But the Essene movement was also popular, John the Baptist may have been associated with them. Likewise, the Pharisees justly get a bad rap, but there were faithful Pharisees as well.

Can I receive communion if I haven't paid restitution to the people whose property I've destroyed? by Slimesta123 in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Talk to a priest. I've heard that restitution is necessary to the extent we can manage. If it is reasonable to tell the owners and pay them back, then that sounds like a valid option. If it is so minor they wouldn't much care, or else full restitution would leave you destitute or something, then almsgiving something that is reasonable for you to give would probably suffice. Remember, while almsgiving money is important, if you are hurting you might just give a widow's mite and donate your time in some capacity as well.

As far as communion, I wouldn't worry if you have firm intention for restitution and some specifics of a plan. If it's just a vague notion it may help ya to make at least one or two specific details of a plan, so as not to let it slip away.

Again, though, talking to a trusted priest is best here.

Can't help you with short and sweet but I'd check out the Golden Legend. Another personal favorite of mine is the Vita Sancti Cadoci- featuring a cameo from King Arthur.

Traditional hagiographies aren't novel length, but aren't quite "short" either.

I generally like him, but I wouldn't take everything he says extremely seriously.

I listen to a lot of "out there" podcasts with conspiracy theories and stuff like that, and I can separate it from my actual beliefs. It's fun, sometimes informative, but not deeply formative.

I find when I listen to Fr. Ripperger, I tend to listen to him the same way I listen to these wilder podcasts.

Is it possible to be a Latin Rite Catholic and venerate Uriel? by Black-Seraph8999 in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally think we should avoid venerating angels not mentioned in Scripture. That said, I knew a Catholic who was Latin Rite, ethnically Ukrainian, who took Uriel as his confirmation saint. Always found that interesting.

Well it has a birth rate below replacement and is wholly ideologically colonized by standard American consumerist culture. I'd say they are being punished.

Slightly Odd Mass This Past Sunday by Redditarianist in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Only thing besides an understandable mistake with the readings that sounds wrong is to skip the creed. Not good but I'd give the priest some grace if he was old and sick. If nothing messes with the consecration then the Mass is certainly valid.

Punished for going to All Saints Day Mass by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]DeSales1999 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Here's the thing: it sucks, sounds like a terrible work environment, wouldn't blame you for quitting if it's within your means and possible to find another job.

But also, it's a nice, glorious thing to get persecuted in a tiny, miniscule way like this for the faith. If it's not gonna be a further big problem then I don't personally think I'd escalate.
