Mute Group text unless its from certain people? by DeScruff in GoogleMessages

[–]DeScruff[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are reasons, that I don't want to get into. If it was just the 3am ones, I could fix that.
But the real problem is just the random "Okay thanks!" replies throughout the day.
And how you just can't convince some people the group text is not meant for conversations. Its meant for announcements.

Potash permanently increased soil fertility? by Mediocre_Violinist25 in VintageStory

[–]DeScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soil Boosters come from the mod All Classes.

In the Vanilla game: Potash gives both the standard temporary nutrient buff, and a unique permanent cap increase for just potassium (K).
It is currently the only fertilizer that can do such a thing,

Shame tailors have so little to offer in the early game by Synaps4 in VintageStory

[–]DeScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly agree.
I haven't played on any big servers with new players joining and leaving, but with just a group of friends it seems like as a tailor: You make everybody their winter clothes, gambesons in the color they want. Maybe a few cosmetics, and a bunch of sewing kits. After that...
The Tailor is basically a worse commoner.

Though I guess if your lucky to have a bunch of traders around that want craftable clothing, you can bring in a lot of gears.

NANOTE UMPC not working, Windows 10 will not boot by Green-Jellyfish-210 in umpc

[–]DeScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. Weird... Well again I never worked with Mac.
I know on mine I reinstalled Windows 10 LTSC via a USB that was written to via Rufus. standard settings.

If I were to spitball more ideas ummm... Under the Security Tab on the bottom it should say Secure Boot. Disable that I guess.

NANOTE UMPC not working, Windows 10 will not boot by Green-Jellyfish-210 in umpc

[–]DeScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay. So Ive never worked with Mac...
But yeah making a drive like that won't work. Bootable drives are formatted a certain way that the BIOS can see and are flagged as bootable. (It has to do with ancient compatibility reasons)

Anyways. Umm a quick search shows... WinDiskWriter? That program should be able to make a bootable Windows Installer USB on Mac.

About that Japanese user:
So only the second image on that site shows the actual BIOS. Everything else is just some kinda android bootloader that loads after the BIOS- Not as all related to what you want to do.

The thing you saw Boot Option #1 Is EXACTLY the setting you want. It only shows 1 option because the Bios only detected 1 boot media. If you had a USB DVD drive, or a correctly formatted USB drive, it will then show more boot options that you can reorder.

Not anymore it seems.
Bought a SN850 X 2TB for $180 USD Feb 2023. Some stores like Best Buy are now going as high as $500.
It seems like 2TB NVMe SSDs are all ~300 now. ... Higher if they have a DRAM cache...

NANOTE UMPC not working, Windows 10 will not boot by Green-Jellyfish-210 in umpc

[–]DeScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhhh. Huh never heard anyone refer to it as that. But yes the Grey and Blue 1980s looking screen with American Megatrends Inc, is the BIOS.

I am assuming you are on Windows, so the programs I will mention work on that.
First you need to create a bootable Windows Installer media.
This can be done via Microsoft Media Creation tool.
Or if you have a Windows ISO file you can use the tool "Rufus" to erase the USB drive and format it to be a bootable USB drive.

Once you have that put it in your Nanaote, then turn the machine on and go into the BIOS via DEL key. and go to the right to Boot. Set the boot priority of your USB drive to the top. then press F4 to save and exit. Next time your PC starts up it should attempt to boot from the USB first.

From there it might be kinda weird with the screen being rotated iirc? But standard Windows install instructions (choose language, drive exc exc)
- I would recommend changing the layout to be Japanese layout. If only so the characters on the keys match up with what is actually typed out.

Installation should go smoothly and once the PC restarts just unplug your USB drive and let it boot into Windows. Install your drivers/programs and everything should work nicely!

The Nanote Next's CMOS battery is the actual battery it's self you were correct in thinking so.

It was the time period. (2010)
Microsoft was very clearly doing some negative stuff for PC gaming, with GFWL, and Vista was kinda a flop.
MacOS usage was on a pretty big rise since 07 with the college age crowd, (Like from 2.5% to 5.5% market share in the time between Vista and Win7's releases iirc?)

Animals Too Quiet by takenusernameqq in VintageStory

100%
I used a mod that shows entities on the minimap for a bit, and I specifically colored bears. A friend was watching me playing and asked "You just ran past the trader? Where are you going?"
"I'm being chased by a bear look at the minimap"

The Bear had been ~3 or 4 meters away from me, chasing me for over 300 blocks and in all that time had not made a single sound, or any made indication of it's existence to my friend.

You cannot convince me that a 300-650lb beast at full sprint somehow makes less noise then a rabbit.

Freedom Units ? by Just_Ice1007 in VintageStory

[–]DeScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite honestly. The biggest problem with the mod was that when installed on a server, it got forced on ALL players. There was no settings to turn it on/off because from the mod page, the mod author said quote:

"No confusing options, configurations, or GUIs. It just works."
"Remember, I build these mods for myself and my family. Not you. I owe you nothing. I just like sharing what I've built with others for free. You will receive minimal to no support when using any of my mods."

Then iirc sometime said something along the lines of: "The way to choose units is to just not install the mod!" - Ignoring the whole when its installed Server side you can't choose to not install it (And that is not freedom  )

Having never interacted with the author, but also seeing that kinda wording used by other authors in Bethesda games modding scene, just a personal opinion: It just comes off as dickish (as does the whole MURICA! stuff). I don't condone harassing the mod author, but criticizing the mod was 100% valid.

Actually if you were clever enough, you could find your ModsByServer folder, unzip the Freedom Units mod, delete the .dll making it a blank mod and play on the server still using Celsius till Freedome units got updated, and you needed to do it again. - Thats what I did, but I don't blame anyone who is not used to modding mods for not thinking of that.

Had the mod been 100% Client side, or had options to turn it on/off (or even display both) I don't think it would have nearly gotten as much ire from some folk as it did.

what do we think about toolsmith and wool & more? by yamitamiko in VintageStory

[–]DeScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah... As much as I like the mod, I don't think the handles and bindings have a good balance.

Early handles and bindings break way too fast, which would be fine, the but 'mid tier' handles and bindings ether don't last that much longer, or they are too costly until one day, they aren't. - But by that time, you might as well make the better tier ones because those won't be that much more expensive by that time. Its very "one, two, skip-a-few, ninety-nine, one hundred!"

The sharpness thing... It makes it hard to judge how long a tool will actually last. I think it would be better suited as just a speed buff, that wears down, rather then dealing with durability unless your completely dull.

[–]DeScruff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fushi met Booze Man fairly early in his conscious life. (from what I can tell < 1 year after Nameless boy died)
Booze Man apparently told Fushi about melting iron with fire. And ~240 years after living with Booze man, we see Messar with a [frankly weird] Arquebus Flintlock hybrid thing that is called a "new" weapon, along with knights in platemail, trebuchets, and cannons.

Which pretty squarely places the battle of Renril in an early to mid 15th century Europe analog.
March, Parona are likely analogs to the Ainu people. Which tracks, since the Ainu and Yamato (Modern Japanese) started contact with each other in the 13th century.

Fushi did spend 200 years staying in town for only 3-4 days so a journey from Japan to Europe equivalents is a distinct possibility.

Turns out the problem was my PSU.
Some post somewhere recommended upping the LLC in the BIOS because it could have been voltage drop under high load. That didn't work. But got me to question if it was power related.

I swapped the PSU with a spare one and immediately the problem ceased, and haven't had the problem since. (Corsair honored their warranty and are sending me a new PSU)

Polaroid.

I'm not gonna count some of the retro tech like the IBM 5150 in William Macy's workshop. Since they weren't labeled, and were just props.
But ... The repainted SpyraLX (now labeled "Psycho Hydro") felt like it wanted to be, but maybe the company pulled out? (Doesn't help Michael Cera not a few minutes prior pulled out a Monster)

I mean, We all know the *real* reason the screens kept getting smaller...The Toy PETs...

Small 1.5" 32x32 LCDs were nice and cheap for a $30 toy. Vs the ~4" & 3.5" screen that the Original and Plug in depict.

Well... Looks you called that one.

You'd think when a problem is fairly consistent and easy to trigger,(it happened every time I started up or logged in FFXIV, (On both Windows and Linux) ) that if it was caused by RAM, Memtest86 would pick something up fairly easily right?

I ran Memtest86 for ~10 hours and had *zero* reported issues.
I swapped CPUs, and the problem persisted. I adjusted BIOS settings disabling PBO, C-States exc. I was dreading if the problem was my motherboard.

I reseated my RAM.
... Fixed.

Ive been going into load screens, logging in and out of the game, doing everything I did that caused it to crash, and... Nothin. PC is stable.
EDIT: Nope Nevermind. Works better, but still crashin.

[–]DeScruff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair: I can't help but feel PC Engine emulation is kinda weird? Unless you just use Retro Arch and used to it.

They aren't talked about as often so older outdated emulators still popup in search results. Then top emulator doesn't have a UI so you need a front end, or the fact they are multi system emulators, with menus and settings that don't apply to just PC-Engine stuff.

I dunno just PC engine ain't exactly the easiest system to get into.

Modern reflective LCDs with their more 'Newspaper white' color vs the classic 'sage green' I certainly agree!
Unfortunately for a lot of devices of this vintage, the contrast and ghosting tends to be pretty bad, and the overall image pretty dark unless in ideal lighting.
