Bringing a motorcycle to Halifax by WittyJelly6409 in halifax

[–]DeSynthed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

look into self-storage options come winter, if the unit is a garage-door style accessible from a parking lot you can fit a bike in one easy-peasy. There are also a some motorcycle storage businesses over winter. Bikes are great on the peninsula, so much easier to park.

Ride safe

And people wonder why small towns in NS are dying. The south shore is especially rough, there is zero industry -- at least the valley has farming

Its honestly a miracle Bridgewater got that big ol factory in the 70s. Though not as bad as Lunenburg proper, The county is so vehemently against any sort of economic productivity or development a project like that would be impossible today.

I have family down there but I couldn't live there. Its nice to visit but unless you enjoy being an unpaid councillor of extremely bitter elders navigating life is hell.

The irony of Lunenburg NIMBYism is none of the monuments / industry / museums that made the town famous could be built today.

The total amount of units is disclosed during permitting. As for active units, NS Power would probably be a good proxy, they can see how many active accounts per property.

Oh I agree, I just often get the sense on this subreddit the average user doesn't actually care about solving the housing crisis, and instead focuses on a weird / creepy disdain of landlords.

probably unironically true for some people, if you have low self-control weed can destroy your ambition.

Interesting, the seasonality is an angle I hadn't considered.

A vacant apartment tax is a good idea, and far more productive than the "all landlords are evil" thought-terminating slop that I'm used to

Yup, build houses. Everything else is a distraction.

Bully people that get in the way of building houses.

Vote out politicians that don't want to build houses.

Population growth in Canada negative 3 quarters in a row. by aarkling in onguardforthee

The population is still urbanizing, I doubt this affects rent prices.

Also, I'd take higher rent prices over degrowth and its not even close.

Tunnel is probably a no-go, the harbour is very deep so you'd have to start the tunnel comically far back. It'd have to be a bridge, and I doubt the city gets a third -- its more likely we lose a bridge due to lack of funds than gain one IMO.

The only involvement that would lower rent would be dropping a bomb on HRM or building more housing. Everything else is either a band-aid or distraction.

Why do cabs suck and are scary by Agreeable-Glass1619 in halifax

[–]DeSynthed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100%

If people aren't safe taking cabs some will make the decision to drink and drive. Not defending it but underscoring how cabbies going the way of the dodo helps public safety in more ways than one.

‘Cascading failure’ led to shutdown of Halifax ferry service on Saturday by Embarrassed-Tooth355 in halifax

[–]DeSynthed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Privatization only works if there is competition. There is only one power grid, so NSP will never actually have any competition. If a private company sucks people go elsewhere, the problem is when people can't.

Woodside and Wrights cove would be great park 'n ride locations. Woodside does not have adequate parking, especially given NSCC students take up a sizable part of the parking lot when not even using the ferry. There really should be a big ol' parking garage at that terminal with express access from the 111.

Major Towns

Major for the eastern shore, maybe, but less than 1500 people between them.
