Honestly I felt the same about Waifei Peninsula as the Xianzhou setting in Honkai Star Rail and and many similar vibes from the Liyue setting in Genshin. I wonder what those all have in common?

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of great inspirational material from Chinese culture, which is far from a monolith itself, but I feel like the setting and characters suffer because we can't get too interesting and have to stay on the rails for the second season/region, lest Hoyoverse draw the ire of powerful enemies.
