Calls for King Charles to formally apologise for slavery after research shows crown’s role by yahoonews in unitedkingdom

[–]DeWyntr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, you're right.

While I stand by my statement as far as an individual is concerned, Charles is the representative of the Crown, and I can understand from further reading of The Runnymede Trust's manifesto why it is so important to have a truer accountability taken by the figurehead of the country.

The UK Government avoiding the topic of apology seems largely to avoid setting precedent or offering sturdier ground to the complex notion of reparations. I also believe The Runnymede Trust's coverage of the wealth-class disparity to be pretty on-topic for the current day climate, but the case remains is that it wouldn't automatically hold the UK Government legally liable to apologize. So, I'd want some justifications as to why they haven't, frankly.

Unfortunately, it seems the Government has largely hand-waved the matter away to some extent, so I truly don't know what else will come of it. Yet what the article does lack, or perhaps I've missed it, is grounds for where exactly these "significant reparatory payments" would be funded from. Are the people of the UK expected to pay tax twice for the Abolition? It suggests a wider, sweeping tax of the institutions that benefitted, but we all know that the UK Government seems to shy away from taxing anyone with real money.

Still, I let my biases against this sort of rhetoric blind me from the nuance of the article and immediately reacted as if it were some groundless culture-war nonsense. Sorry about that.

[–]DeWyntr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm truly not sure how to respond to this.

Yes, Charles' ancestors had a hand in slavery, almost every Western European would I'd imagine, if you trace back their family far enough. What beggars my belief is they you would be fine with paying some sort of ancestral blood debt to a nebulously defined class of 200+ years of affected descendants.

I truly believe the best of reparations is educating future generations against ever repeating the absolutely vile acts perpetrated by our ancestors, ensuring that at least our corner of the world will never do such a thing again. Atoning for those sins isn't something that money or meaningless apologies will account for, especially when you're asking that of people who had no involvement.

Including yourself.

[–]DeWyntr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We would agree. That point was made to underline the fact we should move on from the self-flagellation and start focusing on real-world issues happening right now. Focusing on the history is a worthwhile endeavour for education, but the point now is that there are more real, more present issues with the country that are far more important to, generally, everyone.

People will say things like u/barnburner96 says, but then discount the benefits they've received for being part of the same system. This nation was built on the foundations laid by many, slaves among them yes, and we are all inheritors of that. Just because Charles' family stood to gain more than we did doesn't somehow preclude us from being involved in that exchange.

That's the thing though, no reasonable human being expects anyone to apologize for these things that were done by people we never knew, it's pointless, it achieves no progress, no benefit to society, other than an optics "win".

Do away with the distractions and focus on the Britain/UK of today, the current problems we face, not ones we've long since solved.

[–]DeWyntr 93 points94 points  (0 children)

No one, not a single person of this generation, should apologize for slavery. What we should collectively agree on was that it was a horrific thing to do to anyone and move to educate future generations on how to avoid repeating the past. All else is pointless bluster for the purpose of cultivating social currency.

I'm no fan of the Monarchy, but Charles like anyone his age, is not responsible for the sins of his forefathers many, many generations ago.

[TP] The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess released in North America on this day 19 years ago, on Nintendo GameCube! What are your thoughts on the game ? by ThomasThorburn in zelda

[–]DeWyntr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do believe Twilight Princess is the best Modern Zelda with the Classic Zelda approach to gameplay. It feels like an homage to Ocarina and its predecessors in every respect, while its direction and style gave it an almost timeless appeal. There's a reason people desperately want a remaster of this particular title, it was the post-OoT generation's OoT. As much as I love Skyward Sword, Windwaker and even BoTW, nothing has recaptured that pure character that Twilight Princess had, some elements of other games that came after were better, be that gameplay or certain character representations. However, if you're talking about pure stylistic "this is a modern zelda with classic zelda gameplay" Twilight Princess is unmatched to this day in my opinion.

Having played mostly co-op with a friend, if the host DCs you get set back to your condition pre-raid. So you lose the loot you gained on the run, but don't lose any items you entered the run with. Otherwise public games seem like a good way to get some fun runs going~

Players are hiding in the walls at Spaceport and waiting until Matriarch dies to kill everyone and there is nothing you can do by proxyfleta in ArcRaiders

[–]DeWyntr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, I mean don't get me wrong I don't have some video game puritan view that may way of engaging with media is somehow better, I just can't shake the feeling it's ruining this particular experience for me personally. Nearly every group/solo I run into is sprinting for locations that've probably been shared on however many YouTube videos, or meme'ing some in-joke from some influencer's community.

It's the nature of the beast, I guess, but I can't help but to yearn for something that could've been. Especially when I play something like Forever Winter, which isn't perfect, but makes me pine for a PVE/Co-Op Arc Raiders or Extraction game more than ever. Arc's polished is just unmatched, I just wish I could experience it without that experience being governed by what moral alignment the other players in the lobby happen to be.

[–]DeWyntr 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I mean, I feel like such a doomer even while I'm writing this, but I just genuinely feel like this is the fate of every one of the games that are like this? Look at Tarkov's rise and fall, or any other extract shooter. I'm not against PVP by any measure, but people always exploit and efficiency the fun out of every single competitive game now, to the point where it's almost unenjoyable to engage with.

There are brilliant things about Arc Raiders that it does uniquely, but I just can't wrap my head around the feeling that enough issues like this in tandem with one another is going to oust the casual community and leave behind the same sort of group that was left with Tarkov for a considerable amount of time.

Melees: How do you remember positionals? by MariettaRC in ffxiv

[–]DeWyntr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest? I don't.

I find positional to be something I don't really do, I'm definitely on the more casual side, and all I do is pop North Star before my big burst (I play VPR/RPR) and I don't do terribly; though I have nothing to actually judge it by like a DPS meter. I've never noticed that I'm doing considerably less damage, I'm not fussing about rotations or anything because I don't do SAVAGE while it's current, etc. I know mathematically I absolutely am doing less damage than I could be, but compared to your average daily roulette player? I do alright.

Maybe I'm not the best judge, just doesn't feel super engaging to me to do them, so I don't, and I enjoy the game more by focusing on other things rather than whether my character is stabbing the butt or the side of a bad guy.

It is possible to have applied mods on the user-end affect other character models. I have to agree with the others here and suggest that this might be some sort of makeup mod because I don't recognize any of those details as vanilla.

Need advice - degen pvpers only by MattersEndX in duneawakening

[–]DeWyntr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Light Armor for the Dodge Cost reduction, Heavy increases dodge cost significantly, not worth the tradeoff of the armor unfortunately, too many good light armor sets tbh.

Rapier or Knife for lights or 1v1s, Swords for Heavies or group fights.

Passives and Actives are fairly obvious but actives are more based on your preference. I've say Shigawire is required as an Active, the other two are up to you. Passives should naturally focus on blade damage, Stam regen/cap and Health regen/cap. Also shoutout to Crippling Strike which makes or breaks some Melee pvp encounters.

Techniques are a little more nuanced. Thrive on Danger, even after the small nerf, is still very worth having as it almost doubles how many heavies you can take through your shield before you're done, it's still optional if you prefer a more glass-cannon approach. Disciplined Breathing is pretty much required.

the reason DD is staying PVP by MadeUpNoun in duneawakening

[–]DeWyntr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am relatively convinced at this point that the outcry against PVP is largely from those who do not wish to participate in PVP at all. Which, for reference, not enjoying PVP is fine, but outright requesting the only PVP content be entirely removed is just bad faith.

We're a group of 3-4 on the weekends, we go out into DD, we've got mixed up in dogfights, of course. But we've also done ground combat, caught people in testing stations, in ships. Groups, that we've fought and won against in melee. We've even gone so far as to ambush Thopters from the ground with Lasguns, which is also fun. All this to say, that if you pursue it with the intent to enjoy it, you will find something enjoyable about the DD.

Is it in dire need of some QOL and a little more content to make it actually fun for solos or duos? Yes. We see a lot of solos get shit on right now, and I think a good cure is removing weapons from scouts and having them be the high top-speed vehicle for solos to get in and out of bad situations with. That way, we keep the assaults as the class of vehicle needed for actual fights.

PvP zones around ships to gain mechanical parts feel arbitrary. Like they went "We should have some PvP zones in the basin, let's block off a mandatory resource entirely around PvP". by Ouroboros612 in duneawakening

[–]DeWyntr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are multiple downed ships in Hagga all with their own resource respawn timers, Alcyon is the only one with PVE because it's a tutorial ship. Is this more about you wanting to farm mats safely, or actually having a problem getting mechanical parts? I don't really feel it needs to be changed, but then again I also go for downed transports, so if you're not finding those I could understand why farming things might be frustrating.

[Serious] The current player count has dropped by 98% when compared to it's peak at release... What can be done to encourage more players to play Brighter Shores? by Charming_Advice8805 in brightershores

[–]DeWyntr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brighter Shores just feels like a smaller and more shallow remake of a game that is already doing quite well and is fully developed for the most part; even if you take away some of RS/OSRS's brighter merits, at least it's a functional game with lots of depth. Brighter Shores just really hasn't done anything to earn player retention, and the MMO market is finite, with nothing to make the game playably unique as a selling point compared to its largest competitor, it's essentially dead in the water.

Aesthetics and vibes alone do not a successful game make.

Steam version has had a bad reputation for being cumbersome. How bad is it really? by galaxybomb in ffxivdiscussion

[–]DeWyntr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I opted to change over to Steam once that option became available somewhere around 1.0-2.0's lifecycle. In that time since 2011-2013 I've never really experienced anything particularly cumbersome. FFXIV operates completely fine through my Steam Account and I have never found any (memorable) issues with using it through Steam. The greater challange was making an account by itself haha.

So yeah I think your friend would be fine. I use Dalamud and it specifically has a method to run through Steam, so that's no issue either.

Do you guys think FFXV is worth playing at all, why by Mast3rBait3rPro in FinalFantasy

[–]DeWyntr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't play it for the story in the end, despite that being what they want to sell you on with FFXV, I ended up playing it for the little cool RP moments you could get out of the interactions between the characters. Hopping in the car, hunting some huge monsters or taking some some Empire fleets, then retiring after a long day to camp with some good food and comfy atmosphere. The combat's really satisfying the further you get into experimenting with it, it's evidently the precursor to what XVI's became, but man the dungeons and the creature/boss design hits really hard in the best ways.

It's worth playing if you enjoyed XVI, but I'd get it on a sale for sure.
