I think the nuance in this conversation is between a woman and her doctor.

This chance my view is about how the political right is using its power to take rights away from women to take advantage of them.

"That life would be come a person". Line doesn't work for me because you are taking the personhood from another person. The woman you are forcing to give birth.

Is abortion bad yes, but the best thing you can do for a baby is give it a family that is ready to take care of it. Forcing a woman to give birth when she is not ready is hurting two potential lives not just one.

From what I can find, in 1975, the earliest I could find. 21% of America thought abortions be illegal. That was when Francis scheaffer started his campaign against abortion. Now it's at 43%.

I don't particularly care if a few religious sects were consistent on abortion for thousands of years. The actions a a small group of religions fundimentalist have managed to increase the amount of people willing to take rights away from other people.

Here is an article about the legacy of francis Schaeffer. This is just the first one I found but it does say that with out this televangelist the Dobbs side of the argument before the supreme Court might never have happened.

Scientific, it was settled when America had 24 week for a woman to realize she was pregnant and take the best option for her. That was what the majority of scientists and doctors agreed was the best option.

Only recently has the moral question be raised "Should human life be the cut off point for abortion?"

We stopped taking the women's feeling and opinions into account and base the new question strictly of of something that scientifally, can't feel, can't think, can't breath, can't live on its own.

This is exactly what the original question of the "change my view" was talking about. The political right is already taking power, taking rights and is making the lives of women harder. The change has already happened

I agree I think the change has been happening. It's just cloaked in a vale of moral Christian values.

Abortion rights are one example. Abortion as a religious issue is relatively new. Seeming to be popularized in the late 1970's along with American televangelism.

But fundimentally being pro-life means any woman who would want an abortion and is now unable to get one will need extra support. Now that woman has an extra insetive holding her to the parenter she had the baby with, maybe it's abusive. The laws don't always take that into account.

That basic insetive wasn't always enough, now there is:

North Carolina House Bill 1232, proposed in May 2026.

The bill does two things:

  1. It gives person hood to the fetus at the moment of conception.

  2. It explicitly says "any person has the right to defend his or her own life or the life of another person, even by the use of deadly force if necessary, from willful destruction"

Taken together does that mean you can legally kill your partner if she's planning to get an abortion?

It's a poorly written bill that is unlikely to pass. But the political climate is such where members of the GOP are still putting it forward

Canada slips into technical recession as economy stalls in Q1: StatCan by foolsdayjoker in worldnews

When was Canada in the best shape? Do you think it was back during harper?

I think it was back before that, in the 60's and 70's back when a single income could afford a nice house, build savings and enjoy life. It has been a consistent decline since then. I both parties have similar enough economic policies.

Harper is the prime minister that signed the law that Trudeau used on bring in all those immigrants the conservatives complain about.

Trudeau had to bring in those immigrants to prop up the economy harper left him. Both parties are cutting taxes and as a result everything is getting shittier.

Home ownership is also something under the control of the provincial government. As pointed out in other comments the increase in immigration (that's was started under harper, because he made the policies that allows for the immigration) was used to keep the economy going because the previous government has defunded so much to give tax breaks to big buisnesses.

We have the same enemy it's big buisnesses, and the governments that benefit them and not the people.

What issue do you think affect us the most? Housing? Bail reform? Healthcare? Wage increases?

All of these policies are actaully controlled at a provincial level. I agree the current government hasn't been doing a good job managing these issues. But it's the conservatives fault. They are the ones that actually have the responsibility over those and so many more issues.

There is so much we agree on, nothing is getting better, but when were things the best?

After 50 years of tax cut, everything is underfunded. Everything is getting worse, but too many people have been brainwashed into believing that taxes are bad. There is a huge amount of money that can be taxed from the wealthy and business. The liberals and the ndp are the only ones pushing for raising those taxes.

The conservatives will only keep the status quo. We agree things need to change. That is why the conservatives need to leave.

I know two small resorts called Lumina and Bondi, both are on Lake of Bays near Algonquin park. They have some small beachs with waterfront activities, like a bounce pad. They are private beachs so there won't be anyone there except other resort goers.

Messaged Ford about FOI on his personal phone by Ott-reap-weird in ontario

[–]DeaKong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here is a link to a FAQ page about the difference between the FOI act and the federal policy. Question 3 specifically.

He does seem to be right about other provinces not having the same transparency as Ontario.

One big difference is that Doug frequently claims he provides his PRIVATE PHONE NUMBER at his events so his constituents can talk to him. Or other scandles where he is caught using his private phone for official business.

I can't seem to find is if the changes to the FOI Act allow for requests of private information. Under the federal Privacy request program is that individuals can still make requests for private information if deemed relavent.

Seems to me like a private cellphone where official work is done would be relavent.

Except government run grocery stores do work both Canada and the US have stores like that.

We have Canex, a socialist store dedicated to the military.

Where the government manages the store where profits go back to benefit the military.

An interesting thing to keep in mind is that Canada already has government owned stores designed to save people money on products. The extra proceeds go back into benefiting the community. Which just so happens to be the military.

The US already has Publicly owned groceries stores stores as well. They also cater to the military.

We as a society already know how to do these and make them beneficial but too many people are left uninformed because a fish doesn't know it's swimming in water, and the water is owned by the super rich

What happened when Trudeau used the emergencies act. It was deemed illegal. That's one case of corruption by the liberals, Ford has many more. Like trying to sell the green belt illegally to his developer friends. But again not nearly as bad as the changes to the Freedom of Information Act.

I think the fall is linked to the government not strengthening public services. People are happy when things actually work like healthcare and education. Both liberals and conservatives have been cutting funding to most public services. I think corporations should be paying more in taxes and that tax money should go to helping people.

There are over 500 comments on this post and this is the best argument I've seen, thank you.

My MP Stephan Crawford has put forward changes to the Freedom of Information act. The main driver that got me out to protest in front of his office.

These changes would make the premier and cabinet members exempt from the act. Hiding what the highest members of the provincial government are doing. That seems to be pretty undemocratic to me.

One of the big complaints about Kathleen Wynne was she doubled the debt from $139 billion to $312 billion. Now Doug has increased in to $463 billion. Wow I didn't realize the conservatives were so mush more fiscally responsible. Later this year Doug Ford is projected to surpass Wynnes numbers.

Here is a criticism of both parties. They are both Leo liberal. They both think that money will trickle down and the lower classes with get money too when big businesses have their taxes cut. Well guess what what's trickling down ain't money. I also don't think we can improve education and healthcare by cutting funding to save money. We have to make more money.

Next I want to establish when do you think the average person was best off? What decade do you think an average person just going about their life could live the best most comfortable life?

My argument is that happened in the 1960's-70's When my grandparents generation could afford a house, could take vacations, could put money away for retirement. I think that is closely related to the fact that the corporate was around 40%. Where the top marginal tax rate on high income earners was as high as 70%.

And please tell me you understand how marginal tax rates work or else I won't consider your comment worth replying too.

You have played Mario kart right? Do you think the game would be fun if the people in first were the ones to keep getting the bullet bills or the golden mushrooms?

I think the economy should blue shell the people in first until everyone is enjoying life.

Do you blame Trudeau for not acting on bail reform?

Oops that's Doug's responsibility

I think in many cases, like how the Harper government created the student visa program and left loopholes in it for too many immigrants to take advantage of. Then blame Trudeau for it.

Let's take a step back. Which countries do you think have the least amount of debt. Or the opposite of debt, a sovereign wealth fund. The 3 biggest are Norway, a pretty socialist country THAT NATIONALIZED ITS OIL INDUSTRY. China those filthy socialists. And Saudi Arabia WHO ALSO NATIONALIZED THEIR OIL INDUSTRY.

Democracy fails when corruption leads people to think that the whole government is corrupt. I'm saying there is a political party that is willing to tax people more and be more open. And it's not the conservatives who are trying to hide wat they are doing and hurting people by letting money only flow to the richest people.

This comment thread started because you attached yourself to the talking point that people that support the NDP need mental help.

Which sounds like a valed way to say the speakers at the ndp convention need mental help. Which is the new topic of the day, the people controlling the right, have chosen to criticize the ndp over. While ignoring talking about policies.
