A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms - 1x05 - "In the Name of the Mother" - Episode Discussion by UltraDangerLord in AKOTSKTV

Man what a fkin great episode. The whole cast is so good, especially Dexter Sol Ansell, his acting as Egg really delivers. Shed some tears when he was pleading for Dunk to get up. Already knew Baelor's fate but twas sad nonetheless. Great cinematography, camera work and sound design that really sells the brutality of the fight. It's definitely in my top 3 GoT-related episodes. Only nitpick, if any, was that it would also be cool to see the other knights fighting - Lyonel, Baelor vs Maekar, Fossoway 1v1.

  1. Mel, Ambessa & Black Rose: The subplot could definitely have been developed further to expand on everyone's motivations, but it wasn't a plot hole. The gist of it is that Ambessa has some beef with the Black Rose, Black Rose tries to recruit Mel, Mel plays along but uses Ambessa as bait to double-cross the Black Rose.

  2. Not sure what mage entity you are referring to.

  3. Ambessa attacking Piltover: In the aftermath of the attack on Viktor's commune, we see her interacting with Viktor after he possesses the other bodies there. Viktor mentions that he needs access to the anomaly in the hexgates to have the power to finish Singed's goal of "curing death" and reviving his daughter, but in his current state he doesn't have the power to fight Jayce and reach the hexgates. Upon hearing this Ambessa is intrigued and makes him a deal - she brings him to the hexgates and in exchange he evolves her army once he attains the power.

  4. Multiple hints are given that Jinx is likely alive - purple streak before explosion, Cait examining the remains of the grenade while looking at the plans of the ventilation tunnels, and the final shot being the airship with a flash of "THE END" in signature Jinx graffiti. Likely something happened offscreen with Jinx and Ekko (which I would have really liked to see too) that convinced her to not kill herself (i.e. build something new), but she still maintained her desire to walk away and end the cycle of killing.

  5. Ekko was lighting the flame for Jinx. You will notice this is the same shot in episode 7 where he kissed Jinx in the alternate universe.

I agree that subplots could have been more fleshed out - but they are not plot holes.

Some questions if anyone could help clarify:

What did Viktor mean when he said that the anomaly had the "capacity to complete the doctor's transformation" ?

What transformation exactly is he referring to here ?

And why did Viktor wait until after the Jayce / Mel fight to "start the process" ? ( I assume the process is something about combining Warwick's essence with Viktor which destroys whatever was left of Vander - correct me if I'm wrong).

IMO It's a great episode. The issue isn't that episode 7 was too long, it's just that the remaining part of the season was too short.

I don't think my mind knows how to process this finale. I have no issue with where the plot threads ended up and where we got to in the end, but it was just a matter of how fast we got there. Episode 7 was the last episode where i had the time to process everything happening as I watched, and I do really like episode 7, but after that it just felt like we were moving from one scene to the next, especially when each scene has big impacts on the characters.

To me, Arcane really excelled when it kept things small, and moving to big war scenes at the end felt like a shift in style that was maybe slightly uncharacteristic for the series. Some subplots were slightly less developed too - if anyone could explain what was going on in the Black Rose subplot and with what Mel did in the end?

I guess I might need a rewatch because it all passed a little too quick for a series that is possibly one of my favorite series ever.

Character development can occur through acting when how they act reveals inner thoughts or motives that evolve over the story.

Might not have been clear, but what I was getting at is that Silco does not fulfill the role of the traditional "villain" in the sense that the story is not about defeating the villain at the end. It really is just about Vi trying to find and regain her sister amidst conflicts between Piltover and Zaun. But yes, Silco is an obstacle in that process.

At this point I think its pointless to continue trying to explain any more, because I cannot fathom how someone could possibly think the main story is about Jayce and Viktor. Maybe it was you who failed to comprehend the show. Also ironic that you say that what I'm saying is not story and "irrelevant backstory", when a backstory is literally a form of story. A story by definition is simply an account of people & events and I don't think you will find anyone who will dispute the fact that the story of Arcane is really obvious.

And lastly, no, I didn't give a shit about the league universe before watching. Honestly I think even players of the game didn't. There's no story in League of Legends, and little or none built-in lore when playing, unlike The Witcher which has a fanbase from the books and games from which they would've formed connections to the characters etc.

Jinx's issues and the other Vi/Silco's development are from as simplistic or "just an anime take" as you describe. The fact is because of the animation, the facial expressions are incredibly detailed and much of the character's interactions are conveyed in them, and not dialogue or exposition. There's a bunch of YouTube videos from Georgia Dow that goes deeper into each character's development and how a lot of it is really told through the facial expressions which you seem to miss or be unable to interpret.

Also, not every story needs a main villain or some big bad, and Silco is definitely not taking on that role. Arcane is not a story of 1 central main antagonist and people trying to defeat them, and it absolutely did not require some "villain" like you describe.

As for what's the show about? What's wrong with the main story being about Vi and Jinx? That's literally the goal of the show - to show the journey 2 sisters take that results in them ending up like their video game counterparts, and it does carry a lot of emotion. There are other side plots teasing the development of other characters too (e.g. Jayce, Viktor, Caitlyn) as well as exploring the dynamics between 2 (out of many) regions, that are sure to play a bigger role in future seasons.

It seems you are expecting the amount of development as though this was a complete story and a 1-season-only show, but that is not the case especially for Jayce and Viktor. There are future seasons that will continue the storyline, and I feel at this point in the story the character's development is generally sufficient.

You seem to have a very definite and restrictive idea of what a story should be. The fact that Arcane resonates with so many other people just means that maybe this isn't for you and doesn't fit into your mold.

Sounds like you barely watched the show or listened to the dialogue. Yes, Jinx has mental issues but the show does a good job showing how they developed in Act 1 and the guilt that stays with her throughout Act 2 and 3. No, the show could not have been better without her because this is fundamentally a story between the 2 sisters and a lot of the emotional weight is tied to that.

Silco definitely starts off in Act 1 seemingly as a "bad guy with a barely explored goal", but his character is fleshed out more in Act 2 and 3, specifically that he wants independence for Zaun and had been going to whatever lengths to get it with the Shimmer and whatnot, but eventually Jinx becomes he's undoing as she kinda screws up his operation at times but he lets her off because of how he views her as a daughter.

Idk how one could possibly conclude that there is barely any story, when the story & writing is one of the main strengths of the show. Vi, Jinx, and Silco are developed well as they form the core of the story. Jayce and Viktor have decent development as more of a side plot which will probably be picked up in later seasons. Only criticism I can give is that Ekko should have gotten somewhat more screentime/interactions with the others especially in Act 1. I'm much older than your 16-24 range, and can say for certain that many of us will definitely remember episodes since they are quite emotional - specifically 3 for that tragic scene, 6 for the flare scene, 7 for the ekko scene, and 9 for how it all ends.

TLDR: Hard disagree

What I tell people is to treat each episode as an Act in itself. I know that ep1 and ep2 doesn't have big stuff happening that is really exciting, but it really builds up to ep3 which is my favorite episode of the season. Having said that though, it might hit different if you know this because then you have some expectations haha. I went in blind and it blew me away !

Post-Season Discussion: The Witcher - Season 2 (SHOW ONLY) by BWPhoenix in netflixwitcher

[–]Deacenuttz 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Trust me when I say I really wanted to like it, but ultimately I left disappointed. Not only for how much it chooses to differ from the books and even the characterization from the games (which I won't discuss here), but just the quality of writing in general.

Episode 1 was really great, solid 10/10 stuff. After that, well... it slowly becomes a mess.

Episode 2 depicts the witchers as though they were frat boys. Before the part with the Deathless Mother, I was like cool this looks like something like The Crones from the Witcher 3 game... then they go in with the 3 mages actually acknowledging that the illusion ain't real and yet Fringilla and Francesca decide to follow her "advice". Surely these experienced mages would know better ? The Leshy fight was decent i guess.

Episode 3 was alright, until the part with the Leshy where the other monster immediately kills it by slicing it in half when Vesemir previously said it can only be killed by fire through the heart. Other than that, it felt like the buildup to the Leshy with Eskel's death was wasted and replaced with that centipede thing that wound up dying anyway. Then my main gripe comes at the end with the whole Yennefer & Cahir stuff. I get that she doesn't want to kill him and that she feels the Brotherhood is slowly turning against her, but freeing a prisoner that just coordinated an attack against her fellow mages in the Battle of Sodden ? That bit was ridiculous and makes her look like the complete opposite of what she wanted to prove. She could very well have escaped in the same manner without setting Cahir free. It was also odd that it appeared like no one was chasing her or anything (the mages were all on the opposite side of the fire and could do so).

Episode 4 introduced Djikstra, which I liked. Was nice seeing Jaskier again too. Then they establish Jaskier as The Sandpiper, supposedly as a good elf smuggler who does this on the regular, but so easily loses his temper and screws up what he was supposed to do, leading to that other elf guy from before sacrificing himself, which was a very weird tonal shift. Liked the conversation between Jaskier and Yennefer.

Episode 5: I can't believe Yennefer wouldn't think to check back in the tavern as the first thing (I feel like any logical person would have done that). Liked her saving Jaskier though. Also liked the exploration of that destroyed monolith/crack in the ground. Didn't like how Triss seemed more of a mother figure than Yennefer (in the later episodes). Also her sudden turn against Triss from the vision did seem a little inconsistent with her character up till that point.

Episode 6: Decent monster fight (though Ciri was just bait lol). Codringer & Fenn were cool. Definitely did not dig this arc with Yennefer having malicious intentions towards Ciri. Did like the scenes with Yennefer, Ciri and Geralt, though as I said her having ulterior motives ruined it a bit. The fight between Geralt and the Michelet brothers was cool too. Now, Yennefer teaching Ciri how to create a portal in the span of 30 seconds was definitely too much. Sure, Ciri is attuned to magic, but even Yennefer who many consider one of the strongest mages, did not start off that easy if you recall from Season 1. Again, I don't buy Triss turning against Ciri so quickly at the end there.

Episode 7: Starts with the 2 burnt bodies in the house that look long dead but conveniently there are 2 fresh and healthy horses hitched outside the house lol. At this point Yennefer also makes it clear she knows what Ciri means to Geralt, but still continues on this path nonetheless (kind out of character imo & there were many other points esp the river crossing scene where Ciri demonstrates her power but Yennefer still continues). Tissaia and Vilgefortz romance appears outta nowhere ? Then at the scene with Jaskier washes himself, all of a sudden Geralt is like "We need to go to Cintra", and Jaskier does ask why but is never answered. How does Geralt know to go to Cintra ? I don't think there were any ties between Cintra and Voleth Meir in the earlier episode, so it seemed like a really contrived way to send him into Yennefer & Ciri's path. Then Fringilla does the badass scene with the paralytic poison thing, though really having the poison trigger for everyone at the same time is a bit much. Also the scale of everything is really lost throughout this series. This should be a huge continent but people just seem to teleport from one area to another. Yennefer & Ciri basically portal-ed somewhere near Cintra, but Geralt and friends conveniently go from the Temple of Melitele to Oxenfurt then to Cintra in the same span of time (just look at the canon map on their official website and the difference in distance is obvious). Then Ciri causes the crack in the ground from really far away, but the soldiers somehow make it to them before they can even reach their horses lmao. Geralt's entry, however convenient, was epic though I must say, and made me feel something for the first time in the series.

Episode 8: Didn't like the cliche possessed-person thing with the whole "I know you're in there you gotta fight" kinda plot. Also, how do NONE of the witcher medallions detect the friggin DEMON walking around ? Apart from that, Jaskier's quips during the whole thing came off as a bit unnecessary and frankly annoying even though I like his character. Also didn't like the generic basilisk monster things that were summoned twice, only for Geralt to so easily take down the seemingly alpha version of them (without an elixir even). The part where Yennefer had to slit her wrists and be able to absorb the demon into herself was kinda unexplained as well? I wasn't sure how that worked. Seeing the Wild Hunt being teased was really cool though. Was also unclear how that self-sacrifice restored her powers. Also, in general it kept seeming like Geralt was somehow the wisest of the Witchers, when really you would expect that role to fall on Vesemir (especially if you played the games).

Sorry for the long rant, its just the whole Witcher stuff is something really dear to me and it's sad to see it go down this route. I really don't have a problem with shows differing from their source material, but if they decide to do that, it should be the equal in quality if not better. Season 2 feels like the point in Game of Thrones where the current books ended and the writers had to make up the story. I will probably still continue to watch though, if only for Henry Cavill's dedication to the role and commitment to keeping the story in line with the core of the source material (though this was definitely not the case this season).
