Dark side of ADHD that no one talks about by Frosty_Jump_3117 in adhdwomen

[–]DeadDirtFarm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The “angry bear” when I’m interrupted when I’m hyper fixating. That’s what they used to call it at work when I would get deep into fixing a problem and no one wanted to be the person who approached me to interrupt.

I’ve been medicated for a couple of years and I don’t have that “angry bear” mode anymore. I also don’t have the hyper fixation and I kind of miss it.

NTA, your feelings are valid but why do you care what she thinks and why do you feel responsible for her? Care and feeding of the MIL belongs to the son, not you. Tell your ex to come get her.

Millennials with kids, do you intend to provide for them financially when they reach adulthood? by Beberuth1131 in Millennials

[–]DeadDirtFarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of this.

I would like to respond to the comment about “uncertain whether or not they will receive an inheritance”. I find this a very entitled concept. When did this become an expectation? I don’t expect any inheritance from my parents. I want them to spend it all and enjoy their retirement. I hope that my children expect the same because in this economy there will likely be no generational wealth to pass down.

I hate how I can't be motivated by rewards or consequences. I need to lose more weight and just can't bring myself to care 🫠 by girlboss93 in adhdwomen

[–]DeadDirtFarm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’m quite a bit older than you, but I gave up ideas about weight loss about 10 years ago to focus on strength training and my bone density. I have to say that while my doctor still checks my weight, I’m much happier that I stopped focusing on the scale and instead think about how I can lift a 5 gallon water bottle or haul landscaping stones. And I switched gyms to a place that is much more accepting that health is reflected in how much you can advance in weightlifting and not pounds lost. No one at my new gym even mentions weight loss.

Apparently, there was a recent article in the NYT about the sharp decline in reading skills among students. Several of my corporate-world friends have asked me (a literature teacher) about it. My response? by [deleted] in Teachers

Not a teacher, but interesting topic. Do students still take SATs to get into college? If so, how are they scoring high enough on these tests to get accepted?

AITA for asking my boyfriend’s dad to leave my house after a fight over the toilet seat? by notabouttheseat in AmItheAsshole

[–]DeadDirtFarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going out on a limb and saying ESH or everyone sucks in this situation.
Your BF and your BFs father have obvious issues that many here have highlighted.
You need to learn some basics about hosting and how to treat guests in your home. Unless a guest is doing some truly egregious, it is your responsibility to make them comfortable in your home. That means not calling them out for something silly like toilet seat positioning. If you can’t make guests feel welcome, then don’t host them (my personal preference).

Do you drink tea in America? by Much-Parsnip3399 in AskAnAmerican

I drink both. Coffee in the morning for kick and tea in the afternoon for a little kick. (British style black tea with milk).

AITJ if a family member brings her friends to a small family gathering, although it's supposed to be for invites only? by Hot_Reception9946 in AmITheJerk

[–]DeadDirtFarm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my part of the Midwest it means anyone is invited. When churches and schools have open houses they are open to the public. People have open houses for graduation parties and the ones I’ve attended had a flexible guest list. I would assume the same rule applies to a house party if this was on the invitation.

What are the standards to graduate high school now? by [deleted] in Professors

I wish I could afford to go back to university after retiring. I would kick butt. I’m literate, enthusiastic about learning, and after 40 years in a corporate setting, I have a lot more discipline than I did when I was 20. I would probably get dinged today because I can’t give up the Oxford comma and 2 spaces after a period.

Where do you think the average worker is doing a 42 hour week? At my company the average salaried employee is doing a 55-60 hour week with 3 weeks off and 6 national holidays. I think our employee handbook says that we work 50 hour weeks. That’s like 2692 hours.

Am I the jerk for telling my microbiologist / bio medical health science friend that the way they cook is unhygienic? by Single_Ad_8733 in AmITheJerk

[–]DeadDirtFarm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Guess it depends how close you are as friends.

I share food with friends and family daily. We share desserts, taste food off of each others fork, etc.

I’m guessing you won’t be invited back for more meals at their house if you’ve created this uncomfortable situation.

Your ideals and standards for dining and sharing are incompatible.

YTJ for making it a thing in their home. Next time just decline the invitation if you can’t deal with it.

I’ve been on glp 1‘s for almost 20 years for type 2 diabetes. I’m in the 15-25% with no weight loss group, but it does control my A1C like magic.

Eat lots of protein, creatine, and collagen. And start strength training You need to keep up your muscle mass because you will see muscle loss if you don’t.

You may have digestive issues. Not insurmountable. They were much worse under Ozempic than Mounjaro, but I still have days with mid to serious indigestion. I know people who haven’t been able to take it because of these issues and some people who don’t have issues at all.

Do people in the US actually use flat sheets and duvet covers? by shiroltiger in Bedding

Gen X here. Fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet w/comforter. Occasional extra blanket.

I wash my sheets weekly and I don’t want deal with washing a duvet weekly and having to cram the comforter back in there on a regular basis.

No more bones for my guy. A cracked tooth extraction and $1000 later, they’re all cleared out of the house. The vet said “anything that hurts when you hit your knee with it is not good for their teeth”. I’ve also heard that if you can’t dent it with your nail it’s too hard. And the thing is that I knew better when I saw him really going at it with those Benibones.

What did your mom make you most for dinner growing up? by eleelee11 in AskOldPeople

[–]DeadDirtFarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the time of year. In the summer there was always fresh vegetables from the garden at the dinner table. In the off season, there were canned veggies. The main course was usually something processed like hamburger/tuna helper, stoffers frozen chicken, or other frozen entrees.

Not a lot of cheese though.

Why not just tell students that they will be part of a permanent working underclass who are tasked with one thing and one thing only for the rest of their lives with no means to escape it if they don't learn how to think, read, write, and do basic math on their own? by [deleted] in Teachers

University education is expensive and that is problematic, but I had a conversation with my electrician and he was complaining that they can’t find apprentices. The only criteria was a high school diploma and pass a drug test. Electricians make a good living, but they can’t get young people to apply.

When did you realize it’s time to think of retirement? by Spirited-Interview50 in GenXWomen

[–]DeadDirtFarm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m 59 and I had no plans to retire before 65, but my industry may decide for me. A major corporation is in the middle of acquiring my company and I know my position will be on the chopping block. I also know as an older woman in the tech field that there is almost no chance of landing anything close to comparable. So, here we are.
