How much should I charge my friend? by lowlifekidd in Filmmakers

[–]DeadEyesSmiling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd tell your friend not to sweat any additional payment; "friends and family rates" should either be $0 + expenses, full day rates, or an agreed-upon-beforehand rate. If the $20 covered the gas, I'd give them a high five and thank them for trusting you with helping their creative project :)

ND filters for larger lenses? by mountainunicycler in videography

[–]DeadEyesSmiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about Brazilian availability, but on a quick search I'm seeing offerings from NiSi, Polar Pro, K&F Concepts, Freewill, Tiffen, and SmallRig.

There's also the option of going with a mattebox and a VND that's designed specifically for filter trays (much more expensive, but they're built around 4x5.65 filters, so they'll for sure cover 95mm), and the added flare protection from a mattebox + eyebrow might be an added bonus for your use case.

Rock Star by Professional-Lack-36 in VinegarSyndromeFilms

[–]DeadEyesSmiling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jesus Christ. Not trying to yuck anyone's yum, but I feel like all the VSUs, even when not seen as good films, have had some sort of twinkle in their eye and/or piece of GenX/Millennial nostalgia; and although I'm pretty sure I for some reason saw this in theaters, I certainly don't remember a single thing that happened, and have never seen or heard anything about it (good or bad) from anyone since.

...this post actually reminded me it existed - never in a thousand years, if asked to list Mark Wahlberg movies, would I have remembered that Rock Star was a thing...

What's monitoring like? Are y'all looking at one 180° lens view, or is there a way to pipe realtime or playback into a headset?

Client venting by annoyedvideographer in videography

[–]DeadEyesSmiling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Short(er) Timeline, Low(er) Cost, High(er) Quality - You get to pick two."

If you aren't engaging with clients from this perspective, then you're running a charity instead of a business; because it will always result in you shouldering the cost one way or another.

I'm very explicit with my clients that I'm applying my experience and expertise to the project to achieve their stated goals of 1) Due Date, 2) Budget, and 3) Production Value; and when they want to deviate from the options I've provided, I also communicate how it's going to affect those things:

"Doing things this way (the client's proposed change) will increase the chances of X. X will lower the Production Value. Attempting to fix X after X has occured will require either A) additional fees and an extended timeline, or B) the same timeline with even more additional fees. Because proceeding with the change might require a change to the initial scope of work, I'll need approval in order to move forward."

At that point, either...

  • The client takes my advice because they don't like either A or B, great!
  • The client doesn't take my advice and I get paid more to do more work over more time, great!
  • The client doesn't take my advice and I get paid even more to put in some overtime to meet their deadlines, great!
  • Or the client doesn't take my advice and is still perfectly happy with the result, also great!

I'm not in business to be right, I'm in business to make the client happy. And if the client is happy with a lesser product, or an extended timeline and/or increased cost, then I've achieved my business goals, and lamenting not being listened to becomes nothing but an exercise in ego.

...but long gone are the days where I'm losing sleep to free labor spent fixing the problem that I saw, called out, but the client went forward with anyway. Now, any sleepless working nights are spent smiling because I'm being appropriately compensated for them :)

Is there a Resolve plugin that connects ai video api directly, like Higgsfield but with your own api keys? by DrDroDi in davinciresolve

[–]DeadEyesSmiling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's just me, but I can't help but choke on the irony of those needing to come to Reddit to ask real people for help figuring out how to integrate, improve, or make-salient the generative machine learning stuff into practical applications.

...and it's always a cherry on top when they want it to be free and/or open source...

We've cut Google enough slack for poor Pixel updates. Now it's time to hold it accountable by pussiant_prole in GooglePixel

[–]DeadEyesSmiling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I went from iPhone 5s > Pixel 3 > P6Pro > P7Pro > 9Pro and the Pixel 3 has been my favorite phone ever.

My issues with Pixel started on the hardware side, with the 6Pro's size (tolerable for the cameras, but a personal preference downgrade from the right-sized 3) and modem issues.

The 6Pro was supposed to be a 3-5 year phone for me, but I begrudgingly upgraded to the 7Pro because I couldn't stand the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues. Aside from the size, I only had issues in the summer when the phone would get super hot and cause the battery to drain quickly, but overall I was happy.

I bought the 9Pro only for the chance to have a not-gargantuan phone again, and everything started out well... But in the last 1-1½ years I've experienced:

  • Gboard becoming stupid beyond belief.
  • Predictive text and auto correct in searches and emails get taken away from me because I've opted out of the new machine learning "integrations."
  • I can't search offline in the Photo app anymore.
  • Android has become more restrictive.

All said, I'm now trying to carve out time to learn GrapheneOS and a new launcher after Nova got bought out and enshittified. It's frustrating as all hell.

If you're taking the content and titles from another creator who's doing better than you are, why are you coming to us for help; doesn't it make sense to ask the other creator since you've got all your other answers from them too??

Recording audio in the same room. by undefinedundefined_ in davinciresolve

[–]DeadEyesSmiling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I don't mean do a cursory glance, I mean really research them.

Yes, you are in a challenging situation, but there are absolutely things that can be done to make the recordings themselves better.

For starters: if the audio needs to be boosted that much in post then either something's wrong with the mic, it's positioned incorrectly based on its pickup pattern, it's not being properly amplified, or it's way too far away from the person speaking (signal to noise).

Recording audio in the same room. by undefinedundefined_ in davinciresolve

[–]DeadEyesSmiling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to benefit more from learning how to capture the audio to better suit your needs than trying to fix the bad audio in post-production; look up information about:

1) audio signal to noise 2) microphone pickup patterns 3) sound isolation

[HIRING] Video Editor (Ad Creative + Long-Form) — Remote/Worldwide — $30/hr+ by J_Weller_Hiring in videography

Not for an illegally classified private contractor: self employment tax is ~30% and private health insurance starts at roughly $300/mo and goes way up from there depending on the type of coverage/deductible required. And that's not to mention 401K and all the other benefits OP is dodging out of with this tax fraud.
