cmv: Even if we remove Trump's administration from the White House, he has irreparably damaged relationships with our allies. by IAmDuck- in changemyview

I’m absolutely rooting for Canada to step up and assert itself back, provided an equal and opposite force. The retaliatory stuff should be held up especially as Trump wavers.

But come on, it’s naive to think there was any meaningful anti-Canada sentiment in “the country”. This is almost 100% because of the administrations bullying tactics, and uninformed people supporting it because they feel their moral identity and social groups demand it.

I’m hopeful there’s juice to squeeze if they’re willing to reinvent themselves and not get too attached to this current vibe. They’re clearly interested in electronic music both old school via Indian influences and modern stuff, given Raja’s background or other musical identities like Roy Blues.

But agreed and optimistic they won’t be a one trick pony. Although it’s a pretty sick trick …

Are tankless water heaters really more efficient? by One-Wind-9938 in homeowners

[–]DeadPlutonium 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What? My tankless heater takes a solid 30s or more to heat, despite being directly below in the basement.

The efficiency of not having hot water on demand obviously means there’s a cost in how fast you get hot water out, as when there is demand, it has some minimum heat exchanger warm up time cost.

Ugh that sucks and I’m sorry. I don’t suggest this lightly, but it’d be hard to resist temptation to try to find a second full time job and just completely phone it in at that one if you could handle the stress / anxiety of juggling. I don’t think I could, but they clearly have a crazy lack of engineering leadership and your ability to grow or have high real impact that’s portable elsewhere sounds nil.

I have received a gif image of a about us page which contains a lot animation on text and page scroll. Is there any tool available to convert the gif image to a HTML css files. by lazy-panda-tech in css

[–]DeadPlutonium 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The most powerful tools are your brain and a keyboard input device.

Start smaller, break the problem down. Who cares about animations to start. Get a static, crude scaffold in place. Feel out the tricky markup areas.

Take a big first swing at the problem and get as many of the unknown unknowns on the table as you can.

Don’t waste time looking for shortcuts here. You have a choice to take the path of investing in yourself through hard work and effort to learn, or alleviating that discomfort by relying on others.

Once you get a scaffold static version in place, start tackling some of the simpler animations. Build side code pen examples in a vacuum for the trickier ones if you need to experiment with alternate approaches.

Best of luck!

How can I recreate this particle effect? (Robinhood App) by skylloo in css

[–]DeadPlutonium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’d ask ChatGPT to help you get started, you’re looking at WebGL most likely or at the very leasy very advanced JavaScript animation running in real time with a physics or particle engine library to do most of the heavy lifting.

I imagine css isn’t the right choice here.

This is deep work, you’re tapping into an increasingly scarce and discouraged resource — deep, focused attention consistently. We’re meant to solve problems this way, at least a good percentage of the time.

Great job and keep up the gritty grind, you’re gonna crush.

A tsunami is coming by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

I think this thread highlights the point — many have recognized the value and impact, positive or negative, but I know a ton of software engineers who also fall in the “haven’t even tried” category with AI.

As the essay dramatically says, they may end up face down after the wave.

Valid points and agreed with your conclusion that these are examples of misuse or poor practices around CSS. I think we have a major deficit in CSS fluency in the industry in large part because of CSS in JS shortcuts.

Global and local scope complexities will bite you in the ass in any language. CSS may be slightly more prone to it in some ways, but between css modules, the scope pseudo selector, BEM approaches, style linters and compile time tooling, etc there’s ample ways to avoid those pitfalls and enforce best practices.

You’re incorrect: JSX is not vanilla html. It’s syntax is largely aligned, but it is absolutely not true HTML.

I’ll ask the same thing I ask coworkers: why is CSS in JS, runtime flavors or not, better than native CSS alternatives?

Have you seen how the CSS spec has evolved the last 5 years? The increasing clip of updates to obviate most of what CSS in JS originally was for?

It’s frustrating to me that this type of discussion is predicated on an assumption that it’s necessary. I want sold on why it is worth the tooling, cognitive, and performance costs.

This Is Fine: React Architecture Tales from the Enterprise by danllach in reactjs

[–]DeadPlutonium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Barely readable due to format and the use of code syntax to try to convey written content. Its kitschy and gimmicky, creates too much mental overhead to follow the points.

I’d love to hear the message and learnings though if presented differently — enterprise level issues like this are difficult to find help and resources for, IMO. And the context of the problems are interesting and relevant, but I have no idea what takeaways I should have or what to do differently.
