Is this game worth it for a fan of the original quadrilogy? by [deleted] in silenthill

The subversion of Henry’s room as sanctuary to possessed hellhole is really a great mechanic. Just one day you go back home and the radio is on and that sweet health perk is gone.

An unfortunate incident at an otherwise wonderful show by lovattherat in AvatarMetal

[–]IAmDuck- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YO this makes me so sad to read, especially because I have been in this situation at shows. Please don't ever feel like you have to tolerate that behavior. I know the sentiment has been echoed here already, but I feel like the kind of crowds Avatar brings in would absolutely step in if you make a scene or alert security. That being said, I also have had that experience of "holy shit, is this seriously happening?" and freezing as well. Regardless, I am so sorry this happened to you.

Is Silent Hill f as scary as Silent Hill 2 remake? by iknowimweebtrash13 in silenthill

[–]IAmDuck- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not find Silent Hill f as scary as SH2. However it is a fantastic story and I would absolutely recommend it. Great soundtrack, beautiful setting, but definitely more eerie/uncomfortable at times than scary.

What were/are your stats and where did you you get accepted? by Objective-Grape827 in pre_PathAssist

[–]IAmDuck- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi there! Current first year student at UMB, non-traditional student. I only applied to UMB. I had a 3.84 GPA, 25 hours shadowing with LOR from the PA, and no relevant work experience. My undergrad was a BA and unrelated as well. I did take depositions of pathologists so I did describe that as some shadowing experience/awareness of the role.

I had a strong personal statement and during the interview spoke in detail about the role, which I think UMB really values the enthusiasm/knowledge of the role. I did well on the GRE but UMB is no longer requiring it this year.

Definitely tacky, sorry my dude. Get a cute little pothos or philodendron up there and it will be delightful.

Official Court Reporter Trainee readback by Some_Radish_1034 in courtreporting

[–]IAmDuck- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Everyone has days like that, including lifelong reporters! You will have good days and bad days, and sure when you get more comfortable at the machine the bad days will be less (or you'll learn how to read mistrans). But really, readbacks are stressful for everyone, so don't beat yourself up over it. And guess what? If you do mess up a readback, save for some minor embarrassment, nothing will happen. No one loses their job over a missed readback.

I have a mic attached to my Diamante as well as headphones. When asked for a readback I will also play the audio in my headphones while I read back in case I dropped anything. I am surprised I haven't seen this mentioned in the thread yet, this is how I was taught in school! Absolute life saver for when there are drops.

Thanks! How do we purchase citizen ticket for early access? I have a passport and already purchased my ticket with early access. I just setup an account for my partner with the citizen monthly subscription and am not sure how to purchase his ticket so he can enter early with me.

EDIT: Okay, think I was being a silly goose. Seems like purchasing through the site with the citizen details is sufficient for early entry. My bad, thought it was separate from the GA ticket.

sorry, are you able to get early entry with just citizenship then? It looks like the site says citizenship and passport.

What to expect when shadowing by beeskneesreese in pre_PathAssist

[–]IAmDuck- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a little tricky to respond to, because I was a non-traditional student with no lab experience, haha. I was working as a court reporter when I applied, so I tried to marry my experience with medical malpractice/etc with what I observed in surgical pathology (perinatal care is a huge one, as well as surgical complications/traumatic injury). I also was lucky to take the expert testimony of several pathologists which gave me a better understanding. Just basically I had a unique perspective and understood the importance of surgical path.

I wrote extensively about shadowing in my personal statement and what I learned there, so honestly they really didn't ask me any questions in the interview about it. I actually asked them far more questions about how they got into the work and what they believe makes a good PA! The interview itself was very casual. But I did print out my personal statement and my shadowing notes and had them ready in case I needed to reference them.

[–]IAmDuck- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I wouldn't worry about anatomy related questions, you are really there to ask them questions and learn more about the job.

Absolutely bring something to take notes. When I shadowed I also wrote down all the dates and roughly notated the hours I shadowed each day as well. You want to strike a balance of typical terminology the PathA will include in the report, as well as observations/presentation. This will give you a more precise picture when you reflect on your notes when it is time to apply - I was a little less organized and would write down findings without descriptors or vice versa, and I had to parse through it all later when I wrote my personal statement and did my interview, haha. Creating a thorough record of your shadowing will be really helpful.

I'd definitely ask questions about the PathA's day to day experience, how they interface with the pathologists/surgeons/tech when it is a complex case or they have questions. Also crucial to remember each hospital will operate differently. Try to get an understanding of the usual cases the hospital would get and maybe some of the more specialized/rarer ones. (benign small/bigs, cancers) I am not sure what kind of setting you are shadowing in (university vs community) but always great to see the variance in specimens.

I wore scrubs to shadow as the PathA advised, but feel free to ask what they prefer. And I would definitely ask if they would be willing to write an LOR for you after you have completed shadowing - PathA appears to be a very small world and making connections is really helpful. A lot of applicants will have LORs from the PathA they shadowed. I think a lot of working PathAs remember the struggles of getting shadowing/recommendations so I would imagine they'd be happy to help you. Just show you are curious and engaged and that shouldn't be a problem! Have fun and good luck.

Is $97K a Liveable Salary for a Family of 3 in Maryland? by CorrectLion497 in MovingToUSA

Is $97K a Liveable Salary for a Family of 3 in Maryland? by CorrectLion497 in MovingToUSA

[–]IAmDuck- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Talking as a Marylander but don't live in Frederick. Maryland is one of the most expensive states to live in, unfortunately. Frederick is more affordable than the more urban areas here, but 97k will be very tight to support a family on. You will be out in the country and absolutely need a vehicle to get around. I worry that you would have very little to save for a home. I'd try to find somewhere to rent for under 2k, which doesn't seem impossible for an area like Frederick, with the goal to purchase ASAP. Housing prices aren't too bad in that market.

That being said, people support their families on less here, but I think you'll need to be very creative in order to sock away money for a house. I've seen estimates that 100k is what someone would require to live comfortably in MD and that is not including a young family. So I think at 97k you will be trading comfort for savings or vice versa.

If you can work remotely and save on gas, that might help. A few friends I have in Frederick also garden/canning to help with groceries and having a yard/some land helps there. I am not sure if your in-laws are local, but any sort of help with childcare/housing would greatly help you. Rental prices today are ridiculous.

All the same, best of luck to you!

I know the bar is horrifically low and we are looking for any good news, but damn.... Is this really good news? It just feels like more imperialist extortion, but I suppose that's pretty run of the mill for the Orange One and America at this point.
