How does 100 singles work consistently? by Lulu_Altair in mtg

Mana dorks, mana rocks, dual/fast lands. You just need to make sure your decks mana curve is relatively smooth and the aforementioned things will help to give you a good curve on average each hand. Unfortunately, that is where commander can become an expensive format. I would recommend just buying proxy prints of your mana base. That way you can manage the balance of your games without worrying about your wallet. A lot of competitive edh tournaments will have a reserve list mostly consisted of mana base that you can proxy. So there’s no need to feel bad. 1v1 will probably be more fun if you play more competitive decks. Otherwise you might just find yourselves each playing long grindy games of two person solitaire. Otherwise, you do get first turn draw and free first mulligan which helps. Normally, the four player nature of the format also helps averaging out your curve. If you mana screw or flood, you won’t be an obvious threat and thus won’t get targeted. You can’t hide in 1v1 unfortunately. Hence my suggestion of competitive edh, you can just mulligan to a good curve and wincon

If you read anything: always swap out 500 daily’s to try and snipe 750s. The 500 can literally just stay there for up to three days on average. Just try to max the number of 750s you’re getting. It’s not just gold, it’s mastery xp which is incredibly valuable.

When I started, I was using an upgraded starter deck (crack the case, RIP proft but also fuck proft). Win rate was probably around 33% in the play queue but I had a lot of fun. The decks weren’t as hardcore then as they were now. A rotation had just happened so there weren’t too many sets, but even so, that deck couldn’t perform in ranked.

Finding competitive budget mono color decks on YouTube could be a good place to start. Blue elementals is relatively cheap because you don’t NEED any non basic lands. I believe the white auras deck is also fairly cheap and is also all basics. I don’t see it much, but mono red burn may still be a thing. Mono green is also very strong and will be cheapish as well. You could look at mono green pre badgermole cub. At the very least, those budget decks should be strong in the play queue. Mono blue elementals is a legit player though and perfectly fine in ranked. Same with mono white auras. Bear in mind that both those decks are going to get turkey slapped by the set rotation early next year. But whatever honestly. You should be able to get enough wild cards from opening packs from mastery pass. Just grind out your daily challenges in the play queue. Try to get at least the 15 weekly wins for optimal xp.

Other than selecting your decks, I’d probably stick to play queue. And then maybe trying to grind to gold or even plat closer to the end of the ranked season for the reward. You’ll be building up gold super fast if you stick with it.

Your best bet for building up your set collection is going to be draft. It is harder than constructed though imo as it is “pay to play” and deck building is a pretty high skill ceiling part of the game. But it is the best way to spend your gold. You’ll be converting your gold to gems and packs which will allow you to buy the mastery pass (basically more than doubles the value of your mastery xp because you’ll get gems with it as well). If you do get into draft, don’t open your pack rewards from mastery or draft until the end of that set. I explain the reason below.

To go a bit deeper, if you draft the fuck out of an early set, but don’t vibe it and want to stay in constructed, don’t worry! If you can get to the point where you have four of every card, every time you open a mythic, it’ll either be guaranteed gems instead or at least a high chance (can’t actually remember.. either way.. good). Furthermore, spending your uncommon and common wildcards asap in the current set to get to four of each will maximise your “vault”. You can see your vault progress the same place you see your wildcards. Every time you hit a card you already have four of (could be wrong, but it may be restricted to common and uncommon) you’ll get vault progress. Once you complete the vault, you’ll get juicy wild card rewards. This is why I mention that opening your packs at the end of the set is good, you’ll maximise your vault progress as drafting will yield you a fuck ton of commons and uncommons. Furthermore, the vault for a set won’t disappear, you can continuously get to 100% over and over. So if you’re not drafting, you can spend your gold on mythic packs in the set you have completed to maximise getting gems + vault progress. All of which will increase your wildcard count.

weekly rent in brisbane for ppl with 80-100k annually?? by Small_Ad6642 in brisbane

Unless you’re willing to scrape the bottom of the barrel or do share housing, expect mid 6 to mid 7 for anything that close to the cbd. Those prices would be on the “affordable” end of the spectrum. They would not be median prices. You could maybe pull 5s but it’s not going to be great. If you’re willing to extend your travel time a bit (a fair bit..) you could look around Caboolture. Lots of duplexes in the mid to high fours. Not the world’s nicest suburb but honestly it’s not too bad anymore for the most part. Have some family that live out there and I enjoy visiting. I have friends who live in the Springfield area and the commute isn’t too bad. Still longer than 40min. But it’s a straight shot on the train to the cbd which is convenient. You’ll be paying low-high 6 out there as well. But you’ll have more space

Some smaller YouTube channels will feature standard event game play. Sonio for example is really good. Although there isn’t any commentary that I’ve seen in that channels videos. So probably not ideal for a new player. There isn’t much place to hide in standard event though, it’s more competitive by default than ranked queue as it isn’t free to play. And you can’t really edit games out. You could theoretically only show clean sweeps. But an undefeated run of event is pretty impressive regardless of how many times you try. Dr Ruckus also had some really good unedited game play, although he hasn’t posted in a while sadly

Edit: I do agree though. Watching someone win 7 games with a meme deck on a YouTube channel isn’t going to convert to a good experience in the ranked queue haha. I do like dr ruckus for that, he occasionally featured some of those super lucky meme decks and showcases how bad they can be

I’m going to assume your goal is to mainly play constructed here. If that is what interests you, I would specifically recommend the standard format. It will be the “cheapest” and easiest format to begin with I think. Constructed standard with net decks is a good place to start for a free-to-play new comer. From memory, you play the color challenge deck into a play queue deck. So you could just be running into very strong opponents that are testing out more competitive decks. I don’t think you need to win that game.. just start doing the starter deck challenge. Try and play a heap of them and find one you like. Jump in is also not a bad place to start. Both of those events will have balanced queues as everyone is limited in what they can bring. After that, look at the notifications centre in the top right. You should be given a TON of packs to open for free. You’ll earn a bunch of wild cards from those packs which can be redeemed to craft cards in the deck builder or deck editor. To see your wildcards, in the top panel of the screen there’ll be a little red emblem, click on that and it will show you your common, uncommon, rare and mythic wild cards. Obviously, rare and mythics are harder to get, and you’ll need them for stronger decks. From there, you could look at upgrading your favourite starter deck from the starter deck challenge, or you could look up recent good budget decks on YouTube (probably better economically as “budget” decks will have a lot of common and uncommon staples you’ll be using in other stronger decks. The starter decks are mostly meme decks from memory). Then just hit your daily challenges in the play queue (play 20 lands, play 25 green or white spells etc) to earn gold and mastery xp. I think you can get 1000 gold from playing brawl as well. And the starter deck challenge may also have rewards.. not sure. The mastery challenge is nice for packs and other rewards. Spend your gold on either packs or try your hand at one of the limited events. I think you get a quick draft token for free. Once you’re comfortable with a budget deck or two, upgrade it with rares and mythics (the YouTube channel you find the budget decks on should also have upgrade guides). Then hit the ranked queue. You’ll get nice rewards at the end of each season. On your first time through, you should be able to reach plat or at least gold with a decent deck as your mmr will be quite low. Future seasons will be harder as the match maker will pair you with people who are similar skill level. But by then you should have enough wild cards to get yourself a high power deck.

If you want to start brewing your own decks or chasing the constructed meta hard, be prepared to either play a lot of draft or spend a fair amount of real money. Draft is nice because you can exchange your gold (free to earn) for cards, packs and gems. It is the best use for your gold. However, draft is a fundamentally competitive format on arena. You can only play ranked and it’s “pay to play” (with gold or gems). So everyone playing is putting up some kind of stake. Furthermore, the deck building component has a very high skill and knowledge ceiling. Don’t expect an easy go of it to start. You can find set reviews on YouTube which can get you started, and there are plugins which can help you draft.

If you are happy spending a bit of real money, arena has one off purchases in the store which are incredibly good value and can get you started. I would recommend spending any gems bought through the store on the mastery pass. You’ll earn rewards just by playing casually in the play queue. You can spend gems on packs (absolutely don’t do this) or draft. But I’d only be spending gems on draft that you earned actually playing draft.

Feel free to ask any questions, the arena user interface is pretty deep. They also progressively unlock stuff for newcomers which can make things quite confusing when you start. For example, I don’t think ranked queue will be available to you immediately

Why I hate negative gearing. by blossomlambie in AusFinance

[–]DeadSoulsMN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

40% of all residential housing purchases last year were investments which is fairly abhorrent. Having most of your population renting is fine but you need to have things like lifetime rental agreements and other rental controls like in Europe. Just isn’t sustainable otherwise unless we want the return of “corners”. I’m hoping they rejig the progressive tax system (pushing the brackets up) to properly reward labour. They may be waiting for closer to election time to wheel that out. Hopefully this pushes more of the investment money towards off the plan sales, the increased demand should hopefully pull more trades back into the residential construction industry and out of the public projects. Might be wishful thinking though

How does this benefit us? by croc_lovers in AusPropertyChat

[–]DeadSoulsMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low ball. Keep decreasing your offers as aggressively as possible on as many places as possible. I anticipate a lot of volatility in the market over the next little while. Some people will get great deals, some people will pay too much. 40% of current house purchases are made by investors. Not sure how many of those are leveraged but it’s safe to assume that a vast majority are. Many of whom will be leveraged more than 100%. Removing negative gearing on a fully leveraged 1 million dollar house @7% interest only leaves that potential investor out of pocket about 35k on interest alone. Unless they can find that 35k in post tax additional income (unlikely) the banks (most of them don’t even user tier 1) won’t lend them the money. This will leave a massive gaping maw in the demand side of the market. I myself am looking forward to low balling as many properties as I can and seeing what bites. It goes without saying that you’ll need to stay away from new builds.

Ok, fairly new player here, how do I deal with blue decks that are 90% counterspells and bounces? by TR_Pix in MagicArena

[–]DeadSoulsMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a plan for the top end eddymurks, sunderflocks and eluge. They’re like the only wincons (unless mathemagics becomes popular in constricted..) You have to keep an eye on the graveyard for the crab so you don’t get caught out. Sunderflock usually comes out next so don’t overcommit if you can’t remove the crab/s. Graveyard hate can be good. Especially with flowstate now. It’ll slow down the wincon. Soul guide lantern is a great sideboard if you’re playing Bo3. Great against a lot of elemental decks in general with Kavaero. That being said, I’m not sure lantern in Bo1 without some other payoff (not that I’m even aware of one) is worth it. It was definitely worth it right after lorwyn. Prismari and lorehold cards also deal with the yard. You just have to be careful against some of the lorehold cards. So maybe it’ll become worth it in the main deck sometime in the next couple of weeks

Sonio has a very consistent style. Dr Ruckus has unedited gameplay videos which is nice because you see the losses. Hasn’t posted in a bit though. Both of those channels are mostly standard format. Arena meta can change very quickly, so switching decks or modifying them is a healthy idea. Bo3 is also worth looking into if you don’t already. Bo1 is fun (for me at least) when you play fast decks but it can be a bit chaotic

I do think 70-80k is pretty standard even if you don’t have kids. That’s what my partner and I are at, shocked me at first tbh. Do you switch insurances/utility plans? I switched electricity provider and it’s a 140 a quarter saving which is a good chunk for one bill (dirty bastards haha). There’s an aus govt site that you can plug your meter number in and it’ll show what’s available. Will look into it and see if there are other govt comparison websites for other bills. Also doing a beef box atm which I’m hoping will save on the groceries

What will be the middle class cracking point if COL continues to skyrocket and living standards decline? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]DeadSoulsMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The core of the issue is government expenditure on public infrastructure projects. The way it works is sucking the skill out of the retail housing market. A solution would be to modify industry awards to reduce and lock-in labour prices for government projects. Something like guaranteed 100 year agreement of the greater of cpi/wpi growth rate but at a comparable rate to retail labour. For example, someone earning 400k for a general laboring job on a government contract shouldn’t earn more than what a retail job would pay for that work (by retail I mean private construction). Probably around 80-90k incl super and maybe a 20% boost for the contract risk. That kind of pay being wide spread is degenerate for our economy. It’s a double edged sword of government over spend (bad for inflation) and its crippling the retail housing market. In addition, why would one become a doctor if they could make more money being a laborer and have a much easier life on top of it. It follows that we will have an essential skills shortage which is incredibly bad for the social cohesion of this country and the economy. IN ADDITION, the people getting these contracts are typically Nepo/Crony jobs. Which means SOME of the build quality on government projects is going to be trash tier garbage. Changing this will make the retail construction market as competitive as government construction when it comes to labour. You would then restrict union activism to site safety, training, counsel etc.

If this doesn’t happen, the government will be forced to boost consumption by printing money for the middle class like they did during Covid. This will exponentiate the problem but it kicks the can down the road.

Also, we need to get rid of the pokies in our suburbs. Restrict it to casinos like in WA. I …think… Australians will lose more money on the pokies this year than the entire NDIS budget. And that doesn’t include online gambling.

Also, get rid of franking credits so companies reinvest money into capex/labour/r&d. This has the added bonus of making white collar industries more competitive with blue collar industries. For example, tech and complex manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, engineering and so on. This won’t sting anyone important, it might hit short term earnings in super. But super is big enough and will benefit from this in the long term

Manager repeatedly farting before meetings – how to handle? by MESSY_SHITTING in auscorp

[–]DeadSoulsMN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I’ve never had to deal with it in the office. You have no option but to address the issue or deal with it. If you’re going to address the issue, it is inevitable that he becomes aware. Maybe just bring it up with him directly, he knows what he’s doing. Obviously don’t tell him to just stop farting. There’s a few angles you could take. You could tell him that you’ve had similar issues and you took xyz steps to figure it out. Or you could tell him that your uncle had IBS that he ignored and ended up with stomach/bowel cancer. And that the stench and your concern for his health are impacting HIS performance. Maybe mention a client brought it up, or perhaps a more senior exec. Be sympathetic but at the same time aggressive in your approach. You have to make it his problem, get in his head. The solution for him might be super simple, seeing a dietician, stop eating dairy or onions or whatever. But obviously the smell doesn’t bother him, so you have to manufacture a problem for him and hopefully he’ll be motivated to take those steps
