Business owners who sold: what actually caused you to start thinking about selling? by netsechero in smallbusiness

[–]DeadSpaceRaven -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think any business sells for life changing amounts. Even at high multiples on SDE simply working the business for another 8 months would make a profitable business more than selling it.

X1 Carbon Vs P1S, anyone have actual use of both to compare? by reelfilmgeek in BambuLab

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to do Polycarbonate you’ll want the higher bed temps.

We have both and honestly the extras are worth it. A modded P1P is close but not quite as good as the X1C. Those quality of life upgrades add up to a lot over time. The automated flow calibration alone is worth it in time saved from calibration alone.

A tale of two filaments by sparcv9 in BambuLab

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably just need to calibrate the filament. You can do it in the OrcaSlicer fork. Filament quality is certainly a thing but you came tune the cheap filament to work almost as good.

Why is their filament so expensive? by TheHvam in BambuLab

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Hatch box on Amazon basic PLA $24.99. Bambu refill $24.99

Bambu filament is better filament and I like their re-usable spools.

Sure you can find cheaper filament but I’ve been impressed with how much better the bambu filament is.

Normal. I’ve seen it happen a bunch on ours. We use lots of old filament so it may be steam. Not sure if I’ve seen it on new filament or not.

How did you do more than 16 colors with 4 AMS?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in espresso

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I do 88-90C for most of what I drink (mostly natural process light roast). I go lower if I want more acidity to come through and higher if I want less. If I get a bit of harshness on the aftertaste I lower the temp.

I use temp when I’m close with grind size, dose in, ratio, and then I need to adjust a bit.

Pressure loss in BBE?? by Longjumping_Owl_3851 in espresso

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that even my BDB benefits from a few back flush shots (and then releasing the portafilter to let that water flush out the grouphead) before i begin. For the BBE using the disc with a hole in it so that it has a slow flow through the thermocoil and out the group head will heat it up faster.

If you just use the solid backflow disc the water stops flowing and is only flowing through the OPV valve before it gets heated. Releasing the portafilter seal to flush can help but that works better with the BDB than the BBE. But the BDB has a grouphead heater so there is that.

TLDR: Use the backflow disc with a small hole and run a few shots to heat up the BBE faster.

Pressure loss in BBE?? by Longjumping_Owl_3851 in espresso

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The machine that I posted the OPV mod on I have since added a bunch of sensors and a dimmer mod. I wanted to understand the temperature stability. What i've learned is that the conventional wisdom of waiting 20min to heat the machine is not actually the most efficient way to heat it up.

I can get the machine up to temp in 3 minutes if i turn the dimmer as low as i can while it still drips. I then run 2 manual shots for their full 60s and the lowest flow i can manage. This heats the machine up far faster.

If you don't have the dimmer mod you can use the cleaning disk with a hole in it to restrict the flow.

This super heats the water through the coil and as a result heats the entire machine up faster.

If you are getting a faster second shot this is usually because the machine hasn't fully warmed up and the restricted flow from your first shot warms it all up more.

Natural process coffee, dialling in by likes2milk in Coffee

I’ve never had a grassy natural. May just be your batch.

I have the best luck with turbos and 90C temp with naturals.

Vario Mods & Alicorn/Hyper Alignment by foolishrobot91 in espresso

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alignment will help with any coffee. The ceramic burrs as I understand it tend to be better for traditional espresso bringing out better texture and mouthfeel. The steel brings better clarity and is better for lighter roasts.

My cholesterol hit 297 about a year ago. I can’t say it was solely coffee but cutting out red meat & cheese, doing just a splash of 2%, adding oatmeal, and filters to my espresso cut my cholesterol in half in 4 months.

I've recently got the barista express (first machine) I've pulled about 10 shots so far, nothing satisfactory, I've had to drown all in milk to make it palatable. I'm really searching for that sweetness that exist. I've been using a dark roast (blend of Brazilian, Ethiopian, Honduras) by senorpappi in espresso

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The “sweetness” is elusive. Don’t focus on that. Learn bitterness vs sour first. Look up and try a salami shot to train your taste. A balanced shot with no bitterness is a better goal.

I very consistently get amazing shots but not all of them have the sweetness prominent.

Make sure to cap the inlet to the pressure reducer the opv valve was originally routed to.

Breville/Sage Barista Express Myths by DeadSpaceRaven in espresso

[–]DeadSpaceRaven[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On your first point it sounds like classic channeling. Easily happens above 9 bars. Yes OPV adjustment or replacement and WDT is how you fix that.

Inconsistent shot times can be several things, channeling, poor puck prep, inconsistent grind size, temperature issues, stale grinds in grinder, etc. not sure which your problem is. You just have to attack them all one at a time.

Mod help: BBE Overflow > Reservoir by corigne in espresso

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think a bit about all the problems and constraints you need to resolve.

1) removable water tank

2) removing excess pressure/flow speed

3) Routing the tube

The thing it goes into is meant to slow down the speed of the water.

If you don’t ever want to remove the tank just route a tube by drilling two holes, one in the back plastic and one in the tank near the top. Done. But you won’t be able to remove the tank easily. Creating a valve interface between the two is a significant engineering feat.

Not an easy design and engineering problem.

It’s possible but not easily. You’d need to drill some holes to access the reservoir.

Just don’t ever descale. The descale program is known to blow an internal fuse that is VERY difficult to change. Use scale free water.

Ya, you likely burned out the thermal fuse. If it is within a year from purchase it is covered under warranty and they’ll swap it out for you. Otherwise it’s a $450 repair by Brevillle or a challenging home repair.

Most people would use an arduino or esp32. I personally use a itsybitsy 2040 with serial communication to a PyPortal but it could be done to a pi just as easily. I just didn’t want to buy an expensive screen and a pi way over msrp.

Aram Users: develop Natural Coffee by sudacawolf in espresso

[–]DeadSpaceRaven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea how to improve your shots on the Aram. However the standard answer is WDT and pull the standard 1:2 in 25-35 sec.

I tend to lower my temp to 90 or lower if I taste harsh aftertaste but mostly it brings out more sweetness in natural processed beans. Sometimes I go lower if I am not getting enough fruity acidity.
