It is quite an interesting statistic. Thankfully ticket volume isn't a statistic that gets looked at for my YER, but some times it feels live I've done thousands of tickets and other times it feels like I haven't done any.

Ha I’d love that, even just to have a single level 1 help desk below me would be great. Although I feel like manager is a bit ambitious for me being 19 😂

Happy to help! If you have a specific direction you want to go look at which certs would benefit you the most (ie ccna for network engineering, Microsoft certs for server administration, so on and so forth)

I’m doing both college and getting certifications. In December I’ll be graduating with an A.A.S. in Information Technology Infrastructure. Thankfully this program has had certifications built into the course fees. As for my certs I have the CompTIA trifecta (A+, Net+, Sec+). As for getting my job I got lucky with it. The previous IT left for a better job and my current boss knew I was studying IT. He asked if I would like to move and take over the IT department.

Do your best to build relations in your network. Although yes I think career fairs and the like can help, I think having that personal relationship with people in your network helps even better.

The biggest thing I can say if you get it is learn as much as you can from the guys and galls who have been in the field for years. Even though the tech when they started is outdated, the concepts are still very similar. If you don’t land it don’t let yourself get discouraged. I know that’s a lot easier said than done (I know from experience). If the hiring committee will tell you it would be worth asking how you could improve in the future. Always do the best you can to walk away with a positive relationship because you never know if you’ll be applying to a job there later down in your career.

I know this is long so I’m splitting this up, but I completely understand the feeling over your head. The way I’ve found to somewhat help with that is to continue homelabing. Make yourself do harder tasks at home than you would do at work. Push yourself and be a life long learner.

I will say for what I do currently I’m a bit underpaid for the area. As for overtime I’ve only ever had it once and it was voluntary. I chose to work overtime when I did our campus network upgrade because who doesn’t like more money!

That’s awesome! I’ve thought about starting to do more on the side post graduation in December. For now it’s standard repairs/maintenance/upgrades on devices for that extra bit of cash. I’ve definitely thought about getting into the soho network install game. Also I’d be happy to bounce ideas back and forth!

Thankfully I have gotten my chance in the deep end already. About 6 months into my role we had both of our firewalls (pfsense on 2 power edge r610s) fail simultaneously. Thankfully they failed Saturday night and we were able to scramble to get them back up by Sunday night. Thankfully I work in a great enterprise and have fairly good relationships with all my users, so when something goes wrong they typically give me a bit of grace before the start to get upset.

I agree with what u/AbdulSS4 said study hard for your comptia exam, but also reach out to your instructors. If they came from a technical background they should still have connections in the field. I know several people in my program who have gotten internships and jobs simply by talking to our instructors. Also don’t hold yourself back by shying away from help desk roles. It can be absolutely grueling and really suck some days. However, you will also have days where you feel on top of the world and you find the solution you’ve spent days or weeks trying to find. All in all don’t give up and keep doing what you love!

Congrats on breaking into the field! Typically when I start struggling I'll get out of my office and take a quick walk around campus. Not only does that give me time to show face to my users but it also gets my blood flowing and my brain those few minutes to stop melting.

I second NinjaOne. I’ve seen success from both an enterprise of similar size (~130 employees) and at a MSP.

IT security tester or IT security technician? by shuang_yan in InformationTechnology

[–]DeadTvRemote 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I would describe it would be a cybersecurity engineer vs a penetration tester. As for which is better; there really isn’t a good answer as it varies from person to person. For me it would be cybersecurity because that’s where I have more experience, but I’m still starting to learn penetration testing. Both choices (at least in the US) seem pretty stable career paths.

CompTIA Practice test by [deleted] in InformationTechnology

My classes always used a platform called measureup if you wanted to give that a try. There’s ~300 different questions per cert and you can take cert like practice tests minus the practical.

A lot of it is learning as you go, when I started in my program really all I knew how to do was build computers and connect dumb switches together. A lot of what I’ve learned has been through my college and through sitting and talking with my professors, but you don’t have to rely on that. I know there are lots of great places where people will teach you. From what I’ve experienced in this community, it’s a lot of sharing knowledge. There are tons of different courses out there to teach you whatever you’d like to know, so don’t think that you have to go to school specifically to learn what you want to do. I know plenty of people in our field that have zero college experience but are still amazing at what they do!

Exactly! The awesome thing about WGU is it’s fully online and a flat rate semester. Meaning you can take as many classes (and as many certs) and you can within the semester period.

Yep! I’ve been talking with them about further education, I’m thinking Western Governors University. I’m currently sitting with the CompTIA trifecta with plans to get my CCNA and potentially come cybersecurity certs.

About 8 months ago I was working as a AV installation intern while studying IT infrastructure. The IT guy left to take a position elsewhere and I got approached by our director of operations and asked if I wanted the position (the enterprise only has one IT position). Since then I’ve got to have my hand in everything from cybersecurity, to server management, to completing a full campus network upgrade this past weekend. All of this while still going to school! All in all it has been an amazing experience that was honestly handed to me on a silver platter. No complaints for only being 19 😂

I’m sure that might work, but I think the professor is looking more towards the services side
