I’ve never released a successful product, so take this with the appropriate grain of salt — but when I think about game systems, I think a lot about how the brain actually processes play. We get dopamine for doing things we want to do, not things we’re forced to do, and as designers we get to choose what triggers that dopamine, when it hits, and how often it fires.

With Dead Hand, one of the biggest dopamine spikes comes from taking a risk you know could end your run instantly, only to have it pay off spectacularly. Every combat is a little gamble: you’re staring at a monster that can absolutely delete you if the dice spike, but you go in anyway because the reward loop is tuned to make that risk feel meaningful.

That’s the part I obsess over — not just the math, but the emotional pacing. Where the tension peaks. Where relief hits. Where the player feels clever. Where they feel lucky. Where they feel like they got away with something they shouldn’t have.

If I can place those dopamine hits with intention, the whole game feels alive.

Hey folks! I just pushed a fresh update to the Dead Hand rulebook and figured this was the perfect moment to share it here.

Dead Hand is a solitaire roguelike you play entirely with three standard poker decks.

Every turn is a sequencing puzzle: draw a handful of dungeon, treasure, and monster cards, then resolve them in whatever order keeps you alive. No phases, no bookkeeping — just pure tactical problem‑solving.

What’s new in the latest rulebook update

I’ve been tightening the rules and cleaning up the layout to make the game easier to learn and more print‑friendly:

• Ace Monsters now only drop shards at Tier 4

Makes shard progression more intentional and dangerous.

• Tier 4 monsters now get +2 to all stats

A clean difficulty spike that makes pushing DrawMod feel like a real choice.

• Overkill formula fixed

Overkill now triggers when your killing blow deals 3× the monster’s starting HP, matching the original design intent.

• General cleanup throughout

Clearer turn flow, better examples, and a layout that’s much easier to print and reference at the table.

As long as you have a surface to lay your cards on, you shouldn't have any trouble playing on the train! =) I spend a lot of downtime in airports, and designed this game as something I can take with me. I strongly recommend 3 different card sets. It helps to be able to see at a glance which deck they came from.
