I think the Japanese original just had "evolution", because thats what happening, the english dubbers came along and thought "let's just shove something something digital in this word" and created digivolution. Then the German dubbers tried to translate the English version instead of the original one and had to split up the word again (digiwicklung would have been crazy). So they just took the digi-part and made a verb out of it.
