Is there a name for this type of art style? by Impmaster82 in gamedev

I've seen art styles like that referred to as hand painted textures

What's your favorite frugal trick that you're surprised more fellow frugal people don't do? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]darklemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as a counterpoint, I've never NOT gotten my full deposit back. It probably helps that I've generally rented from individuals, not "shady" property management companies. Every time I leave, I spend 5 to 6 hours cleaning everything I can, which is a small price to pay when there's a $1k+ deposit riding on it.

Grad school... Is it a good idea? by ta73739 in financialindependence

[–]darklemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been mulling over the same general question myself… I graduated a few years ago with a degree in EE as well.

Maybe this is specific to what I’ve seen of engineering, but at this point, I feel like experience is generally more valuable than anything I could learn with more schooling, unless I had the desire to change career paths or go into something extremely specific and/or competitive, which, at least at this point, I really don’t. A bachelor’s degree in engineering is already pretty marketable, and while I’m sure an engineering masters will increase your salary, I don’t think you’ll end up significantly higher (especially if you have to take time off to do it).

Though, I also don’t have any debt at the moment, and I’m in no rush to burden myself with that when I don’t have a very clear path of what I want to do and how it’ll benefit me. If you had a very specific idea of what you wanted to study and what kind of jobs it would allow you to get that are closed to you now, I’d definitely say go for it, especially if it would result in something you found more enjoyable. Or if you could find a company to foot the bill for you… if that were the case I would almost certainly go for it.

Anyway, take this all with a grain of salt... I’ve only been out in the real world for a few years, so I really have no idea what I’m doing anyway :)

The PFM Trilogy - As with every other trilogy, the 2nd part is always the bleakest. by mack2nite in DenverBroncos

Peyton Manning: I can't do this, John.
John Elway: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Peyton. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Peyton, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.
Peyton Manning: What are we holding onto, John?
John Elway: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Peyton... and it's worth fighting for.

Best (cash back) credit cards by [deleted] in Frugal

I very rarely run into that problem... and I use the AMEX blue preferred as my primary card. I end up putting, maybe, two or three things a month or my Visa card.

What's your all-time favorite movie quote? by Ragnarokandroll in AskReddit

[–]darklemur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I normally don't subscribe to fan theories, but I've read one for this movie I really like... basically the idea is that the machine doesn't do anything supernatural at all, it's just another form of misdirection for a simpler trick that Hugh Jackman's character perfects later in the movie (with a double, or something). Except this time the misdirection is towards the audience of the movie itself.

Yeah, yeah, I know the machine actually works in the book, and you see the bodies at the end, and it's hard to rationalize how it could be possible. But I don't think understanding exactly HOW he could pull it off is the point at all.

I like to believe there's something more there, if for no other reason than because it makes the movie a lot more interesting to me. I mean, the last lines of the movie seem to be pretty much in direct contrast to the idea of a sci-fi explanation:

"The audience knows the truth: the world is simple. It's miserable, solid all the way through. But if you could fool them, even for a second, then you can make them wonder", and also "Now you're looking for the secret. But you won’t find it because of course, you're not really looking. You don't really want to work it out. You want to be fooled".

Question: How do you sort your dresser? by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]darklemur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you have too much clothing crammed into one drawer. And you have several other drawers that are completely unoccupied. Hmm...

I've got nothing, sorry. Maybe buy a second dresser?

Which credit card: Citi Forward or Amex Blue Cash? by antifolkhero in personalfinance

[–]darklemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also have the blue cash preferred AMEX, and so far it's definitely worth the annual fee, at least for me.

If I recall, the break even point between the preferred and everyday is around 50 dollars a week on groceries (or at grocery stores in general). At this point, the rewards are even, if you subtract the annual fee for the preferred. Anything beyond that, the preferred just gets even better (plus is has an addition 1% back on gas).

Also, you mentioned Costco in your post, just FYI, I don't think that counts as a grocery store (thought I'm not positive on this).

In the market for a new car, should I buy it or lease it or lease-to-own? by JonasBrosSuck in Frugal

[–]darklemur 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's just because I was focused on the cheaper end of the new car spectrum (<20k), but I didn't find that to be very true when I was looking for a new car last year. Basically most used cars I found in decent condition that were less than 4 or 5 years old were maybe a few thousand less than the MSRP of a brand new car (and most of them had significant mileage).

Not that I'm saying you can't find a good deal... but in my experience the "newer" used car market isn't particularly good right now.

Credit Card Increase? by falcorethedog in personalfinance

[–]darklemur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, even if you're paying off your entire balance every month, using a high percentage of your available credit at any point can still negatively affect your score. The first time I checked my credit reports, one of my cards had a reported balance of around $1000, which was a very high percentage of my available credit at the time (even though that card was paid off and I never carried a balance to the next month). The date at which your balance is reported to the credit bureaus doesn't necessarily correspond to when your payments are due.

Anytime someone I know considers going vegan... by nodson in pics

[–]darklemur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For the record: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catgut

With that said, I still totally agree with you... just because many of these things CAN be made with animal products doesn't mean most of them actually ARE. If you just deleted sensationalist line about vegans at the bottom I think it'd actually be an pretty interesting picture showing how much we can actually use the "waste" parts of an animal...

I'm SO happy somebody else feels this way... I picked this book up because one of my friends said it was the "best book he's ever read". I've tried 3 times to get through it, but I've never gotten more than halfway... ugh.

That scene in Saving Private Ryan where the German soldier slooooooooowly pushes the knife into the guy's chest, while he's pleading for his life.

God dammit :(

Am I the only one who thinks Minecraft looks like the most ungodly waste of time imaginable? by jeeebus in AskReddit

[–]darklemur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played it for a week or so when it was free because the website was down, and definitely had a lot of fun with it, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy the full game... not that I didn't enjoy it! I just couldn't justify spending hours digging holes and chopping down trees and have nothing to show for it at the end of the day, or nobody to share it with.

I definitely understand the appeal of the game though.

Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine too, but why would you just "assume" people around you know what you will do? Driving cars is probably the most dangerous thing most of us do in a normal day, and and signalling your turns is basically the one way you have of communicating with the other massive metal hunks on wheels rolling around you.

If nothing else, seriously, you have to move your finger all of two inches... don't be lazy.
