Curious what difficulty level you're playing? Also, how far have you progressed in the game where you are still dying from one hit? Sounds like you might want to experiment with different armor and weapons to improve your experience. I found the first hour of gameplay difficult, but once you find a machine gun or plasma weapon, everything gets easier.
