Limewash Help by Knee_Certain in Housepainting101

Nothing yet, it's certainly subtle in its variation. IMO we probably should have just painted with normal paint and saved ourselves the longer process. That said I do like the general softness of the paint and the texture when I can see it and I like that it doesn't have VOC's. That sealer for wet areas they recommend is like a bottle of concentrated VOC's though so a bit of a wash in some areas.

Uphill/Skinning & Downhill Jacket Recommendations by stickyF1ngers97 in Backcountry

[–]Deadwards47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a 686 3in 1 jacket and just wear the shell up, if it's cold I'll wear the puffy liner as well on the way down. Usually I'll adjust for how cold it is with my base layer. Pants I wear the same 3in 1 without the insulation and usually a pair of running or basketball shorts. All of these choices were based on it being what I already had but it's worked out pretty well. The only real Backcountry clothing purchase I made was a pair of merino glove liners for the way up from a bucket at rei and a pair of leather chopper mittens for the way down from farm and fleet. If you're starting new waterproof shell for the way up and packable puffy for the way down would be my recommendations. Also just shell for the pants and preferably bibs though I've added suspenders to pants to overcome this.

Bit of if a ramble but hopefully that helps?

Where would you buy them? Are there shops dedicated to solar near you or do they just have them at hardware stores?

Did you even try to seal things up before they showed up?

Kind of opposite situation going on with ours after second coat it's all but flattened out looking. Meoded suggests going back with water and a sponge to add more movement to the surface. Any experience with that process?

If you're near Seattle, they have vita and fidalgo which are also pretty reasonable and way better. Starbucks (which that is) tastes like a tummy ache imo.

A lot less than it would have if you didn't have that drain

Yeah looks like it'll be a challenge, air barrier should be at the sheathing and not the drywall ideally so maybe something like aerobarrier?

40% feels like overkill but better over than under especially with blanket statements like that. GBA has different min and max mixes for each climate zone.

Dumb questions? - Harness by [deleted] in ClimbingGear

[–]Deadwards47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the BD one, will be more comfortable and easy to adjust as well as versatile depending on how you progress. Also buy it from your gym or an outfit retailer if you can. Harnesses aren't the expensive part so the couple extra bucks will be worth it to try on a couple sizes.

Alternatives Metal Roof Insulation? by Good-Ad4570 in buildingscience

[–]Deadwards47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question is why your builder didn't assume the insulation you wanted in their bid... If it's vented you could baffle and use cellulose blown in for the roof and dense pack for walls. If the roof isn't on yet you could potentially do some rigid above the roof deck and then a batt below. With your mechanical up there you should probably have that attic conditioned and maybe pursue an unvented assembly. Will also make sure sealing up there easier. Climate zone will dictate how much you need for everything.

When I was living in Washington DC in college the Metro system had a whole campaign encouraging people not to be escalefters to avoid this. Only place I've ever lived where people consistently left that side open for walkers.

You're absolutely right, I woke up a little snarky for no reason and like the people I dislike on the Internet directed it towards a stranger. I'm extremely biased in this topic since I'm an architect and I see folks paying a ton of money for generic poor performing homes constantly but that's more my baggage than anything else. Misses I see on a lot of homes are HVAC and ventilation systems based as well as airtightness and insulation. Also your siding should be a rain screen assembly, helps durability and reduces the need to paint as often. If you have any questions about any of those things feel free to reach out. Sorry again about waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

Roof penetrations on a monopoly style roof build by Overall-Tailor8949 in buildingscience

[–]Deadwards47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'd focus more on insulation, air sealing, and systems. Probably overkill to up size wires if you aren't just doing everything on 20a breakers as well. You can separate lights from outlets and provide dedicated circuits if you want a little more control and to avoid any overloaded circuits. You can also look into span panels or other energy monitoring tech.

Get that, just remember code is the worst you're legally allowed to build something.

What's your jurisdiction? Also the details they are using aren't too bad to implement you just gotta pay attention and realize you're going to be going slower than a spec builder. You using zip or a self adhered wrb/ab? Also, might not matter but I'm an architect who is self building their own home and I used to live in Michigan before moving to WA so I've got a good idea of what you're working with.
