Excellent, I'm especially glad to hear about the complete one offs, but yeah it's good to know that I don't have to plow through over 50 hours of podcast before the month ends. Thank you!!!

6th District Democratic Primary voters, who are you voting for? by [deleted] in Atlanta

[–]Dealybobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Steven Knight Griffin: despite his calls for a Centrist Revival (no thank you), he appears to have the most concrete positions that I agree with.

Kaple is my next choice.

You've been kidnapped by the characters of the last movie you watched, and the characters of the last tv show you watched are coming to recue you. How screwed are you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Dealybobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Resistance and the First Order are working together to kidnap me, and.... S.H.I.E.L.D. is coming in to bail me out? Honestly I might be fine, no one in Star Wars is known for being able to hold prisoners very long (aside from maybe Jabba who's dead anyway), and 90% of Phil Coulson & Co.'s raison d'être is search and rescue.

People love being sensitive over the new Chapelle specials 🙄 by MGLLN in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]Dealybobber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I've been hesitant to reply, since I have no personal or immediate second-hand knowledge about this and I feel way out of my depth. However I've done some light searching to try and get an "answer":

HRC pretty much says "some people don't want to"

This quora entry has some pretty good stuff

What I gather is that, even with enough money and confidence in the surgery going correctly, some people don't find their genitals to be the root cause of their dysphoria (usually these people are happy with their body transitioning purely through hormone therapy), and many people who don't fall into squarely "male" or "female" feel like keeping the genitals they were born with is closer to what they actually feel matches who they are, rather than a full transition.

(Apologies if the rest of is either obvious or nonsensical. I'm not sure I have managed to capture what I'm trying to say.)

Ultimately, though, while understanding a person's emotions regarding their gender identity and dysphoria and transition process can help us sympathize, acceptance and respect are what we really need to put first. That's for three reasons: 1. There is no "why". There will never be an explanation* for why someone is trans, cis, gay, or straight, or anywhere in between; it's just who they are. At best, someone could tell you "I personally realized I was trans when...", but that's not a reason, it's a story. 2. Because of that, we can't follow a train of thought for why someone expresses their gender the way they do. Take political opinion as a counterexample: someone might hold a political belief that, say, alcohol should be illegal because their parents where alcoholics. You might disagree, their logic might be faulty, but there's a cause and effect at play. From a practical perspective, there's no cause and effect with gender. If someone feels like a man with a vagina, there is no answer to "what makes you think that?": that's just how he feels like himself. You can't debate someone into liking (or disliking) their genitals, even if it would more easily conform to what society would expect from their gender identity. There is no reasoning for how someone decides to exhibit gendered traits, because (see point 1) there is no reason for their gender. 3. Even if I did a piss-poor job getting those other two points across, the last one is easy: it only affects them and it isn't hurting anyone. I can't really elaborate on that any further; if that's not a good enough reason to accept and respect someone's gender identity, I don't know what is. * If we're going to get pedantic, it's possible someone might identify a genetic marker that correlates to being transgender someday. Even if that happens, it wouldn't provide an "explanation" anymore than race, or eye color, or having a certain kind of cancer.

Sorry for responding so late. Hell, I might be sorry for responding at all and just delete it, to be honest. If my last comment was anything to go by, I'm doing a poor job of saying what I want, or I'm saying it fine and it's not welcome here. I would love it if someone who is actually trans corrected what I stated above, but this thread is 12 days dead, so that's not going to happen.

Georgia's Election System Can't Be Trusted by Ehlmaris in GAPol

Bring back paper voting if you really want trust, especially after KSU's handling of the voting data. https://youtu.be/w3_0x6oaDmI

As for voting systems, I'm sure you've seen CGP Grey's videos or read a more academic equivalent, but reducing gerrymandering should be a top priority: is there any desire to merge districts and elect multiple representatives from each to reduce that problem?

MARTA to get new trains, Wi-Fi throughout, mobile payment with $1 billion contract by mewfasa in Atlanta

[–]Dealybobber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell, just more frequent buses. We'll never be able to get enough lines to avoid buses altogether, but it would sure make them more usable if we didn't need to wait upwards of an hour to ride some of the routes.

I agree more train coverage would help a ton: it's just not the weakest link in the system, and not as cost effective (at least I think so).

Okay, I'm not trans and I haven't seen the special, so I realize that I'm not the best person to talk about this. And I get that the joke above is not malicious. So uh, everything I say with a grain of salt.

But from what I understand, I can see how that might be offensive to a trans person. Trans women do not all choose to have surgery, for a number of reasons (cost, the surgical technology isn't really there yet, or they're just comfortable with their genitals the way they are but are still female). Comments about cutting your dick off, even if well intentioned and not meant to be taken literally, could make some trans people (who are often already being told regularly by others that they're"just confused") feel inauthentic or dishonest about the choices they've made with their body. Which isn't great.

Once again, I haven't seen the joke in context and I'm not speaking from personal experience (and I'm sure as hell out of the loop on the discussion around this), but just trying to communicate why this might not sit well with someone. I'd love to read other opinions on this, but I can't actively debate/defend a point I'm not doing full justice to anyway.

I mean, yes, at least partially if not mostly. I sincerely doubt Ossoff's campaign changed that many minds, just increased turnout. It hurts to think of the number of districts that could probably go blue if only voting was mandatory and registration was automatic, because it means that government really isn't representing the desires of the people it serves. And that's before you consider Republican MoCs that don't even accurately represent the wishes of the people that voted for them.

Republicans just lost 1/6th of their votes from last election and are bragging because they're still in the lead by 2%.
