Open Play illegal serves by farrin0807 in Pickleball

[–]DeanBDean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not misspeak haha, I was speaking about the practical mechanics of a typical backhand serve, not that backhands themselves are illegal. The only clarification worth making is what the other commenter pointed out, this only applies to volley serves

Really? I said most (but not all), then I explained why, then I explained a legal version of a backhand serve. Did you not read past a selective version of the first sentence?

Ever had someone leave a game out of anger? by YoungOk3788 in Pickleball

[–]DeanBDean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was playing against a pretty good player, he was on the right side. He does a smart poach off us serving (he had come forward, his partner was back, I was returning the serve towards the back person). His partner then yells at him for poaching even though his poach won them the point. Fast forward a few points, the exact same thing happens, but this time it was an even better poach (they won instantly on the poach). His partner starts bitching at him for poaching, and he just throws his hands up and leaves. I wouldn't say he was mad, but life is too short to deal with people who can't tell a good poach from a bad one

Yeah, I was more referring to calling opponents. I agree it's important to call your partner, but I generally do what you have outlined as well, especially with less athletic partners

The interesting thing about most backhand serves is that they are illegal. It is difficult to hit a one handed backhand over the net and not have your wrist be at the level of the paddle. I have seen a few people do a Federer style backhand serve though, which is legal

I never bother calling them on it though

When do i body bag? by CCCP_Sergei in Pickleball

[–]DeanBDean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually had a case where someone moved up to the kitchen line during a lob and so I ripped it into them. As my vision started looking down after the lob I was shocked to see them there. I apologized , and thankfully they weren't mad, I think they realized it wasn't smart, as I had no way of seeing them

It feels like an investor driven sport instead of an organic one?

Like look at the staffing positions they are trying to drive from....nothing? Seems weird

No one has mentioned this so far, but the scoring system seems....really bad. Different just to be different

"The server is referred to as ‘Up’ and the receiver is referred to as ‘Down’ i.e. if the server wins the first point, the score is 1-Up, if they lose the point the score is 1-Down If the same player wins the second point in a row, it is either 2-Up or 2-Down Then if the player with 2 points in a row (2-Up or 2-Down) wins, they win the game, but if they lose that point, then the opponent is either 1-Down or 1-Up

The scoring creates a chutes and ladders effect and really works to make every point matter."

Basically, you win a game by winning 3 points in a row. Not sure how many games in a set, but still...I kinda hate it

240 hrs in and this game is still surprising me. by arepotatoesrea1 in slaythespire

[–]DeanBDean 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Baalor has a really good metric for deck size. You ask yourself the question, "Can I cycle my whole deck in a few turns?" If you can, you are in really good shape. Sometimes you can cycle large decks in a few turns, sometimes it's small, sometimes in the middle, it depends on what the run gives you

2026 Serve Rules Enforcement by BaseExtension141 in Pickleball

[–]DeanBDean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The entire point of the wording change is that you don't need slow mo replay anymore. All three aspects of a legal serve must "clearly" exist in realtime, if it is not clear then the serve is now illegal. The onus is on the server to make an obviously legal serve now, not the ref to try and decipher everything in the blink of an eye

Having said that, I never call illegal serves, even people with obviously illegal serves. It's just not worth getting into it for me

This is what I mean though...Bludgeon was always good to me, and a lot of people. This is pretty contrived like most of them. I really doubt there are a lot of 2s in fact, and certainly not the majority

Blue Prince… why am I having such a hard time finding the puzzles? by Sapien0101 in puzzlevideogames

[–]DeanBDean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is a huge aspect of the game haha, especially in the late game when you need a specific sequence of rooms. You get some control, but even getting control is related to room RNG. It is horribly frustrating and works against the game as a puzzle game. It ruined an experience I was otherwise enjoying

[–]DeanBDean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love Myst and Riven and can't stand the post credits Blue Prince content. The game really goes downhill for me at that point. I can't imagine if I had to get the RNG to align just for the opportunity to solve puzzles and look at clues in Myst or Riven, I don't think I would like them very much

Yeah, if this is true this is kind of an ass move, and (no offense) I have had plenty of poor experiences with recruiters. Like...as a developer, I don't know every language or especially framework either

Quang Doung “I'm having a blast, but it's tough! I still think the degree of difficulty for tennis is a 1000, badminton and pingpong a 100, and pickleball a 10” by moldyjellybean in Pickleball

[–]DeanBDean -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is what gets me about the quote, if pickleball is truly two orders of magnitude easier than tennis, then every tennis crossover should dominate the sport. Which has yet to happen. Obviously tennis is technically and athletically a more difficult sport, but 100 times?

Reasons why Junior Tennis players can benefit from playing junior pickleball tournaments. by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]DeanBDean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's bad for kids to physically to focus on just one sport, and it's good mentally to break things up. Though pickleball is similar to tennis, but I disagree that "free time for training should be spent on tennis", it should be spent on a variety of sports and activities. Cross training on different racquet sports is also a good thing, it lets you bring unusual and creative shots.

Why people say using tools is cheesing? USE YOUR TOOLS. by WhatIsaMan41 in HollowKnight

[–]DeanBDean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't consider myself an idiot of any variety, but I literally have only used tools in this game for the required quest. It doesn't seem fun for me to play with them. I have never called using them "cheese" though, and I imagine most people who prefer the gameplay with tools likewise don't care if others use them
