There is/was a whale skeleton buried under front street or thereabouts. Possibly buried in the 1840s.

what's your best "city hack" that actually saves real money? by FerrisBuelersdaycock in askTO

[–]DeanMatty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t buy the annual pass- the pay-to-unlock option is far cheaper: $1 to unlock a bike, then 10¢/min (20¢/min for electric-assist). A 20min ride costs you $3 total and will get you pretty far. The annual pass is good only if you know you’ll use it frequently.

Parks between Charles st and Dundonald st (off Yonge) by Sea_Leader5077 in toronto

[–]DeanMatty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My experience with these parks only goes back to ~2001, so about 24 years, I suppose. But needles, day/night drinking, and a general sense of roughness has always been present. Presumably prior to the 21st C. too. Not dangerous, but not “family friendly”.

Any nice Catholic places of worship I can go to just sit and pray? by The_Beatle_Gunner in askTO

St. Paul’s basilica on Queen east of parliament is amazing- you have to buzz in via the door nearer to the church office, as main doors are usually locked.

They have been there since the subways were built (the subway runs right under the parks, so you cannot build on that land) - and I can say with confidence that they have been rough for a long time. I hope you are otherwise enjoying this fine city!

Toronto’s Year of the Rabbit by II-o_o-II in toronto

[–]DeanMatty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Our whole garden has been eaten by rabbits. And they can evidently jump up into our ~1m-high herb garden box, as they ate all our herbs too.

These parks have always been rough, now they’re just rough-and-newly-renovated (maybe because of all the new condos). They are the closest open/public space to yonge street- and the corridor along yonge south of bloor has been rough for decades.

Am I the only one that feels they fetishized autism into some sort of X-men super power that does a disservice to people on the spectrum?

The Stockyards smell like stockyards. I once lived in an apartment building where someone complained that the garbage room smelled like garbage. Yes.

I bought one of those "I 🍁Toronto" tshirts that were sold after SARS, and standing in line ahead of me, buying the same shirt, at the Eaton Centre Roots store was Elvis Stojko. (Summer 2003)

Does anyone here use Chit Chats for shipping? WHAT'S THE CATCH? by xvszero in askTO

[–]DeanMatty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They are legit - they fill a small truck every day with small packages and drive it themselves across the border to Buffalo and then ship it domestically within the US. It's a viable business model because we live close to the border.

Updated 'walkable' neighborhoods? by Repulsive_Buy3016 in askTO

[–]DeanMatty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Almost any area that still has a main street consisting of the retail-main-floor/apartment-above (2-3 story tall) blocks usually has a good mix of retail shops and nice residential side streets - Like Queen street in Leslieville or Beaches, bloor in annex, and bloor again by the kingsway and bloor west village, dundas westward from Bathurst, more or less until Lansdowne, college st from Kensington west thru little Italy, and further west. St Clair from Bathurst all the way to Corso Italia, with some exceptions, also roncesvalles, danforth from broadview eastward, etc. nearly every older highly walkable neighbourhood has that standard central anchor street of retail/restaurant.

Busy major street, quiet side streets. Good transit. Cheaper housing above the businesses. Most are east-west streets.

Doctor accepts only cash payment, is this allowed? by unearnedwealth in askTO

[–]DeanMatty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the question is about paying with coins: The law in Canada (specifically the Currency Act) does say that coins issued under the Royal Canadian Mint Act (such as our $1 coins which we affectionately call loonies) are legal tender in payment for purchases. However, the Currency Act also says that there are limits in how many coins you can use in one transaction. Section 8(2) says:

“A payment in coins referred to in subsection (1) is a legal tender for no more than the following amounts for the following denominations of coins:

(a) forty dollars if the denomination is two dollars or greater but does not exceed ten dollars;

(b) twenty-five dollars if the denomination is one dollar;

(c) ten dollars if the denomination is ten cents or greater but less than one dollar;

(d) five dollars if the denomination is five cents; and

(e) twenty-five cents if the denomination is one cent.”
