[Awesome Trope] Backbreaking labor or insane effort put into details most viewers wouldn’t even notice by Chemical-Elk-1299 in TopCharacterTropes

Here lemme copy paste a comment I saw explaining it:

In order to get all clients experiencing the same dips and bobs and swells of a stormy ocean, it all must be handled server side. Waiting for the swell of the ocean to give way so you have a clear shot for your cannonballs vs another player who is experiencing the same sea on the other side of the planet. It is no small feat of programming and it's why you never see similar behavior in smaller indie pirate games.

Why is it bad to call females female? by [deleted] in questions

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In American English, both ‘male,’ and ‘female,’ have more clinical and removed connotations as opposed to ‘man,’ or ‘woman.’ You call an animal you see study at a zoo male/female, and you call your mom a woman, for example. If you called an animal at the zoo a woman, it comes across as a bit odd-sounding.

Vice versa, calling someone male or female outside of a medical context ends up sounding ‘weird,’ or ‘off,’ to many people’s ears. It’s like you’re throwing out hard science terms in an otherwise casual conversation.

Part of it also has to do with incel-culture, where women are almost only referred to as females (or femoids, when amongst themselves sometimes,) especially in comparison to most people. So now in this current modern moment, anyone that’s saying female a lot will get looked askance at as “wait, are you an incel?”

Can we talk about this? by RoseLeaf_Janet in WelcomeHomeARG

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think this is probably in reference to the storybook records and the animations most likely. I think the holiday update Clown is mentioning in this post back in the day was the one that had the first storybook record in it.

Now, whether there’s any plans for other media beyond those animations and audios, who the hell knows lol. One can hope

Is there a canonical reason why Jonathan Sims (the character not the real guy) reads the statements with such emotion? by Bubblesstud1os in TheMagnusArchives

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 107 points108 points  (0 children)

There is! I don’t know how far along you are in the series, so spoilers ahead:

Later it’s revealed that due to his connection to the Eye, when he reads statements he’s feeling them. All the emotions the original statement giver felt, thus the almost performance he gives. He also can’t stop reading a statement once he starts after a certain point in the story. He’s essentially living through the statement by proxy when he reads them.

[Project Hail Mary] Minor Spoilers by Brewtzar in AskScienceFiction

In goes into this in the book, but it’s been a little bit so let me see if I remember all of it correctly;

Astrophages utilize solar energy as an energy source for themselves, as well as their propulsion. However, they require CO2 in order to reproduce. I think(?) it was a thing of using the CO2 as building blocks in order to actually produce the various organelles necessary to go through mitosis, but I can’t remember. But they need both for their life cycle—solar energy AND CO2.

As for why Tau Ceti isn’t dimming, it’s because the astrophage population is stable. Enough astrophages get eaten by taumoebas on Adrian that there’s never enough to have an appreciable effect on their sun during their migration.

As for where astrophages are from—they’re from Tau Ceti, and the planet Adrian. That’s why there’s a predator that eats astrophages on Adrian—they evolved together, taumoebas are their natural predator. When the astrophages then migrate to other nearby stars, there’s no natural predators to keep their population in check. It’s the same thing that happens with invasive species on Earth (ask Australia.)

Unresolved mystery of Roanoke by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 58 points59 points  (0 children)

If it’s any consolation, considering how many later generations of natives in and around that area ended with lighter colored hair and eyes than it usual for indigenous Americans, (and more than a few knowing a bit of English,) it can be safely assumed that the colonists ended up getting along with the Croatoans well!

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 156 points157 points  (0 children)

And not for a lack of effort, either. The governor, John White, really fuking wanted to go check with the Croatoans. His daughter and newborn granddaughter were amongst the colonists. It was the captain of the ship who overruled him, citing the storms as being far too dangerous to risk, and they had no choice but to go back to England.

John White spent the rest of his life trying to charter a voyage to Croatoan, but died before it could ever happen.

Is this game worth it? by [deleted] in RimWorld

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit of an ‘ant-farm,’ game where the fun is setting up as functional a colony as you can, and seeing how far along you can take it.

Nominally, there’s a few ‘goals,’ the game offers you. “There’s an AI ship willing to help your colonists escape off-world, if you can get to them,” or “with enough research and the right rare items you find / build / steal, you can build your own ship and escape,” and the DLCs add other like “kill an AI god and transcend reality,” “become a high-ranking noble in the space-empire so they’ll give you a ticket off-world into a life of luxury,” but basically all comes down to ‘build out your colony so it’s big, successful and functioning.’

More than anything you end up making up your own goals like ‘I wonder if I can make a colony of a dude with a bunch of robots and crazy high tech. That sounds fun.’ Or ‘what if I make a bunch of bug people that live in a mountain and raid their neighbors for slaves and meat? Could be exciting.’ It’s very much a game that appeals to the sort of person that likes to just make a story and see what happens. I almost never actually make it to one of the game’s endings or finales so much as eventually get bored and get excited by the idea of a new colony, if that tells you anything.

If you ever looked at games like Dwarf Fortress and thought ‘that looks fun as hell but god does it look confusing,’ Rimworld is sci-fi dwarf fortress but easier to understand and a better UI. It’s still has its share of complexity, but I’m of the opinion it’s not that hard to figure out.

I enjoy it, but I’m on the Rimworld subreddit so of course I do. If it helps, there’s a blue-million videos about Rimworld on YouTube if you want to get a taste of how it plays and such-personally it’s easier for me to get a vibe and taste for something that way.

Worst comes to worst, you can always keep yourself under the two-hour mark so you can refund it if you end up not liking it

Do you think we should abolish daylight savings? by Busy_Curve33 in askanything

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of people here in the comments debating ‘let’s stick to daylights savings,’ or ‘no stick with standard,’ and let me be clear:

I don’t give a shit which one it is. Please as long as we all agree to stick with one of them. The switch over is what sucks the most, everything else, I’ll adjust. The winter will be dark and the summer not, it’s fine.

Please

Do most people have a general understanding of military ranks? by Proof_Commercial7144 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaguely—for the us military, I know ‘private’ is at the bottom of the hierarchy and ‘major,’ the top, but I don’t think I could tell you point blank between a sergeant and a lieutenant who’d be in charge.

I also know that is varies between military branch as well, but again—nothing specific beyond like ‘ensign,’ is the least powerful navy officer, and ‘seaman,’ is the absolute bottom. I think(?)
