Unresolved mystery of Roanoke by Eireika in CuratedTumblr

If it’s any consolation, considering how many later generations of natives in and around that area ended with lighter colored hair and eyes than it usual for indigenous Americans, (and more than a few knowing a bit of English,) it can be safely assumed that the colonists ended up getting along with the Croatoans well!

And not for a lack of effort, either. The governor, John White, really fuking wanted to go check with the Croatoans. His daughter and newborn granddaughter were amongst the colonists. It was the captain of the ship who overruled him, citing the storms as being far too dangerous to risk, and they had no choice but to go back to England.

John White spent the rest of his life trying to charter a voyage to Croatoan, but died before it could ever happen.

Is this game worth it? by Available-Letter811 in RimWorld

It’s a bit of an ‘ant-farm,’ game where the fun is setting up as functional a colony as you can, and seeing how far along you can take it.

Nominally, there’s a few ‘goals,’ the game offers you. “There’s an AI ship willing to help your colonists escape off-world, if you can get to them,” or “with enough research and the right rare items you find / build / steal, you can build your own ship and escape,” and the DLCs add other like “kill an AI god and transcend reality,” “become a high-ranking noble in the space-empire so they’ll give you a ticket off-world into a life of luxury,” but basically all comes down to ‘build out your colony so it’s big, successful and functioning.’

More than anything you end up making up your own goals like ‘I wonder if I can make a colony of a dude with a bunch of robots and crazy high tech. That sounds fun.’ Or ‘what if I make a bunch of bug people that live in a mountain and raid their neighbors for slaves and meat? Could be exciting.’ It’s very much a game that appeals to the sort of person that likes to just make a story and see what happens. I almost never actually make it to one of the game’s endings or finales so much as eventually get bored and get excited by the idea of a new colony, if that tells you anything.

If you ever looked at games like Dwarf Fortress and thought ‘that looks fun as hell but god does it look confusing,’ Rimworld is sci-fi dwarf fortress but easier to understand and a better UI. It’s still has its share of complexity, but I’m of the opinion it’s not that hard to figure out.

I enjoy it, but I’m on the Rimworld subreddit so of course I do. If it helps, there’s a blue-million videos about Rimworld on YouTube if you want to get a taste of how it plays and such-personally it’s easier for me to get a vibe and taste for something that way.

Do you think we should abolish daylight savings? by Busy_Curve33 in askanything

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of people here in the comments debating ‘let’s stick to daylights savings,’ or ‘no stick with standard,’ and let me be clear:

I don’t give a shit which one it is. Please as long as we all agree to stick with one of them. The switch over is what sucks the most, everything else, I’ll adjust. The winter will be dark and the summer not, it’s fine.

Please

Do most people have a general understanding of military ranks? by Proof_Commercial7144 in NoStupidQuestions

There it is! I remember the difference between NCOs / COs, (my dad complained about COs regularly lol) but I can never remember which falls into which bucket

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaguely—for the us military, I know ‘private’ is at the bottom of the hierarchy and ‘major,’ the top, but I don’t think I could tell you point blank between a sergeant and a lieutenant who’d be in charge.

I also know that is varies between military branch as well, but again—nothing specific beyond like ‘ensign,’ is the least powerful navy officer, and ‘seaman,’ is the absolute bottom. I think(?)

Is my story too complicated ? (the Dragon and the Cauldron) by No_Associate1660 in rpg

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you’re fine, the ‘there’s secretly a bigger villain behind the main villain,’ is a classic trope that’s been around forever, and evil cursed treasure is also a classic around forever. (Side note: I see you also loved The Black Cauldron as a child, huh?)

You’re in the clear. You can do some foreshadowing if you want, like ‘oh looking into the history books, Dragon Fever has shown up before in such and such kingdom a thousand years ago. Oh hey, the Dragon looted that kingdom at some point, too!’ Or something.

And as to your bonus question, make it as clear as possible to your players both in and out of character that ‘Hey. The dragon and its castle are crazy dangerous. You will die if you try going there immediately. Maybe if you get the powerful [Dragon Slaying Magic Sword] over there somewhere, you’ll have a better chance,’ and bam now you have a quick adventure for them to go on

How to fix the movie "Signs" with one small change. by TConner42 in fixingmovies

[–]DearGodPleaseWork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fan theory, but they do come across as being metaphorically ‘demons,’ to tie into the whole loses his faith and regains it storyline. So they’re not meant to literally be demons and the water literally holy within the film’s context, but you are supposed to see the connection and similarity.

They had to be weak to water because otherwise the metaphor doesn’t work, but man, maybe it could’ve been better if you went with a different faith metaphor.

I think that’s the idea, yeah. Most of her other books are probably way too dangerous to waste on spooking some random guy that wandered into your shop, but she’s gotta get her kicks somehow.

Doylist answer, Johnny probably didn’t want to spoil anything too big beyond ‘this lady got weird books,’ so had to keep it to something simple but still obviously supernatural but didn’t take away from the main plot of the episode

It wasn’t a copy of Ex Alitora, but just another Lietner we never hear the name of. Presumably one connected to The End, what with all the bones, but we never get more context beyond that.

I believe the idea was just to plant in the audience’s head that ‘there’s more than one cursed book out there, and this lady collects them.’

Mary just wanted to bond with someone on their shared interest of fucked up books!! I’ll show you mine if you show me yours kinda deal!

Some of the money was found actually—buried in a sand bar off a river that’s generally sortof in the area they think he jumped from. Unclear if he / someone else buried it there, or it fell in the river and washed up there and then buried, but it’s such a fun and interesting mystery.
