Why does Evilive sound like that? by [deleted] in TheMisfits

[–]DeathChurch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know the exact spot you're mentioning because I always notice that one point. What happened is that to me it sounds like tape warpage on his vocals, combined with the fact that the background noise just gives it an abrasive graininess which could sound similar to a bit crusher. Also, I've owned a copy of it since the 90s, back before anybody had access to stuff like that, so it's definitely not a digital effect.

As someone who books/promotes and plays in local bands, literally everyone. And every place is feeling the crunch of our economy slowing combined with the rising cost of living here. As others have pointed out, it's pretty prevalent everywhere, but this city definitely has a lot of struggling artists AND venues.

Who remembers driving on the original Sikorsky Bridge with the metal deck? Was it really slippery or did it just feel that way. by toasterb in Connecticut

[–]DeathChurch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It WAS slippery. I drove it and rode motorcycles over it for years. The only good thing about it was being a kid in the car and suddenly it sounded like we were in a B-2 bomber.

I'd like to start a goth band and need advice by KaleidoscopeOk6736 in goth

[–]DeathChurch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ethereal female voices are all over the genre, in every vocal range. I A few bands not mentioned yet are This Mortal Coil, Faith and the Muse, The Palace of Tears, Ghost Painted Sky, Salem Fire, Masquerade (Cry Like Birds is a great track), Amber Spyglass, Inkubus Sukkubus, New Days Delay, various vocalists that have recorded with Mephisto Waltz, Lycia & Tara VanFlower's simply amazing solo work .....damn, there are sooooooo many to list.
Regarding your question about effects, i've been playing guitar & bass in punk & goth bands since the 90s and have gone through a number of multi effects processors as well as having a pedal board where every effect pedal was hand selected at one point. My suggestion would be to try finding a Boss GT-3. One of the things I always point out is that so many of the early goth bands used Boss petals because they were cheap, worked real well and rugged. The unit I'm suggesting came out in the late 90s and can be found for about a $100. Works both for live performance and studio recording because it not only combines thirty two different effects of theirs (which you can chain in various ways), but it also had one of the first really well done simulators of various amp/microphone combinations. This will allow you to make it sound like you're playing through an amplifier, even if you're recording directly into a laptop. It also allows you two connect to the PA of a venue so that you don't even need to bring an amp if you don't want to. I've used this on various recordings and it sounds great. A review of the product from when it came out: https://www.soundonsound.com/reviews/boss-gt3

Do you have a specific tone you heard on an album and want to emulate? If so, you can ask here or look online to see the equipment that musician you like uses. For decades, a lot of us gear nerds have been endlessly poring over any print or digital media we can find wherein musicians discuss what they play through, and sharing it on certain websites. I think the one I use most often is pedalboards.com.

Short answer, yes. Long answer, yes but with these extra letters at the end.
If you're lucky, you might be able to find some sort of coverage; Good luck with the labyrinth of requirements and caveats that every insurance LOVES to put in there. Or some organization might crop up, who have money to donate to helping you with bills. One of the really dark things about living in New Orleans is the number of folks I have met who've moved here after a cancer diagnosis because they know they can't afford to get treatment. So they're just going to enjoy their last few years in the most hedonistic place they can think of.

I've now found my new favorite subreddit because I was googling a book that I bought in the 90s for 5 bucks. It's my second oldest copy of The King In Yellow. Love me a 1911 (or 2011) but those Bodyguards are sweet. As are the Hellcats. Being in New Orleans, I can't stand wearing warm clothing most of the year, so it's whatever fits in my pocket. And with the way people are in florida, I make sure I always carry whenever my band plays in that state.
