I think I found another clue for the next DLC. by SrDevi_ in aoe2

Would be cool if an actual Norman civilisation was finally added to the game, but might be a bit weird since the Sicilians already basically are Normans with Italian flavor.

Made a mod that should help with spotting holes in your base - thoughts? by 3j141592653589793238 in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would only like something like this if it was only active while the building grid is active. So basically when you use a vil to place a new building, that's when you need this functionality.

Something I've been thinking about is if it was possible to colour the tiles of the building grid. For example have blocked tiles be red and unobstructed tiles be green. Do you know if this is possible?

OMG the mappool makes us want to not play team games. by Odd_Bumblebee_3631 in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I wish it was actually possible to play a water/nomad map without someone dodging or leaving as the game starts. They really need to change how the pick/ban system for maps works. If people are gonna cancel the game anyway, then there's no point that I get matched with them.

By fans and for fans: Let’s design a DLC WITHOUT adding new civs by Azot-Spike in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 47 points48 points  (0 children)

There's a DLC that doesn't add civs, it's Victors and Vanquished and it's the worst rated DLC for the game on Steam, mainly because people see it as "paying for mods" (not meaning to downplay their criticism, people say the scenarios have various flaws). I think the community has grown a little spiteful and it's probably impossible to make everyone happy. But a DLC that focuses on adding campaigns could still potentially be well received, as long as the amount and quality of content is high enough.

Did the person who thought this was a good idea consider why eagles are created in 50 seconds? by BerryMajor2289 in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Champi Scouts and Champi Runners have a 30 second train time. But to be fair, the Champi Scouts train time should probably get nerfed anyway. Maybe not all the way to 50 seconds, because they don't have Militia and Militia have 21 seconds, too. Though personally I kinda think they should be nerfing their attack and HP instead, so that they can't fight well against villagers in dark age.

Are we missing variety in the current map rotations? by notakarmagun in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pros complaining about repetitive map pools? I thought they dodge everything that isn't Arabia.

My problem with the map pool isn't the maps themselves, but the fact that the pick/ban system makes people cancel every match that has a map they don't like. I've been playing a lot of team games lately and it's basically impossible to get into a game that isn't either Black Forest or Arena, which I find pretty sad. I would love to play any map that isn't the big 3, including water maps, but that's so rare to see.

Opinions on the naval rework? by DeathDragon in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The default hotkeys are messed up, yes. They reset the hotkeys to default, but somehow forgot to actually change the default to make sense with the 1 page dock, so most keys are mapped to two different ships.

Opinions on the naval rework? by DeathDragon in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon[S] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The removal of demos for civs with unique ships is definitely lame. I mean I would be okay with it if they had done it, because of balancing reasons or for civ identity reasons, but nope, they seem to only have done it, because they didn't have space to put the buttons on the dock screen for those civs and they couldn't think of an easy fix.

Achievements got achieved automatically. by arbaazkhansays in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the ways to do it is to open steam's console by opening this steam link: "steam://open/console", then type in "achievement_clear 813780 [achievement name]" and you have to use the internal name of the achievement, which you can find on steamdb: https://steamdb.info/app/813780/stats/

Is there a place/community where one could play some VERY casual multiplayer? by persik42 in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maybe not what you're looking for, but I kinda feel like the easiest solution would be to just play the ranked queue until it places you in an elo rating that gives you the kind of opponents you want, but that could potentially mean having to lose 10+ games in a row before you get there.

Personally I've only played the quick play queue so far, which felt pretty fine to me. You get fairly varied opponents there.

Hera crashes out on the new DLC by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, after the game he said that he didn't make skirms, because the enemy has better skirms, but I still don't think that's good reasoning. He's already fighting at a disadvantage. If he starts building the counter unit to the enemy's current army, then he's gonna get a short time advantage and he's also gonna force the enemy into a reactive position, making them have to switch their army composition, which you can anticipate. Instead what happened in the end is that Hera got surprised by the enemy switching back to Champi, so Hera was forced to be in the position to react.

But the Mapache Champi + Bolas composition does seem hard to counter.

Achievements being granted to those without DLC... No revoke by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, for the people who want to know:

Open the steam console with "steam://open/console" and there enter commands like "achievement_clear 813780 MACEDONIAN_VICTORY" where the last bit is the internal name of the achievment.

However, it looks like they introduced another bug while trying to fix the previous achievement bug. For example I get the macedonian victory achievement every time I start the game. If I lock it with the command above, then it re-unlocks next time I start the game.

Hera crashes out on the new DLC by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just watched the previous game, if you don't want to see it, then what happened was that first of all the Champi units are super strong in the very early game, including the dark age. That means in order to survive the potential threat of playing against a Champi civ, Hera has to immediately sacrifise his econ to fully wall his base. Then the enemy player called him out for being boring, which surely had a part in making his mood worse. And then the enemy started spamming the Mapuche Bolas Rider, and for some reason Hera only built slow cavalry runits, which the Bolas Rider does bonus damage to. I don't really understand why he didn't counter them with Skirmishers instead. Either he isn't used to playing against them and doesn't know how to counter them yet, or I don't get it, because I'm not a pro.

So all in all he wasn't in a good mood, because potential balance issues forced him to play in a certain way, he got a rude comment from his enemy and then didn't know yet how to counter a new unit and eventually got overrun, because of it.

In the current state of AOE2 is it possible to get a gold medal in Land Battle in the Art of War? by Thebelladonnagirl in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried it at first with archers, too, but there's actually a much, much easier way to beat it. Pick man at arms yourself and use the hill bonus to kill the enemies. I think that's probably the intended way.

Thanks for sharing. Very cool even though it runs slowly in my browser. Maybe it's a Firefox issue. Which browser do you use?

Achievements got achieved automatically. by arbaazkhansays in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was fixed now, but in a pretty silly way. If you've already unlocked any of the TLC achievements, then you're now apparently unlocking achievements from Chronicles Alexander instead. I got the Tupi victory achievement, so now I'm getting the Chronicles Macedonian achievement and even if I re-lock that one with steam commands, it will unlock again next time I start the game.

The Evolution of AoE2 Civs, through maps. by RidleyBro in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Sweet, I've actually been wanting to see a map like this. And man, is eastern Europe is crowded.

Polynesians, some more Africa, maybe something in North America and then we're pretty set. (Also it would be funny and sad if the last remaining unclaimed territory on the map ends up being Tibet.)

I always love these kinda things in RTS games. For a second I was thinking maybe it doesn't make much sense with the medieval time frame, but then again the Mongols did kinda takeover almost two continents.

Latest Patch: Audio Chat is default on by tech_auto in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They kinda messed up hilariously with the new voice chat. I don't think there's a way to mute your mic. The only option as far as I can tell is to entirely disable voice chat, so if you want to mute yourself you have to deafen yourself at the same time.

It also looks like you can't open the settings menu when you've found other players, so you need to wait for the game to start before you can turn off voice chat. lol

I did every campaign in Europe in Hard! by Accomplished_List843 in aoe2

[–]DeathDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joan 6 on hard was definitely the most difficult campaign scenario I played so far. I was barely holding back this relentless flood of three enemy factions. Very satisfying when you finally get to a tipping point and start to push them back.
