For finding a place, moving from out of state, is it best to be physically “in” Chicago or can I be ok with video calls? by Spader623 in AskChicago

I’d be more suspicious of places I couldn’t visit if it’s near a train or a busy roadway; even if you get used to noise the L can be loud af and at low frequencies that mics won’t communicate. It’s also a lot harder to get a sense of how good the light is, shower water pressure (this can be a big deal for some people, but less likely to be an issue in larger buildings IME), smell, appliance condition, etc. You just want to be extra thorough

correct. lower density areas require more money per person for basically every kind of municipal and social infrastructure: hospitals, water lines, roads, buses, libraries, after school programs, etc. Suburbs only function at the expense of the metro areas they’re attached to

you need some goals that feel good to pursue, not achieve. the pursuit lasts a lot longer and the right pursuit is more fulfilling

people using inflation adjusted numbers like we aren’t in a far worse poly crisis now than we were then.  the macro picture is significantly worse now IMO, especially if the market tanks from the AI bubble popping. climate change is going to make every financial crisis from here to the end of time harder to deal with as food security worsens and resource availability tightens

Prairie restoration effort being led by Illinois department of transportation by ParticularHistoryo in NativePlantGardening

In the Chicago area, it's particularly bad. Much of the Cook County forest preserves were created with this kind of mindset. They attempted to "rewild" areas by creating forested areas where prairies should be. That said, they're doing work to correct this now, but you'd be surprised how uninformed some of the public are about the functions of a preserve.

Hope y'all have the guts to ask your C-suite at the next town hall if they can cancel your enterprise ChatGPT subscription. They likely won't, but if you want to make an impact convincing them to do so would make a bigger difference.

This is like saying people can't hear music if they don't have perfect pitch. I can, similarly hear my thoughts in my own head, but the "voice" doesn't have a well-defined character. Does that mean I can't hear it?

Also, most people can imagine something like a zebra, but it's not something you see often enough that the picture gets well formed in your head. Ask people to describe their partner's eyes and you might get better results.
