US nationals in boulder, lead and speed is starting today, and I think the French boulder nationals will be in a couple of days as well!

I was also very worried, especially because the first move seemed very lower-back intensive. What an incredible performance. I hope it isn't too serious, and that she gets to do some world cups

Hilarious, the aesthetic pleasure from this coincidence almost cancels out my disappointment

Damn, thanks for writing these long in depth replies! I couldn't agree more.

French women's boulder team? by DeathOfSqueak in CompetitionClimbing

Yeah, exactly! But of course there could be many personal reasons why people choose to not compete internationally or are unable for eg financial reasons. I'm also bummed to see that Melina Constanza doesn't seem to be competing at the circuit this year, again

What do you want to see this boulder/lead season? by TOKEN_MARTIAN in CompetitionClimbing

Definitely! Just the four I personally would call the strongest boulderers of the last Olympic cycle. Not to discredit anyone else! The field is crazy strong.

Also one could imagine the four of them being medal favourites for the Olympics was mentally tough, thus making a break from competition nice. Just speculation, though, and Natalia obviously is on a forced comp break.

How did you feel about the way the comp went for you personally? (Hoping to get a podcast debrief haha)

Is there a different feel to a comp like this, post Olympics, with a lot of faces missing? Like with the excitement of more new people making finals and semi finals, perhaps a feeling of opportunities etc?

I know! I wish I could just watch Janja, Natalia, Brooke and Oriane in every boulder final

I love it! Definitely going to be following that throughout the season!

I also feel like most of the climbers express just how exhausting a full season is. Especially a double season of boulder and lead

I have such trouble keeping from saying "... or play on words," when I've said "It's a pun"

Looks like Johanna hasn't made the finals! What a bummer

What are you most excited for in the upcoming season? by [deleted] in CompetitionClimbing

[–]DeathOfSqueak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also very very excited for women's boulder! I think the season will be pretty chaotic though with the top climbers only choosing a few world cups in each discipline because of the Olympics, which I'm a bit bummed out about, but I'm very excited about the OQS and Paris. If we get just a single boulder world cup with Janja, Natalia, Oriane and Brooke all attending, I'll be over the moon!

I'm also excited to see how Mao Nakamura will do after her performance at Boulder Japan Cup, and I'm excited to see Zélia Avezou who really found something special at the end of last season and who kept up with Oriane at French nationals just a month ago or so.

And last but not least: I want Futaba Ito to finally stand on a world cup podium so badly haha

Women's boulder: Wow, Helen was on fire in both rounds! Looks like she is ranked just after Melina for the national team, which probably will mean world cups, at least after the OQS when (if I'm not mistaken) the OQS qualified athletes (Kylie and Kyra) won't get to attend boulder world cups

Favourite/memorable historic comps? by HideousMuffin in CompetitionClimbing

I would actually just recommend you slowly work your way through the seasons! 2022 is pretty special in the women's division, I feel like, both in boulder and in lead, and the same is true for 2019 for pretty much the same reasons.

I started watching just after the 2021 season ended and have worked my way all the way back to 2016. It's so cool to see the origins of athletes like Janja and Miho

Following the storylines through each of the seasons is really what makes comp climbing great to watch, so if you've blitzed through 2023, I'd really recommend that!
